LAP RECORD ATTEMPT! Caterham Seven 420 R vs Cayman GT4 Fast Lap

Calling all Zetec owners. How happy are you with the motor? What are your plans for it? What do you put down for power if you have ever dyno'd it. It's a stout motor but not the most powerful one with a power ceiling, especially compared to the Duratec. We all strive for a little more power and there are multiple avenues to get to it. ITB's, raceline build, turbo, supercharged (seems to be SV only option), cams, SVT or even swapping for Duratec. I bring this up because I'm at the crossroads above. My Zetec doesn't seem to be too healthy putting out 130whp on ITB's and other work even after tuning and replacing everything I could think of. It was a double digit dyno health condition before being tuned. I think if I had to start all over I'd simply get myself a raceline build like others have done but I'm somewhat committed to other options at this point and will try to shoe horn a Rotrex SC into the chassis one of these summers and see how that goes. Very open to discussion on the matter and opinions. 200whp seems like an impossible goal without FI or Raceline on these motors.

Good Caterham mechanic in Virginia or mid atlantic?
Vovchandr replied to Saudio's topic in General Sevens Discussion
As of 5 years ago in my communication with him, Chip has said that he's "pretty much retired". The business might still be around under new command however, I can't be certain of that. -
Going back to the original question, the market for a new 7 manufacturer is going to be very very small with small margins. I'd wager that even if you could design a superior Caterham type replica for cheaper and have it stateside you would be bemused at the fact that it's not selling and people are buying new Caterhams instead for more money. The value is in history, support, stories and the aura around and behind an established old brand and they still struggle to sell maybe 50 units state side a year due to regulations, difficulties registering and niche ambiguity of the vehicle itself. As others have said for most who simply want an open experience a Slingshot or even a Morgan are more obvious and easier answers for people to get themselves into. For people who want performance things like Atom are still a very popular version. It's essentially the next evolution of a modern Seven type car in different engine layout configuration. Didn't Trex's had a steering wheel to begin with? Man those were the coolest thing in early 2000's.

The Regular Summary of Classified Ads of Se7ens Found For Sale
Vovchandr replied to Croc's topic in Cars For Sale
I was semi offering. I recently browsed Chris Harris's new auction website and saw some interesting units. Wanted to share but didn't have an appropriate area to do that in and didn't want to start a dedicated thread. This was an interesting unit I thought (less than 25 years old) https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2005-caterham-csr-260 Other old listings https://collectingcars.com/?query=caterham&page=1&refinementList[stage][0]=sold -

Is there any value for adding UK 25 year old 7s listing? Pound conversion is favorable and maybe some will be inclined to go the import route -

That's like a hillbilly version of James May's Caterham used in Madagascar special With that said, a rear engine 7 I'm sure is very... interesting to drive. -

This will be a considerable mountain to climb but it's doable if you really desire the ITBs. If you simply desire HP there are better ways of getting to that end. If HP is the goal, my recommendation is take the car to your local dyno place and get a base line reading. It may surprise you and your local tuner might be able to get some more HP out of it while there. My car with ITB's and regular Zetec has been a considerable PITA for dealing with and sorting out the issues. After years of tinkering, dozens of hours and thousands of dollars later of troubleshooting my ITB Zetec is outputting about 130whp on a worked engine.. With that said, they sound great and look cool so theres that...

Can't help you with a stock one. I only have a modified one with ITBs that makes 130whp I finally ordered the proper venturies. Maybe I'll get a few more hp after them - Vlad

The man, the myth, the legend! Do you take 135hp cores?

