  1. You never know Glen - it may just work out that way. Anyway it only takes a month or so to restore a Europa.... :seeya:
  2. NEW Pre-Lit Westfield - nicely detailed with clams http://www.mendelsgarage.com/listings/1990-lotus-super-seven-westfield/
  3. This old post may assist - assuming the products are still available. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?4756-Cooling-Hoses-for-a-Zetec-SVT&highlight=hoses
  4. LOL - no Miata. Having two sevens is a little greedy. Having one seven will allow me to (hopefully) better focus on finishing off my 3 active restoration jobs - the Beemer, the Blue Holden and the cigarette packet. You are right on the registration - if that Caterham cannot be easily registered in any state then I don't think any can.
  5. The stone protectors on the rear wings have seen their share of stones but it is not bad for the age/mileage of the car. How does it drive? Really well. I use the 16” wheels when driving on the road to give sufficient ground clearance given the pathetic state of NJ/PA/NY roads. It rides very well – better than all of my cars other than the Caterham CSR. The car was corner weighted for a driver of my (significant) weight. Its easy enough to re-weight. The car has been taken on the track. I have a logbook, which will come with the documentation package. It handles very well and is very enjoyable to drive. It can lap faster than Xcarguy’s V8 Stalker in the rain. It has embarrassed its share of bigger hp cars. A track video should give you an idea of its performance While it is a wet sump engine, I have been careful to ensure the oil levels are precisely correct before going on track and not had any fluctuations in oil pressure despite having the 15 degree long sustained banking on the last corner of the Lightning Circuit at NJMP. The same corner can produce trace oil smoke at wide-open throttle coming out of the banking but that’s because there is a residual oil at the top end that makes it way into the inlet and ultimately combustion process. Backing off fractionally solves that (you can hear me do that in the video). If you wanted to track this car more regularly then I would suggest installing a dry sump or Accusump and potentially shifting away from the current plenum intake (which would give you more hp too). The car comes with a brand new Raceline baffled oil sump (and installation kit) which has never been fitted. There is also a new Raceline cam cover in black crackle finish - again uninstalled - with the gasket. The original engine camshaft will come with the car should you wish to revert back to stock. The "warm" camshaft fitted by Caterham USA upon original build in 2013 works best once it is warmed up as it can be lumpy and require additional revs when cold immediately after start up. This is normal from my owning/observing other sister cars with the same engine spec. At any rate T-9 gearboxes work best when allowed to warm a little. Will I fit? It’s a Caterham SV – it’s as big and roomy as a seven comes. I am very confident you will fit. I am 5’11; size 11 feet, with a substantial bulk reflecting I have more chins than a Chinese phone book. I have squeezed an anonymous forum member (lets call him Karl) into my previous yellow sister Caterham SV who was 6’7, size 13 feet and 320lbs. I have jammed a 350lb chap into my CSR for a track run as a passenger. With a quart of oil, some slim line moccasins or race boots I am confident I will get you fitted in the car and driving. Getting out may be the issue though…. Price I am asking $30,000 firm/no haggles. I don’t need to sell it for financial reasons and could quite happily keep it for drives. However, I don’t drive it enough given my various other cars, restoration projects and other substantial time commitments on me so the fair thing to do is help it find a new caring home. Car is located in Millville, NJ in a very nice climate controlled garage. I travel frequently so some level of advance warning is needed to inspect the car or for me to take additional photos. This may be a lost effort but to those people who wish to make silly low-ball offers – please don’t. To everyone else, I look forward to your serious inquiries. Cheers Mike SOLD
  6. Body Condition It looks better than me but it is a 14-year-old seven – it has some stone chips. The worst is on the passenger side front wing – this was here when I got it. Both sides of the bonnet have some light scratching from where the previous owner let the windscreen fall over. So light that I could not get it to appear on my iPhone! There is the usual scratching underneath the bonnet scuttle lip but this is not visible with the bonnet on.
