Lightweight (lithium most likely) battery recs?
Croc replied to supersportsp's topic in General Tech
John - I had an Evo melt down once on the early days of the current CSR. The Odyssey batteries never have. Killed one once from my own stupidity. Yes they are heavier but still a nice small footprint that you can package easily in a seven's engine bay. Easy to get replacement through Amazon Prime. Ouch - Earthx batteries are pricey. I guess the bonuses were good this year in Seattle! -
Looks like Christmas arrived a little late in that garage! Welcome to the forum! I also chatted with you at Bruce's Christmas party. You picked a sweet spot in the seven range - not too much hp for the road and very quick for the track day fun. 13 inch wheels are perfect - I run them on my 420R and CSR - less rotational mass so you accelerate quicker and the thicker side profile improves ride comfort and (to my mind) improves handling. My first suggestion is do an inventory of everything you have now. I guarantee you will be missing the old bolt, nut or part so its always good to identify this now, put your request in to get them so that you do not get an interruption during the build right when you have momentum going. Looking forward to seeing this build progress! Cheers mike

I'be always had good results with the Odyssey PC680 -
Another vote from me for Bruce's attention to detail builds and the exceptional workshop. I attended the Christmas party in December and it is a very well designed facility that is immaculate. Its more pristine and better designed than the actual Caterham factory in the UK. Great group of local owners and customers that are very happy with their Beachman Racing purchases - I enjoyed chatting with them. However, I have a strong suspicion it is a place that is quite damaging to one's wallet if you are not mindful. Its a really nice location too. Wish my travels took me to PNW more often.

THey are marketing folks you know. I doubt they have ever dealt in reality in any point in their lives. Calculators are beyond them. Apparently they are also the profession with the biggest dicks. Never would have guessed...
-
No I would not point that out. I just would point out that it is past 12pm where you are and there some very nice vineyards within 10 minute drive of your home that would sell you a lovely delicious bottle of red or white to pour a glass or three and breathe... For the record, I think you are worth it. Your Westfield demands the best. Think of your Westfield as your high maintenance trophy wife. She demands the most expensive everytime - shoes, kitchen, renovations, clothes, dogs, minions, etc. Well it works for me, which is probably why I live in a small 1 bedroom hovel in a flood zone. Being serious for a moment - bit surprising that it is so difficult to get the right size bearings with quality suppliers. I mean, how hard could it be.
-
I should clarify. The seat is just a seat - no frame or other hardware. You need the hardware to attach seat to car. I used the TBF1 brackets (inward facing) as they are designed for the seat I bought the B7XL (plus the B6) https://www.tillett.co.uk/shop/exd-TB-F1-Aluminium-brackets-pair.asp?id=638 The slider/runner is still useful for moving the seat forward and back - you just have to drill an extra mount hole in the Caterham runners to accommodate the Tillett brackets. You can always use the Tillet mounts direct to floor but then pre-supposes only you will ever drive your car. Other seats will use different brackets - probably TBFIA or TB1 given the seating options you have available to you.
-
Excellent thread. Well done for bringing the car back to life!
-
Hi Jay! Yes - its fitted to my 420R. Its a B7XL-47 with edges cut which makes it 43cm wide. If I did not cut the edges it would be 47cm wide. I used the TB1 brackets for mounting. The width is the critical measure - the SV maximum acceptable seat width is 47cm or 18.5 inches. Now you want a little clearance around the sides as you would otherwise carve up the interior side walls with scratches as the seat flexes slightly. Thats why I ended up with the edges cut on the 47cm seat. Going from the catalog here: https://www.tillett.co.uk/shop/documents/downloads/TILLET_CAR_BROCHURE_2020_WEB.pdf There are a lot of Tillett seats that will fit an SV/CSR (do not use for a Caterham S3): - B7XL-47 with edges cut 43cm - B1 is standard rolled edges is 44.5cm - B2 was standard for the Caterham CSR Superlight (same dimensions as the SV) - 44.5cm (using the rolled edges) - B4 comes in 40 or 43cm seat width. 40 will fit an S3 Caterham. 43cm will fit an SV. I personally find this seat reclines me too much - 50/60 degree seat angle is better - B6 screamer is in 40 and 44cm widths so that works - B6XL Screamer 43 (i.e. a 47 with edges cut for clearance) will fit - Bruce at Beachman Racing said to me once he has used it before. I started with this one in my fitting session at Tillett but found I prefered the B7 seat design comfort. - B6 40 and 44 regular plus B6XL 43 seem to work You can also buy the Tillett seat runners but everyone I know adapts the Caterham seat runners by drilling an extra hole - thats what my 420R ended up as. The lead times on Tilletts are pretty horrific so you will have to see what the US dealer has in stock currently. ONe alternative if he does not have anything in stock is to buy off Caterham directly - Tillett make the seats and then Caterham private label them. https://caterhamparts.co.uk/seats/3024-seat-csr-alcantara-carbon-fibre.html?search_query=seat&results=78 https://caterhamparts.co.uk/seats/6258-seat-carbon-composite-sv.html?search_query=seat&results=78 https://caterhamparts.co.uk/seats/6794-seats-carbon-padded-620r-sv.html?search_query=seat&results=78 The second alternative for seats is Reverie - another dangerous website with seven goodies. https://www.reverie.ltd.uk/seats.php I suggest you measure your car to confirm sizing then go comparing.