Bump. Even if it sold I'd love to follow the story of the rebuild

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kbrauer/2023/01/30/doug-demuro-from-car-videos-to-car-auctions-to-car-empires/amp/ Doug DeMuro: From Car Videos To Car Auctions To Car Empires Doug DeMuro is arguably the most successful automotive YouTuber in the relatively short history of that young medium. He’s got over 4.5 million subscribers, and his 20-30 minute car reviews regularly earn more than a million views, often within a week or two of being posted. He’s already become a central figure in America’s automotive culture, having shared screen time with Jay Leno while being a recurring guest on mainstream car blogs and becoming involved in the annual Pebble Beach Concours. And now, with a $37 million investment from The Chernin Group (TCG) in his recently-launched Cars & Bids auction site, Doug can add “entrepreneur” to his list of accolades. Doug’s YouTube channel started in 2013, based on feedback from a Jalopnik reader, where Doug was freelance writing at the time. Doug started his channel as a sort of personal ownership vlog of special-interest cars he purchased, the first being a Ferrari 360. “That’s the most pedestrian exotic car you can imagine, but back then nobody on YouTube had a Ferrari. That was kind of interesting to people. What is it actually like to own a Ferrari?” Doug did the same thing with an Aston Martin, a Hummer, and a Viper. That format lasted about 3 years, but Doug realized his viewers were more interested in getting his perspective on many cars, versus in-depth analysis on only a few, so he pivoted to reviewing special-interest cars and modern vehicles, often with the help of owners or local dealerships lending him the vehicles. His “quirks-and-features” themed reviews have become a vital research component for an increasing number of new- and used-car shoppers because of Doug’s approachable, relatable style that never feels intimidating or condescending to the mainstream car buyer. Doug’s YouTube activity remains a key component of his daily workload, but it now has to share time with his management of Cars & Bids, the auction site he launched in June of 2020. Cars & Bids has since sold over $230 million worth of special-interest cars. The site focuses primarily on sub-$100,000 collectible vehicles from between 1980 and 2010, though it also features a lot of new electric vehicles, including Rivian trucks and SUVs, and the Ford F-150 Lightning. One-to-three-year-old special interest models, like the Ford Bronco and $100,000-plus exotic cars, are also increasingly appearing in Cars & Bids online auctions Why did Doug start Cars & Bids? “About three and a half years ago it hit me that I wanted to do something with my audience that was less beholden to the YouTube algorithm,” said Doug. “You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow or the next day, but I have a big audience and I really needed to create a business where I control the revenue streams, as opposed to YouTube being able to turn them on or off at any given time.” Doug partnered with Blake Machado to launch Cars & Bids, and he admits it was extremely stressful for him to start his own business. “I’ve told a lot of people I’m never starting another business again. That was tough,” said Doug. “First, the anxiety before we launched, especially in the middle of a global pandemic, but also the question of is it going to work, and are people going to show up? I’m not sleeping any of those nights. And even after the launch you’re anxious. It’s just an enormous amount of stress and fear.” Of course the site did work, growing so rapidly that Doug’s stress immediately switched from “will people show up?” to having to hire a team of people to manage the flood of activity it generated starting day one. Doug tells us, “The first day we received 900 submissions, and the guy who was reviewing all of them was just me, and I still have to shoot videos!” He immediately had to hire writers and auction support people. And the next 2 years were a race, trying to keep up with the growth. “That’s the nature of a startup. A hole appears and you hire people to plug it, then another hole appears and you hire more people.” That rapid growth, jumping from two auctions a day to four auctions a day to 10 auctions a day, led to interest from venture capitalists and private equity firms. “The thing that was appealing about The Chernin Group is they work specifically with these creator-owned and creator-led businesses, like MeatEater and Barstool Sports,” says Doug. “We’ve heard from all these potential investors, but here’s one that gets it. That understands the limitations and the benefits a creator brings. That understands that paid marketing maybe isn’t the way to achieve growth. Maybe it’s going after people who are naturally there because they love the creator. Here’s a group of people I don’t have to explain this to.” Doug felt it was time to bring someone on board that really knows how to take a business to the next level. “We’ve hired a CEO who has been a CEO before. We got an investment from a business who has invested in similar businesses before. I still own a good chunk of the business and I’m still going to be day-to-day involved,” Doug assured us. Steve Cousineau, Principal at TCG, told us, “At TCG, we get excited about businesses built for highly engaged, passionate communities — the modern enthusiast car sector is a perfect example. Doug has done a tremendous job of connecting with that community through his unique brand of content, and building a commerce platform tailor fit to serve them. We believe Cars & Bids has only just scratched the surface of this sector.” Ro Choy will be the CEO of Cars & Bids, with previous experience as the CEO of BitTorrent and the CBO of Luxe. Ro began his career at eBay Motors, and plans to focus on accelerating growth of the marketplace through increased investment in content, technology, and business operations.

I should add. The rebuild is marketed as a few hundred dollar service on their website and that was the expectation on which I sent everything in as it all worked at the time of taking off. I figured it could use a tuneup as I was troubleshooting issues such as backfire. Once they got it, they didn't think things were upto snuff and parts added up quick.

They replaced pretty much every component and I had to order new century stacks after which aren't part of regular quote on ITBs I don't believe. I did exaggerate, I double checked and I'm closer to $1500 for them. I'm now double interested in your progress as I own an omex 600 ecu that came with the Rotrex supercharger which is my solution to potential 200hp. We won't talk about it's price... If there is a relatively easy wiring solution to swap to Omex I'm all for it. I haven't seen one yet. Maybe a repin of sorts? What's funny is that an ITB Zetec was typically sold as a "200hp package" to start yet in my case I'm nowhere near that at the moment. Last dyno yielded my around 135whp

Good luck for sure! Thank you for the update and doing all the legwork. I hope it gives you satisfaction knowing you've helped others out in your ventures as I'm borderline at the same situation as you are. My Zetec oil pressure has been... erm... finicky at best recently and my battle to squeeze any HP out of the Zetec with TWM's and the Pectel so far has been not very fruitful. If it makes you feel any better I think just the TWM ITB rebuilt ran me about $2k. What ECU is Raceline going to provide? That price includes a tune from them? Will it mate with your existing Pectel harness? That's one of the problems I've ran into when looking into alternate ECU options. 200hp is presumed crank right? I'll be very curious to see how it comes out on a roller dyno.
