inchoate Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 I'm busy getting my engine back in my car and I went to refill my T9. Everything I've seen says it should take 1.9L of oil but I started to get oil out of the side plug hole after about 1.25L. Should I worry, or just get on with it?
sltous Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 I was able to add ~1.6L of rated 1.9L into my 6 speed and several members let me know there was likely to be significant oil in various parts of the transmission. How did you drain your transmission oil? I think I would re-fit and check fluid level a second time with the engine / transmission in place.
papak Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 According to Chris at BGH, 1.25l is plenty. Ford varied the amount over model years as they were striving to claim it would never need to be serviced. Hence, no drain plug. If you rebuild it, you can drill and tap the bottom of the aluminum spacer plate between the main case and the tail shaft for one. At the same time, weld a threaded bung at the right front of the top cover. This can serve as a fill port. Once you fill it, rotate the gears a bit and let it set a while. Then you can insert a dipstick in that port, mark the level and you will always be able to ease your mind regarding quantity.
inchoate Posted October 22, 2022 Author Posted October 22, 2022 Wow, turns out I don't spell very well when I'm multitasking. Sorry about that. The transmission dumped most of it's oil out of the tailshaft when I pulled the motor and I sucked out everything I could get while it was on the bench. I guess once it's back together I'll drive around a little bit and see if it will take a little more, not a big deal to top it off.
papak Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 I would set it up on some blocking nose down to allow any excess oil to drain into the main case before reinstalling it. Then, when you add new oil, you will have a better idea of quantity. A certain amount does migrate back to the fifth gear cluster in the tail housing but there is a drainage path back to the main case.
inchoate Posted October 25, 2022 Author Posted October 25, 2022 Good call. The car is on blocks at the moment and it will get it's nose raised when I fill the coolant system. No big deal to bring the back end up for a little bit as well.
inchoate Posted October 25, 2022 Author Posted October 25, 2022 Interesting... my speedo drive is on the right side.
7Westfield Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 speedo cable attaches to right side, but gear is removed thru left side
papak Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 I went to a VDO GPS driven speedometer. When I rebuilt the transmission, I removed the speedometer gear and plugged the holes. In the photo above, you see that the boss in which the fill plug is located is elongated. in some of the cases, depending on model year, they drilled the hole higher for more quantity.
Rosteri Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 The later T9 models all had the filler plug lower, also the Tracksport aluminium case has it at the lower location. I think 1.25L is just about right.
11Budlite Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 I used Redline MT90 in my old Birkin with T9 and didn't have any issues. 1
