  1. I am on my 4th mid-engine car and on my second Caterham. For car placement in the Seven, forget about the front wheels. You are sitting between the rear wheels, which are further apart. Concentrate on where those wheels are going. You will feel developing oversteer sooner and more-clearly in the Seven than in your mid-engine cars. If you find an autocrossing club that has practice days, sign up. I suggest that you attach a pylon-redirecting device to your seat bolts. I had no trouble with pylon damage to my first Caterham, but did destroy a rear fender on my second Caterham.
  2. I live in Minnesota and am seriously considering taking out my heater. Never had one on my previous 1979 Caterham.
  3. I wasn't actually trying to lie. It was an honest typo. I am 5'8" and 155 pounds. BTW, I saw a rear-window-zipper mod in Lowflying. Looks really interesting. The author took the top to Caterham and they sent it out to their supplier. The author is trying to convince Caterham to have them all made this way. Well, I don't live in England, and I'm not shipping this top both ways. I have a veteran upholstery guy here in Saint Paul on the job. He should be able to source the extra pull and do the mod. I see exactly what needs to be done, don't have the wherewithal to do it myself. I will try to remember to take photos and post them here when the job is done.
  4. Thanks. One of the "gifts" that came with my ADD is the ability to actively search for an object, look directly at it, and not see it. I would have sworn that there was no such icon present, but there it is.
  5. I believe this is just the sort of thing that would have been done. I suggest you measure up to see which setup was used. If everything fits with the engine in the rearward position, I see no reason to not do it. That said, my 1991 car with the engine far-enough-forward to stick under the nose does have more than 50% of the weight on the rear wheels. This is without driver and without the spare tire and bolt-on bracket.
  6. No sound.
  8. And I think it is funny that after many decades, the name of the SCCA Region in Minnesota and some parts beyond has a whole new meaning due to social media.
  9. Yeah, I see the oversteer. Not as real surprise that this car is basically laid out like the "roadsters" that ruled Indianapolis for decades. I recall that as the mid-engine cars (that the roadster drivers insisted on calling "rear engine") took over the roadster drivers didn't like them because they could not feel the oversteer as clearly. As much as I love mid-engine cars (I'm on my fourth), I think the Seven will be good for me in autocrossing as my balance, never very-good, seems to be getting worse in my dotage.
  10. I believe that was my method to mount a 5-panel Wink mirror in my Lotus Europa. When I arrived at something that worked with two pieces of cereal-box cardboard, I traced these pieces onto aluminum sheet. Worked a treat for years. I used the corrugated stuff for the design of the pylon-redirector on my Seven, then brought that pattern to the Metal Supermarkets in Roseville MN to shear me a piece of 1/4" aluminum. I plan on lightening holes when I get around to it.

  12. OK. The light is starting to come on. You are talking about the same force that causes S-shape wind-up in leaf-spring cars. I can see that the deDion setup cures this for the driveline, as the torque is imparted directly to the chassis at the diff. The forces will still be applied to the deDion tube under braking, because these cars have outboard disk brakes.
  13. I don't understand what "twist" you mean. The axle is located at three points. In any combination of acceleration, braking, and cornering, these three points will always lie in a single plane. Whatever the effects the method may have on roll-steer and the like, the axle housing is not going to twist itself in its own frame of reference. This is certainly not the case with several other methods of live-axle location. I can prove that by my experience with the different method used in a Cortina GT.
  14. When I had a live-axle 1979, it was not about the power, it was about the cornering. I'm an autocross freak. Now that I see the deDion setup, I see it is much more robust for lateral location. I intend to put my Zetec in and I think the setup is up to it. I don't expect to put huge wheels on it. The 6.5 x 15 Prisoner wheels should do fine, though I did like the 7 x 15 Panasport wheels I had for my 1979 car.
  15. I don't think that would clear the fuel tank on my 1979 car. All in all, I'm happy to have the deDion setup on my 1991.
  16. It goes on. After May belts in, he isn't sharp enough possess the key and Clarkson does it to him again.
  17. Since my maintainers are all only 1 amp (or maybe some are 1.5) I think I'm OK with my AGM batteries.
  18. You were pushing the finger-in-the-ear and corner-of-the-mouth a bit, eh? Or didn't your CO use that standard?
  19. Obviously, he does not know how to take off the roof.
  20. I thought I was a member. Must have missed the notice to renew. Only the two Caterhams I described were/are mine. I sold the yellow one to a gentleman on Cape Cod. It now has been passed on.
  21. My first Caterham was a 1979 1600 Kent with twin Dellorto carbs, yellow with green center stripe. Current Caterham came to me all Ford Moonstone Blue. I have had the nose and fenders redone in Caterham Firecracker Yellow. This thread is for non-Sevens, but you can view an album of my Caterham stuff at https://www.flickr.com/photos/pethier/albums/72177720312826035/
  22. I spent the late 1960s and early 1970s as the #1 grid marshal at Donnybrooke/BIR (and sometime nobody-special grid marshal at Road America). I was present at many CanAm races in the midst of these cars. At Donnybrooke/BIR I was always at the front of the grid and thus got the full audio experience of every car that started the race. I have absolutely no idea why I am not deaf. (The spell-checker does not recognize the spelling of Donnybrooke. It thinks the track was named for the suburb of Dublin. Nope. It was named for Donny Skogmo and Brooke Kennard, two gentlemen who had died at Road America.)