I apply the 80/20 rule. I probably get around 80-90% of the cars for sale fairly easily. The last 10% are not worth the much higher effort for me as they show the seller is not doing their job of marketing the car properly. In that instance, let the opportunistic buyer snaffle it up if they come across it. Or the seller gains intelligence for a lack of sale and works out where to market the car to get a sale. -
Anker - while the car is up, check what the previous owner used to attach the rear wings/fenders to the body. Should be small nylon plastic bolts or fixings. Not metal type. The logic is that if you are autocrossing, attending a track day or just meadering along the road and hit something (orange cone, small animal, etc) with the rear wings then the nylon bolts let go without puckering up the sheet ali on the body. Repair is then easier and cheaper. Easy thing to see and fix.

I have seen your farming - he deserves to learn how to drive properly!

Thank you Bruce. Coming from someone with such an eclectic background in past car ownership (like me) that counts for a lot. Good luck finding your perfect seven later this year. -
Easy! That would be his mother. Have you asked Robin yet? :seeya: Bring him up in October, I have just the car for him in the green group. Low powered, rear wheel drive, full cage, good brakes. Its a Nissan so none of the hairdresser smirks.

In the 420R I also switched to a new type of Tillett that angled the backrest in such a way that I did not have to be an orangutang to use it - you know legs to short and arms too long. So I visited Tillet on the Isle of Sheppey in UK and had a fitting session with Steve Tillett. Excellent time spent. They had a seat that accommodated my vast bulk and fitted my Caterham. The only downside is that the production line wait times are up to 4 months now with Tillett. They are so successful that they cannot turn the products out quick enough. On the seat front, with the assistance of Ian (many of you have met him at the NJMP event - he mechanically saves us along with TJ), I decided to make a resin bead seat for my CSR. So I bought this kit: https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=4525 My first lesson - the XL size is too big for the bathtub area of a Caterham SV even after removing everything there. Hindsight says it should have been a Large or possibly a Medium. So step 1 is vacuum out all the grvel and detrius from a year on track. Step 2 is tape or cardboard over all the sharp protrusions in the space that would otherwise threaten to rip the plastic bag of beads and cause them to flow everywhere in the cockpit. So bolts, chassis tube ends/braces, belt buckles, etc Step 3 is trial fit of bead bag (no resin yet). This test showed pretty quickly that we had too many beads in the bag. So about 25% to 35% came out and we test fit again. That was better. Step 4 is prepare for the vacuum - there is a hose into the bag. You connect it to a vacuum and it keeps the bag under suction through the initial cure fitting. At this point, take a piss, dump or whatever as you wont be going for a while. Secondly, wear long pants as the resin curing is quite hot on bare skin. Step 5 - mix the resin into the bag. WE ended up using all the resin as the mixture felt too dry. You put the bag on the floor and knead the resin around the beads so there are no clumps. Step 6 - Bag with beads and resin into the car. Then lower yourself GENTLY into the bag. Squish yourself, ass, legs, shoulders, hips, etc. to get comfortable for a good driving position. Move the beads around to where they need to be. Once you are comfortable then stop moving and sit still. Vacuum is on. Ian brought a beer and a donut for me to snack on. I had the phone. Otherwise I just gazed around the hangar. At this point you contemplate the messiness of our existence. Jeff's blue Caterham awaiting its yet again rebuilt engine (hint - dont use 10,000rpm on a Zetec). A certain blue Holden awaiting its engine to go back in. A Corvette with a blown clutch. The rental blue Datsun 200sx for hackers to destroy. After an hour I was allowed out. The seat had firmed up enough that my ass impression was not going to move. Getting out was entertaining. I could not use my traditional hand holds to lever myself up plus I could not move my legs much given the beads. And my non-removable steering wheel was where I needed to be. Having Ian piss himself laughing over my predicament was not helping me. Eventually... Yes folks, that impact crater, is my ass impression. Looks like aftermath of the movie, Deep Impact. Its amazing where your body leaves divots - a love handle on one side, a ballsac divot, my leather belt line, a wrinkle in my shirt, a hole where I had my SUV keys in my pocket, you get the idea. At this point we turned the vac off and left it to cure over the holidays. It only really needed 24 hours but we were heading out on holidays so not a problem. LAst weekend was removing it from the car. Using a hot knife you sledgehammer away about a third of what is there. It was at this point I discovered something critical: - if the bag is too big then it bunches up and creates chasms of plastic in between the beads - If you mold a bead seat under the lip of the center tunnel then it will not like coming out. The hot knife is key. It makes life so much easier carving and shaping the seat for the space. You need to car space channels for the belts on the sides and underneath for the submarine belts. Need to carve a hole for the submarine belt to surface through the seat to meet crotch. So I had to cut it out in 2 pieces but it worked out fine in the end as the pieces were easier to manage than one whole seat. Currently off at the upholsterers who will professionally cover it in nomex and make it look better than anything I could do. I can focus on another car project/basket case to solve. Now its time to sort out a head rest so that we dont have helmet against roll bar. More to follow.
-
When does he get his license? Maybe bring him up to NJMP and we let him loose in the Stalker in the green group?
-
Minions dear, minions! I don't think so. I already have the burnt orange chairs of shame in my office. I solve that problem by rarely being there and traveling constantly.
-
I have been busy cleaning up my UK Caterham. A nice detail, some polishing, full servicing, new front wing brackets, a Tillet seat - bling bling! All ready now for first event of the year first week of MArch at Donington UK. Spa-Francorchamps then follows two weeks later. Who is coming with me to Spa-Francorchamps this year?
-
Josh and Ross have the details. This is their idea so I prefer they keep control of the communications with R&T for consistency of marketing message. The NJMP event is likely too late in 2020 to coincide with the plans for this R&T car - unfortunate but thats how it is.

Is there really no way we can import?