  7. History Referring to the Caterham VIN this car was a 2001 SV chassis that was first registered by Jon Nelson of Caterham USA in June 2003. It was used as athe SV demonstrator and media car in late 2003. The road tests are available to read online. Originals of the articles come with the car documentation package. Car & Driver February 2004 http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/caterham-super-seven-roadsport-sv-specialty-file Automobile February 2004 http://www.automobilemag.com/news/caterham-7-2/ Autoweek http://autoweek.com/article/car-news/2003-caterham-super-seven-roadsport-sv-fundamentally-fun-caterham-makes-super-seven It also appears in the LOG 36 Princeton preview video here: Reconstructing the ownership history, I am the 4th owner. The chain appears as: June 2003 - Registered in CO by Caterham USA as new. January 2004 - Purchased by gentleman in VA or West VA at 2508 miles June 2013 - Purchased by a gentleman in GA at unknown mileage. April 2014 – Purchased by me at 9000 miles The car has a clean title in NJ as a 1967 Lotus 7. It uses the CO assigned VIN and description as it was originally titled and registered back in 2003. A package of documentation from previous owners, service history, etc. will come with the car. This includes the assembly manual plus the Zetec installation supplement manual.
  8. New Penske adjustable shocks have been installed. These were custom valved by Meteor Motorsport to be suitable for the lightweight of a Caterham. Currently they are set up on the second last softest setting, as it is perfect for road touring. I also installed a battery cut off switch plus an Odyssey PC680 lightweight battery. Mechanically it is up to date with its servicing. The only small thing is a quarter sized drop of oil from the bell housing will sometimes appear on the floor overnight after a run. Mileage is approximately 11000 as I continue to use the Caterham prior to sale.
  9. Belts were replaced at the beginning of this year with 4-point Caterham belts. The crotch belts come with the car but are uninstalled. Expiry date on these belts is 2021. For around town the three point belts are installed. Wheels One set of 6”x16” Caterham ‘Wagon Wheels’. These are the original wheels that the car came with. Four are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza tires with approximately half to 1/3rd life left. Spare is fitted with a new tire. One set of 6”x13” (front) and 8”x13” (rear) Caterham Diamond Cut Wheels in Black fitted with Avon ZZRs at approximately half-life. 6”x13” Spare is fitted with an Avon ZZR. Windscreen is standard Caterham frame but does not have the heating elements within it that usually come standard on new kits – so the glass must have been replaced at some point re-using the existing frame. During my ownership the clutch was replaced. Usual consumable service items such as fluids, plugs, hoses, wheel bearings, bushings, ball joint boot, etc. were replaced. The car comes with the Caterham jack kit - never used by the looks of it.
  10. SOLD 2003 Caterham SV Zetec I am selling my 2003 Caterham SV Zetec. This was the first SV chassis imported and built in the US and was used as a demonstrator car with the various car magazines of the day. I used the car primarily as my road touring car and occasionally on track. Key Specs Ford ZX3 2L Zetec. It was modified by Caterham USA with a slightly warmer camshaft. This took the original 130hp at the flywheel up to a supposed 160hp. While it has not been dyno’ed, from my seat of the pants driving it feels like about 140hp area. T-9 5 speed gearbox – regular gear ratios unmodified. Synchro feels perfect. De Dion rear end No limited slip differential Cloth seats Perspex (or polycarbonate) wind wings Side wings for weather protection with integrated mirrors Hood (no hood bag) Boot cover (no tonneau)
  11. Its easier to be cheap if you can mass produce enough quantity. What is more astounding is that the market is so big to sell that many. I bet you could do bigger volumes if you got a seven down to that price range with turn key feature, ease of title and registration and a high level of quality. Its not just price that is challenging but after sales service, high strung nature, and the absolute pain to title and register and comply with emissions.

