Mike - no speedometer, so you inspired me to do some calculations. Took a fast and dirty tire circumference measurement, and with the 3.7 rear end 6500 rpm = 118 and 7000 rpm = 127. I was somewhere between those at end of the main straight. And I have no idea what my lap times were. The Caterham seems softer and more forgiving. In some ways easier to drive. It seems like the harder I drive the Mallock, the happier it is. The weekend after the track day I went for a drive in the Seven, and it felt civilized and relaxed. I'm running treaded vintage Dunlops with the tread pattern from the late '60s, so I'm sure it would be considerable quicker with some current slicks. But they are fun to drive with.

...but thought I'd share a few photos of the Mallock. These are from a trackday with 10/10ths at Putnam Park back at the end of October. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=11977&stc=1http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=11978&stc=1http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=11979&stc=1

Link didn't work for me, but the announcement can be found on the Goodwood home page. Rear fenders appear to be narrower, and the caravan tail lights are gone! Steve

LOG 36 Princeton, NJ - Offical Thread
bball7754 replied to Certified Lotus's topic in National Events
The last LOG I attended was at Barber, and it was a great experience. I made two mistakes. At the LOG at Indy we drove a lap of the speedway, and it was a bit of a ho-hum experience. Slow cruise at 30 mph. As a result,I skipped Talladega only to find out from those who attended that it was a pretty wide open experience. I heard of folks touching 100 mph - although no proof was offered. I also skipped the track day as the organizer was making a big deal out of having everyone go with a instructor until they gave you a sign off. Also a big mistake. The dates are penciled in my calendar. Steve -
Thanks, that's what I thought but have been in denial. Called an engine machine shop today and asked if they could mill it flat and remove the corrosion. Said it was too small to do that. I think they just weren't interested in such a small job. Guess I'll try some other shops.

This isn't for my Seven, but it is for a Crossflow - on my Mallock. I've had a small coolant leak somewhere around the thermostat housing. Since that portion of the engine is exposed, the coolant gets pushed around everywhere. I pulled the housing off (it also has a swirl pot attached) and there was quite a bit of corrosion and what seemed like poor gasket and sealant. Do you think a new gasket and sealant will seal correctly?

Isn't Geoff a member here? Hopefully he'll be along to add some background to the making of the video. Steve

I saw Anthony and his Seven in a parking garage in Birmingham during LOG, and can confirm both that it's street legal (he drove it there), and that it's a head turner in person. Steve

Fitting 4-1 Comp Header in 1991 Caterham with Crossfow
bball7754 replied to O Racer's topic in General Tech
John - Hope these photos help. The pipe from cylinder 1 intersects the body 6" back from the bolt in the engine mount which attaches to the frame. Other answers. It came with the 4-1 exhaust, so don't have anything to compare it to. It's a 1998 with the diagonal cross member. Can definitely fit the pipes without removing the steering column. My rebuild is a bit milder than yours. 40mm webers, large valves, port work, roller rockers, 83.5 pistons, 10:1 CR, SCAT crank, wet sump, standard rods, Kent 244 cam. Dynos really vary, but think it made around 158 hp (adjusted) at the crank at about 7200 RPM. Can't find my dyno sheets right now, so working from memory. Engine builder was surprised, to be honest. Seating Safety 'Protecting the Bumb's Bum'
bball7754 replied to xcarguy's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Shane - I think a bare seat (Kirkey, Sparco, whatever) with an SFI foam insert would be a good way to go. This company builds them, and you can see some examples on their photo page. http://www.speedseatfactory.com/Full_Circle_Formula/Speed_Seat_Photos.html My Mallock had nothing but a bare seat bottom on the floorpan, and used the rear bulkhead as the seat upright. I purchased an SFI foam kit, and created a custom seat. Steve -
I replaced my Caterham belts with Schroth belts, and have been extremely happy with them. HMS Motorsport will make a set pretty much to your specifications. My lap belts are "pull up", and the latch is on the inside lap belt for each set. Also, your Caterham likely has attachment points behind the seats for the crotch/sub straps. Steve

Tom - I have the same problem. No issue when driving on the street, but over pressurizes when I drive on track. Also no exhaust in the coolant, although I've only tested once. I think that's about the extent of the similarities between my Crossflow and your Duratec.
-
Tom - too early to start polishing. I'd read about your cooling issue on Blatchat, and thought it was resolved? I'm still over-pressurizing my cooling system at the track. Have a new head gasket, and am targeting changing it next weekend. Steve

So, the last 3 years I've stayed at the Fairfield, and it seemed like most stayed at the track. This year, I reserved a room at the track, and everyone seems to be staying at the Fairfield. Is it something I said? Steve
-
My memory of feedback on Blatchat is that they aren't great about returning emails. I'd give them a call. I have an early model of their half-hood, which doesn't have the small window in the center. Believe they added specifically for owners that had added a rollbar mounted third brake light. If your regular hood goes on with your mirror, the half-hood will. Steve

Seven S-2 thrown rod through block
bball7754 replied to newtoit's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I would think you could find a replacement block, although I'm not sure how different the early pre-Crossflow blocks are from the later blocks. It may even be possible to use an early Crossflow block. Here's a Crossflow with a patched block: http://www.thekentlives.com/index.php/tech/engine/enginerebuilds#patch Steve -
Mike - Thanks, and the Caterham it is, then.

Would I be violating the spirit of this event if I brought the Mallock? http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?9691 I think I'd still be the only one with Crossflow power. Steve
