  1. Congratulations on your "new" car! You are in a nice part of the country to be able to enjoy the seven as it is intended. I can say it is socially acceptable to have two sevens - one for track and one for road - I do! :iagree:
  2. Thats a great idea - let her drive the seven on rainy days! Actually....does it ever rain in CA? They are not hard to drive at all. All the inputs are light, nice soft suspension (at least my two Caterhams are), comfy seats, etc. Clearly they handle well and probably are easier to park than the family SUV - although I would tell her to modify the bump parking style. She will have bad hair moments though. This forum is mostly full of old ladies who drive them...:leaving:
  3. I saw this car at Gettysburg LOG and chatted with Ross there - lovely chap. I am sorry to see that he is moving the car on but it is a wonderful opportunity for someone to get a beautiful seven I really cannot add anything to what TheDingo8MyBaby/Meryl Streep (world's worst Australian accent in a movie) said above - I agree with him/her/it wholeheartedly. Lower $30s. Pristine and freshly restored models with desirable spec are in the $40s and this is not pristine. I hope Ross is patient with the sale and aims to catch the right buyer who will drive and cherish the car as much as he has in his stewardship.
  4. Guys lets keep it civil please. I am not sure you will find a nice neat link on a website that will make that fine definitional distinction - I have never seen one. The Government does not make our life easy that way, which is really frustrating. The answer to your question is going to be contained in the definition of "motor vehicle" in the Clean Air Act to which there is supplemental administrative guidance in regulations and other unpublished EPA guidance papers not available to the normal person without hiring an attorney. What I have learned from my imports is that the usual fair American way of looking for legal loopholes and diving through them is not viewed happily by NHTSA/EPA/et al when it comes to vehicle import compliance as on the fringes of the rules, things are applied inconsistently as I have painfully discovered on my imports. So you have three options: (a) Roll the dice and import without doing any more homework and find out what the rules are in practice on that day, at that port, for that inspector. Do you feel lucky? (b) Start dialing the NHTSA and EPA until you find a helpful, intelligent, car enthusiast official who wants to help you do the right thing as he appreciates your sincerity in checking (they do exist - I found one...once). They will steer you on to the right path but even then they will admit (at least they did to me) that when you are in the gray area of a unusual or 'risky' import, the final outcome will very much depend on which inspector, which port, time of the month, luck, which day of the week it is and is it a good day, etc types of variables. © You hire a specialist attorney to advise you on this matter. More expensive than option (b) it does save you time.
  5. The EPA Clean Air Act governs this http://www2.epa.gov/importing-vehicles-and-engines/kit-car-policy Remember that the EPA applies a 21 year threshold, not 25 years like NHTSA.
  6. Welcome to the forum. Post 13 on this thread will steer you in the right direction. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?10365-1999-Birkin-S3-(Last-5-of-build)/page2&highlight=import Then for forum members, Bigdog, has imported one from Germany fairly recently so he will be a good source of information. Cheers mike
  7. There is a shipload of Sevens on Lemmings. Some may have sold since Lemmings only refreshes every few months. 2009 Caterham SV $40k http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/unspecified/1775640.html 2002 Caterham SV $34.5k http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/super-7/1773111.html 1979 Caterham crossflow at $20k (although one forum member was all over this like a chihuahua on a pork chop - so it may have sold?). http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/super-7/1765801.html 2000 Caterham Superlight $30k http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/superlight-r500/1757619.html 2012 Caterham SV R400 $59k http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/unspecified/1729179.html Stalker $28k http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/lotus/7/1726421.html And my favorite ad - the dealer wank special Westy http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/lotus/super-seven/1763637.html

  9. I will be interested to hear how you think it drives compared to your old Westfield?
  10. 2009 Caterham SV Duratec for sale - I don't know how the seller can talk about the driving experience if he has only driven it 437 miles in 6 years! http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/lotus/caterham/1775640.html
  11. Thats very interesting. I had no idea that the chassis were so different between the 2 types. What exactly did you have to do to convert the chassis to road? Lights, indicators, exhaust...?
  12. LOL - spec racer registered for the road! Congratulations - I bet FL was nice this time of year! :seeya:
  13. Hi Maurice - If you are inquiring about the US and Canada then please reach out to Tom (Tbox56) who is Birkin USA distributor as he would know best. If you are inquiring about Birkin Australia then I suspect no-one has a clue on this forum. I will say I am aware of 3 Birkin wide bodies in existence in the USA, including Tom's demonstrator but I bet there are others.
  14. There are 2 separate projects underway to put Ecoboost engines into a Caterham SV and a Birkin XS. However, they are using a larger Ecoboost engine than the one you are inquiring of.
  15. Well done Sean - brilliant tip. I have been cursing the loss of search on Blatchat. I would not put on the new Blatchat - they will take down the old site if they know we know. Usual IT promises - they always seem to turn a perfectly good orgy into a clusterf$%%....oh wait...you are IT!
  16. Hello Dingo...or is Meryl Streep? Your comments on the Oregon Arch chassis clone are spot on. Sadly it needs work based on another forum member's message. From that I concluded it needs to come down in price to allow for the extra. Otherwise its sort of just like a Caterham without the price premium of a true S3 Lotus 7. 18 inch wheels on a seven is clearly a New York thing. Thank you for correcting me on the revolution wheels - I had them later in my mind.