  16. Ok I bodged a temporary solution on a Windoze laptop with Internet Explorer and I am reminded of my absolute hatred of all Microsoft products. It will only work when I am at home and since I spend 150+ nights a year away from home then this will not be happening a lot. Reposted the partial list from yesterday and added in the missing. 19. Its a very different engine feel to the 2.3L Cosworth. My CSR builds up speed through torque quite progressively. Its impressive but the 620R with its supercharger really takes it to another level. It just spools up so much quicker - nothing low down like the 2.3L engine. I suspect some of that acceleration comes through the sequential gearbox too. Hi Mike - You have to be careful. There are lots of examples on the videos of me coming out of a corner, applying power and then when the supercharger spools in having to catch it with opposite lock. Throttle modulation of the power effects is critical to be smooth and fast. I got the hang of it and enjoyed it but it is a different style of driving to the CSR where i have a better grip across the rear tires and less issue with it breaking loose. Both are fun in their way. I would say the 620R is the purist choice because its more frisky beyond 9/10ths than the CSR. Hi Seb - Matt should probably chime in here but as I heard it on the day, his car had a suspension set up issue which he only discovered after being able to get other owner inputs at the Sevens event. He inherited that from the dealer he bought it from. It was locked down hard which means any bump is going to skitter the tires and make it more likely to break rear end grip under power application. Bulk power and a supercharger just makes that worse. My CSR is at the other end of the spectrum with a quite soft long travel suspension which is alarming to look at in photos but when driving inspires confidence and trust pretty quickly. The 620R is set up somewhere in between those two ends of the spectrum - just like any other de Dion Caterham I have driven is like - slightly soft bias, good ride, quite compliant. The Bookatrack team sell and maintain Caterhams - they know how to set them up very well. I have never driven a bad car of theirs. My personal view is that a Caterham responds best to a softer suspension set up as it accentuates the weight transfer in a lighter car making it more nimble and maximizing grip at the same time. Getting the turd on the table out of the way first - its not cheap but for me I want to drive the race tracks of Europe. You have to hire a race car that is fully maintained with fuel, consumables, etc. You bend it you pay to fix it. So I drive with a reasonable safety margin. You have accommodation costs plus food/drinks. You can organize your own accommodation but I prefer the offered package since it makes it really social to all being at the same hotel and regrouping in the evenings. You are flying in to Europe to join this. I had a one way rental car this year - Lisbon to Malaga so that was expensive in one way service fee. I refuse to add up the total cost as man math does not work that way! :jester: Each trip is organized differently so you will just need for it to be announced in early 2018, get the details and sign up early. Rental Caterhams go quickly. Your driving has to be good standard and respectful of other drivers ontrack - drive like a dick and you will be kicked out (so no dive bombing slower cars....) Jonny at Bookatrack has dreams of doing a US West coast trip for the company anniversary in 2022 - Laguna Seca, Sonoma, and one other to be determined. He came close to doing it once before but the 92db limit at Laguna Seca caused issues. I suspect he will have to modify the standard Donington muffler set up (two mufflers - one on the side and a second under the fuel tank at rear) to get it consistently down to 92db. Too many cars out there were louder than that, including my 620R rental.
  20. The video has second class sound thanks to me having to bodge a microphone and mix it in separately as a result of my equipment breakage in Portimao. Still it gives you an idea of the circuit. So who is joining me next year? Next years schedule is not on the Bookatrack website yet but there is hope that the dates will work for Italy as they plan next years events.
  21. So then it was on to the last circuit – Jerez in Spain. Built in the mid-1980s it has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix in the 1990s plus host to touring cars, Le Mans prototypes and MotoGP. This is an unusual circuit. Not as much elevation change as Estoril or Portimao. Its specialty is head games – the corners trick you visually so that you need to be on your game. I thought it was ok but it was the third best of three superb circuits this trip. It was a stinking hot day. I went through 8 liters of water while at the track and needed more to properly rehydrate. This was the circuit where I started melting the shoe soles over the ball of my feet. The tires were all slimy too – I had to be extra careful given the grip was compromised. Now there are some very fast drivers on Bookatrack track days but their ‘gung-ho’ style often comes back to haunt them with unfortunate incidents. Jerez brought out the worst of these. So Hotshot Shane is coming up behind me rapidly. I am on my first lap out for the session and I see him coming. I was timing to let him past next corner however I never had too. The video shows what happens if you go into a fast sweeper too fast. 1. The rear steps out 2. Our erstwhile driver counter steers to offset the rear 3. He comes off the power to get the car rear end back under control 4. Weight transfers to the front very very quickly 5. Weight applied onto front tires with a ton of lock applied suddenly grip and the car shears in the direction you are trying to avoid going 6. It’s all over very quickly. But in many European circuits you have gravel traps to slow you down. These are not good as you get bogged down and have to be towed out. Gravel can get into belts and dislodge them or truly upset the timing creating a very expensive engine problem. More concerning, if you go into a gravel trap spinning then a wheel or two can dig in and you are rolling at that point.
