Good research Mike, thanks! That's definitely on the to-do list for this winter. I've ordered from Aircraft Spruce in the past and have been very pleased with their products and service. Bruce

Stock Birkin wheel, not sure what brand it is, but I think it's 300mm and uses the Momo bolt pattern and horn button. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/180647737_IMG_9357.JPG Bruce

Wow, talk about a NICE Christmas present!! Congratulations and enjoy the build! :hurray: Bruce

Wow, very nicely done! I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to restore something of that magnitude. I like the wooden "steering" wheels and the interior trim in the passenger compartment and restroom, but check out the cycle wings on the front landing gear...wonder how they'd look on a se7en!! But for $2.7 mil I'd be looking for something a little sportier, like a P51, Spitfire, etc. Bruce

Congratulations, as a firefighter I'm sure you've earned it!!! Hope you have a long, healthy retirement so you can enjoy doing all the fun things you want to do. Picking up an S2K in a few weeks is a GREAT start!!! :hurray: Bruce

Hi SW25, Check out the Burton Power website for a description of the various small Ford motors and a tuning guide for each. They also carry just about every part needed for the Kent, Zetec, etc, motors and I believe they even have a FI set-up for the Kent motor. The only downside is they're in England and the shipping and exchange rate could kill your wallet!! http://www.burtonpower.com/default.aspx You can also check out Cherik's website. He has a nice Kent vs Zetec comparison, as well as a nice write-up on his conversion to the Zetec motor in his Caterham if you decide to go that route in the future. http://my.voyager.net/~quadrant19/index.html Hope this helps, Bruce

Hi Tom, I have a friend who's passionate about 911's and has owned a 2005 997 Carrera S, a couple 964's, a Euro market 930, a Carrera, and a couple of SC's. I ended up getting involved with 911's because of him, and just recently bought a 1989 Carrera (non-964) that needs a clutch and top-end work. I've driven his 997 at a PCA DE at Watkins Glen and it was an awesome drive...very fast, handled great, easy to drive, and very smooth and comfortable. I've also done some long distance drives in them, and they can cover a lot of distance, very quickly, and very comfortably. The 996 models are very much like the 997's but most people prefer the look of the 997. Most of the die-hard 911 addicts like the air-cooled cars for the reasons John stated above. The 993's are the last of the air-cooled cars and are absolutely beautiful!! My buddy ended up selling his 997 because he liked the raw feel of the earlier models, and picked up a 78 SC for PCA G-stock racing and a Euro 930 Turbo hot rod. Most people recommend getting a pre-purchase inspection before buying any 911, but with only 4400 miles on it, the one you're looking at should be like new. I think I remember something about the water-cooled cars having problems with RMS (rear main seal) leaks, so check into that too. If you have any questions or want to do some research, check out: http://forums.rennlist.com/menu/content.htm or http://www.pelicanparts.com/index.htm. The amount of readily available parts and expertise is unbelievable in the 911 world.....at a price of course!!! Bruce

"I know Geoffrey Ring at Racetek Engineering in New York." Thanks for that info JBH. At some point, I want someone that really knows what they're doing fine tune my Emerald ECU and he looks to be about 2 hours from my house. I'm also a relatively new 911 owner, and it'd be fun to check out his place. I still need to get in touch with Tim at Marren Fuel Injection (about 25 mins from my house) to see what he can offer for fine-tuning my setup. Bruce

Hi Daniel, Here are some of the specs I had measured previously for the Performance trailer: Overall Length: 213" Bed Length: 168" (Beavertail is 24" long) Overall Width: 94" Bed Width: 72" ( not 78" ) Ramp L x W: 69" x 16" Weight: Sorry, I still don't know yet... GVWR: #3500 I just went outside and took an unofficial weight by taking a bathroom scale and two blocks of wood and alternating between the two main wheels and the tongue wheel. Not sure how accurate it's going to be but I came up with 167# for the tongue and 325-330 for the main wheels for a total of #822. That's a little more than I thought it would be, but it is 14' long instead of the 12' trailers that some people are using. That leaves a towing capacity of appr #2678 if I'm calculating it properly. I would have no problem towing my '64 MGB, and could probably tow my '89 911 short distances once it goes on a weight loss program! I've been very happy with my trailer so far. It's easy to maneuver by hand on a relatively flat paved driveway, and I've been towing it with my minivan without problem until I can get a more dedicated tow vehicle. Hope this helps, Bruce PS: I have the aluminum deck on my trailer.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear in my posts that this was a BDA replica cover that goes over a modified Zetec cover. Paul didn't know the exact weight off-hand, but I did weigh my aluminum ZX1 cover on a shipping scale and came up with a little less than 4.5#. I wouldn't be surprised if the BDA cover would be an addional 3-5# depending on the casting thickness. Certainly a complete new BDA style cover that replaces the Zetec cover would be the ultimate, but would there be enough of a market to make it worth while? Here is the latest from Paul where he addresses how it's secured, the possible filler neck clearance to the hood, and ZX2 solenoid issue: "Not sure, I will get back to you about the weight. The 4 inner bolts are secured first then the cover placed on and the outer ones tightened. The zetec cover seals perfectly. Most of the covers have gone into Ford Escorts with zetecs so unsure of the clearance. I run a dry sumped cover with no filler. The engine rarely uses any oil. If it does need filling I do it with a syringe through the dip stick tube. You maybe able to mill a pocket in the underside to clear the cam solenoid. Its quite thick in that area. If you send a more detailed photo and some dimensions I can check Regards Paul" Let me know if there is any interest and I'll relay that info to Paul. Thanks, Bruce PS: I like my powder-coated cover and am probably going to stick with what I have for now. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1432418688_IMG_0866.JPG