  17. Hemmings ads 2002 SV for $34500 http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/super-7/1773111.html 1979 Caterham 7 crossflow for $20k although I think I saw a forum member chasing it midweek so it may have gone already...but will it be back for sale shortly at $30k? http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/cars-for-sale/caterham/super-7/1765801.html 2000 Caterham Superlight "R500" also separately advertised on this forum. 18. Barney the Dinosaur! The purple Westfield is back. I quite like the color and the car. The wheels are a shocker and should be replaced ASAP. I also hate all caps ads. http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/5200408918.html 1958 Lotus 7 that needs restoration and I would guess some fact checking verification. Listed on Cincinnati craigslist but is located in AZ? Seeks $25000 http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/5217456408.html Stalker SC v6 in AZ for $28000 http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/5226024560.html Unfinished Locost 7 kit in TX for $1200 As you can see by the pleading ad, the wife is withholding sex privileges until cleans out the garage. My view is that he should get rid of the wife - cheaper and the garage toys don't slap you back. http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/5226971139.html 1962 Lotus 7 freshly restored - asking $44500 in FL (despite being on CA plates?). Despite that the ad features some horrific poor quality photos and even some fingers in frames. And if you can adjust to the fuzzy views I fancy I can see some Caterham parts so it looks like they cheated. Revolution wheels would not have been on a 62 car? Hard to tell as the ad photo quality is just ridiculously bad. Pity as it looks really nice overall. http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/cto/5216024604.html Locost project for $1500 http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/5204430822.html Locost aloooominum (or aluminium) mid engined car mid project $5000. 19. In case you are wondering where the instrument panel thread disappeared to, well, Dan started a new thread here to allow discussion to continue without getting chopped up by the for sale links. Here is its new location: http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?10713-Instruments-in-Westfield-panel This week we have something interesting. Palatov D2 Asking $79888 which seems reasonable for the performance possibilities of embedding yourself into fellow motorists, buildings, bridges, etc. Being mid engine I would be wary of it biting me on lift off if I was driving. One thing that surprised me is how heavy it is - its as lead happy as a Stalker - which some lovable space cadet has already proved that with an LS engine you can reach take off velocity but not quite escape velocity for orbit... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes-Palatov-D2-/171928993040?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2807c43d10&item=171928993040 As an aside I love the dealer name "Cats Exotic" Try googling that (as I did) and you will have kitty galore on your browser and none of it relevant to the dealership. Must be owned by someone who has no idea of how to succeed on the internet. Locost build based of a Triumph 1500 that almost certainly rusted away in the 70s. Current bid at $6955 and no reserve with 16 hours to run. May end up being a bargain locost? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-LOTUS-7-/331653482541?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4d3816882d&item=331653482541 Then we have the reappearance of Robin Hood. A little seen seven brand here in the US. Not finished. No title and no MCO so that is a killer for some states on getting registered. Starting bid of $10700 with 7 days to run and no reserve. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-LOTUS-SUPER-SEVEN-FROM-ROBIN-HOOD-ULTRA-LIGHT-/201430853018?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2ee636e59a&item=201430853018 Any one looking for a Panoz AIV? I have come 10 of them this morning all for sale. Not sure why so many up for sale now? Here is one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes-Panoz-AIV-Roadster-/400995151684?forcerrptr=true&hash=item5d5d2c6f44&item=400995151684 Its not a seven but it will certainly out handle one. It also proves my theory that you could register anything for the road in Florida. Street legal "indy car". Oh geez - and here I am worried about driving a Caterham on the road. With this bad boy you could take out an SUV sump with your head and be a speed bump to mommy on a grocery run. Perfect for all occasions. But why is it 2000 pounds? Was it made out of heavy gauge sheet steel? Opening bid at $15000 with 4 days to run. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-Indy-Street-Legal-open-cockpit-/181872462131?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2a58718933&item=181872462131 Repeat. Locost V8 autocross car. http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/5228239176.html Its back but the price is now down to $25500. Methinks it has further to go. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/5223369730.html End of part 1
  20. Another one seen on Fleabay today - Triumph 1500 based Locost in BRG http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-LOTUS-7-/331653482541?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4d3816882d&item=331653482541 and a Robin Hood seven http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-LOTUS-SUPER-SEVEN-FROM-ROBIN-HOOD-ULTRA-LIGHT-/201430853018?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2ee636e59a&item=201430853018

  22. I just love that! The last photo of you with an indecently huge smile is just great. :seeya:
  23. The contact details for the lady are here - Alaskossie also asked. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?6281-Croc%92s-new-CSR-Superlight&p=53783#post53783 Also have a search by wind blocker. There are a few threads on it over the years. Alas, my car now has patina - stone chips, a little dirty because I have not washed it for a month, etc. but I love it all the same. I believe you should drive cars rather than make it a concours sculpture never driven. A seven especially so. None of my cars are show ponies - they have lavish mechanical care, a full detail once a year but I don't try to touch up their driving scars. I know all about the dilly dallying. I am doing the same on some of my car projects right now.... But my prevailing view is life is not a dress rehearsal - go do it!
  24. Yes. I started with the Soft Buts for Sevens wind blocker but felt it could be improved on. I then found a lady selling mesh wind blockers on Fleabay and bought that for $10. You can sort of see it attached to my roll bar in this photo. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a354/mjohnson555/seats/CSR/May%202011/DSC_5478_edited-1.jpg The mesh blocker is better than the SBFS version and does cut down buffeting. It is mesh with a double edging to which lots of little velcro tabs then wrap around the roll bar. It also noticeably cuts down on water getting flung on to the back of your neck when driving on a wet road. As for the mirrors, I have the Spa carbon (effect...not really) look attached to the windscreen. Caterham USA had little metal adapters that allow the Spa mirrors to be screwed onto the windscreen frame and not impact the perspex deflectors. Have you bought another seven?