  22. The track map really does not reveal the essence of this circuit – it has elevation. http://members.chello.nl/e.tabois/images/circuits/portimao_circuit.jpg Its very old school in feel – blind corners, rollercoaster nature, very fast and unforgiving. It is an intimidating track – one of my top 2 challenge tracks. There are corners where you are committing to corners without knowing what’s in front of you and without being able to actually see the apex or track out. It requires big balls for bravery in key corners and a lot of active thinking to avoid the mind games the circuit plays on it. This is one of the great new circuits of recent times. This is one circuit I need to go back to. The elevation change is the key to Portimao. The video flattens out the true elevation feel but look at the altimeter height changes to get a sense of how quickly you are changing elevation. High speed understeer was a real issue on many corners. The last corner coming onto the straight was particularly bad as you popped over a “ledge” the car dropped and the front just scrubbed away from you. You had to ride through it until the grip returned then you could apply power otherwise you just understeer off into the gravel if you apply power too early. It was one hell of a ballsy corner. Apologies in advance of this video. The GoPro audio adapter for the external mic broke and so sound comes and goes with static crackles in between.
  23. And it was during my day at Estoril that I discovered an unfortunate side effect of a Caterham 620R….heat. The chassis tubes transfer so much heat that my racing boot heels started to melt. Breaking out the trusty duct tape worked on a session-by-session basis but you had to keep reapplying as it melted each 30-40 min session. At Jerez where it was a stinking hot day – call it close 100 degrees F – then even the ball of the foot sole area started to melt. Trust me you feel it on the soles of your feet Then it was off to Portimao in the Algarve region of Portugal. I picked up my trusty rental from ‘Uranus Hertz’ for this trip and this time it was a beast…worth killing. It had a 1 point something 4-cylinder piece of shit engine. Six speed gearbox – I am sure they were labeled slow, slower, quite slow, really slow, effing slow… It had 7 seats but I doubt the engine could have got it rolling with 7 average people inside. But…somehow…I managed to see [censored]kmh on a downhill motorway stretch in some country with the engine ferrets screaming their lungs out with my foot mashed through the firewall and out by a headlight. So technically it was not slow but it took several hours to build up to that speed. Portimao Circuit was built in 2008 for nearly US$250 million and it shows. The circuit is impressive. Big money has clearly been spent even since then. Big grandstands. Impressive viewing areas. Decorative ponds outside the cafeteria. There were even sensors under the curbing to monitor when you exceeded track limits and crossed onto the curbs – something I am badly guilty on all tracks (as the video shows). The track is used for Superbikes. It has hosted Le Mans cars and a test session for Formula 1.
  24. Here is one of the slow down measures implements – a Z turn, which was so tight as to be absurd. But it worked – I was slow there. The 620R was fast, as you would expect. Plenty of grip from the 13 inch Avon ZZRs although it was very easy to break the tires loose coming out of the corners. The torque effect on the wheels as the supercharger spools up did not assist the task of minimizing wheel spin while trying to put the power down. The Sadev sequential is pretty easy to use. Lift the lockout ring on the gear stick and pop back to get into first. Let go the clutch and you are away. Then just hammer it up the revs and drag the gear lever back for next gear and on you go. Going down is just the reverse – pop the lever forward. No clutch needed. The electronic gubbins cut the revs and allow the next gear to slot home. The only downside was the race clutch. On/Off in nature it was difficult to get away smoothly. I solved the problem by just getting 4000rpm and just dropping the clutch. Here is some video of an afternoon session to give you a taste of what the circuit is like. The sound is just as it was – supercharger whine and all.