I feel for you guys, but up here in New England it's good to be a sports fan these days. The Giants have won 6 in a row, the Pats are on an unbelievable 8-0 roll going into the big game with Indy, and this long suffering Red Sox fan can celebrate their 2nd World Series title in 4 years!!! Then you have BC near the top of the charts in college football, the Celtics looking to be competitive for the first time in a while....heck, even the UConn football team is ranked in the top 25!!! So, I heard back from Paul on the cam cover. Here is his reply: "Thanks for your enquiry. I have sold the last batch I had cast and looking to have some more made. Not sure what the ZX1 cover looks like but over here we have an early cast aluminium type and the later moulded plastic type. My cover fits both but the plastic type is easier to modify to fit. Its a hobby that's got quite allot of interest. I usually get 10 cast at a time and they sell quite quickly. What quantity are you looking for? I am off on holiday this Friday but could arrange to have a batch cast before I leave and have them machined on my return. They are not cheap because of the low volumes and work involved the last batch I sold at £180 each or around $360 plus delivery. It all depends on the casting cost but yes I'm interested in a special price for quantity." So, I'm pretty sure that it'd work on the ZX1 (95-97 with aluminum covers like Gert's) and ZX3 (01-on with plastic covers) motors. Since the ZX2 has the solenoid in the front center of the cover, that would probably not work. Now, I've heard of some people deactivating the solenoid since it was more of an emissions requirement so I'm not sure if you could remove the wiring and hardware on the ZX2 and make it work? Someone with more ZX2 experience can chime in if they have any ideas??? One other thing. Moving the oil filler to the front of the engine would reduce the clearance to the hood (bonnet). I'm not sure if it would fit without modification, or if the neck would have to have some material removed at the top to give enough clearance. It might look more appropriate with the neck shortened and a simple aftermarket aluminum cap fitted in place of the plastic stock one. Let me know what you guys think... Bruce

Gert - Looks nice, I like the ZX1 cover also! Steve and anybody else with the ZX2 motor. Do you still have the actuator (?) at the front center of the cam cover? I'm just wondering if that would work with the BDA cover...I don't think they have that feature on the UK engines. Take a look on this picture of Folis' engine (hope he doesn't mind me using it): http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/818199314_FOLIS ENGINE.JPG Bruce

I e-mailed the seller about the cam cover and am waiting his reply. Will keep you updated.... Just in case this will only work on the ZX1 cam cover, does anybody know if the ZX1 cam cover will fit on the later engines? "The seller is in the U.K. FYI. I'd think an enterprising youth on this side of the pond with access to a CNC machine could do some nice covers for both Zetec and Duratec? " - A little competition is always good, anybody interested??? Bruce

Hi Mike, Not sure if you have to modify the Zetec cap or use an aftermarket one, but that part should be "relatively" easy. There are some significant mods that would have to be done to the original cover. Check out the link above or a partial excerpt here: "To enable the filling of oil on the wet sump cam cover there are two options available. Option 1 Fig. 5 shows an un-modified cover with the oil filler at the rear of the cam cover. The filler on the BDA is at the front of the cam cover so the neck has to be moved. Fig. 6 shows the filler has be carefully removed with a hacksaw blade or mini hacksaw, with a blanking plate welded over the hole to provide oil tight sealing. The filler is then repositioned at the correct end of the cover and welded in place. The filler neck protrudes through the BDA cover allowing fitment of the filler cap Option 2 The other option is a BDA cover that is available with a machined hole at rear of the cover that allows the original zetec filler neck to protrude through. This is available to the person that wants to modify the cover themselves but has no welding facility. Picture available shortly" The one without the cap is the one for dry sump applications. Bruce

Sure Al, I'll try to contact him from home tonight. Quite frankly, I hadn't planned on swapping out my $30 eBay red powder-coated cam cover because it matched my Jenvey TB's perfectly! It would be nice to have a spare to swap out for a more classic look though! Not sure if it fits the ZX2 and ZX3 cam covers, but I'll ask that question too. Here's the modification instructions: http://members.aol.com/hicksdavidr/zeteccovermods.html If it is still available, how many people might be interested? Bruce

Didn't want to take the SW7's Festival O/T, but I had to agree with SteveT about this: "I think I'm in love with that Cosworth motor. Do not tell the wife" I've always loved the look of the Cosworth BDA motor and remembered seeing a cam cover that looked like a BDA but fit on the Zetec. So I googled it and came up with this: http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1775560467_bda1.jpeg http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1039528101_zetec1.jpeg Not sure if it's still available, how much, or what's involved to fit it, but the contact info is here: http://members.aol.com/hicksdavidr/bdacover.html Should be a LOT cheaper than a genuine BDA motor!! Which ECU does the Caterham-Supplied Zetec Supersport come with?
11Budlite replied to ce1984's topic in General Tech
Unless I've heard incorrectly, it's the T2 model that they use. That model also seems to be popular with the Focus crowd. I'm sure someone with a Supersport can confirm. Bruce -
Welcome aboard Obi Wan! That's a beautiful car that I used to enjoy on Rich M's website. Glad to see it's in good hands!! Tom - Check out this website for the original build, some videos, and the rebuild after the accident at Spa: http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/ Bruce
