Sean
Even if you bought a complete car in the UK, and disassembled it, sold the motor, etc. etc. there seems that there would be an avenue to import. Of course if you put the car into boxes in pieces. Disassembling a car and importing it into the U.S.A. as car parts is a violation of federal law, and is best avoided. bigdog
Disassembling a car and importing it into the U.S.A. as car parts is a violation of federal law, and is best avoided. exactly. Even if one got it through. You wouldn't have a proper title. I think that the only exception is if one brought a newer car to the USA for racing. But one of the requirements is that you need to render it unable to be returned to street trim. That is a large grey area though.
dhubbard422
Hello, My name is Don and I live just outside of Austin, TX. Somehow... I am rapidly approaching my 6th decade and I just bought a 7 (a Superformance S1) from a member on this forum. I work as an Interaction Designer for a large hardware and software company in Austin. When I was in my 20's I wormed my way into a gig as a Pro Formula Atlantic mechanic for almost a decade. I also have a motorcycle hobby, aka "habbit"... and I regularly ride and organize observed trials events; I think there are a couple of other 7 owners on this forum that also have this unique combination of interests. I also have an old airhead BMW - an R100GS PD for rides in the Hill Country. I expect that the GSPD and the 7 will compete for those weekend rides/drives... I started autocrossing a couple of years ago (in a Miata) and I plan to set up the Superformance to be a competent autocrosser, if it isn't already (TBD). I'll think I'll start a separate thread to ask for favorite back road suggestions - as my first trip in my new 7 will be to drive it home. The 7 is currently in sunny Southern California and I'll fly out next weekend to drive it back to Austin! At 1,400+ miles on secondary roads, it should be a bit of an adventure. When I was much younger, I once road a 1977 Ducati Super Sport from Toronto to Long Island, to DC and then Dallas - I hope the cross country trip in the 7 will be a bit more comfortable than that ride on the Duc! I hope to meet some fellow 7 owners too! It'd be great to learn if there are any regular or semi-regular gatherings of 7 owners in Texas. Thanks, Don
powderbrake
Don: Congratulations on your S1 Purchase. It is truly the most "car like" and plush of all the sevens models. I have always admired the S1's for their completeness and fit and finish. Enjoy your trip back home with it, and keep us updated on your mods, progress, trips etc.

locost7018
Well another trials rider on here. It must be the desire to go slow after going so fast in the 7. Welcome aboard, Russ "GasGas" Amos
Off Road SHO
I too just got my S-1 home from California, though it was from SF Bay area. Mine started to overheat when we started up the hills in warm weather so I parked it in Lancaster and went and got it with a trailer. Are you coming through Phoenix on I-10 or are you taking the I-10 > I-8 route through Tucson? Tom
dhubbard422
Thanks for the welcome everyone. Russ, I used to ride several trials series including: Nationals, Central Regionals, and the Texas State Series for trials. I think the 7 is a response to going slow for quite a while now... Where/which trials events do you ride? Tom, I thought I'd ask for route advice on another thread, but I am planning to avoid the super slab whenever possible. It's ok if my trip takes an extra day or two... For example, when leaving LA I'd like to take the Angeles Crest Hwy and then the Rim of the World Hwy to Big Bear Lake. From there, I'd head across AZ to Jerome or Sedona, something like Hwys: 62, 95, 72, 60, 89 & 89A. But, I'm open to suggestions for great roads! Thanks everyone, Don

Off Road SHO
Don't know yet, I've been too busy working to even look under the hood much. On the first instance I thought the MAF sensor had become disconnected from the intake tract; turns out it was just the heater intake. Then noticed that the cold air induction "hood" was not attached to the underside of the bonnet very well. I propped the intake up against the bonnet with a stick, but by then it was midnight and time to sleep. I DID notice that there is a relatively large space around the radiator that would allow incoming air to bypass going through the radiator. In my neck of the woods (desert actually) that is a big nono, since air will always take the path of least resistance. If you can take 40 to HWay 93 south to Hway 89 North, from Wilhoit to Prescott is a fantastic drive. Stay on 89 through Prescott and jump onto 89A to take you through Jerome and then down the hill to Clarkdale, another fantastic drive. From Clarkdale take Hway 260 East to Hway 87. Take 87 North to Flaggstaff. Good luck and have fun. Tom

dhubbard422
ride at the MATT grounds in Trenton, Mo. We just held the Round 7 & 8 of the Central Regional Series. I've ridden trials since 1974 We've probably ridden the same events! Y'all have a great riding spot in Trenton. I've ridden a couple of Central Regional events there - although the last time was getting pretty close to 10 years ago.

m wirth
Don, welcome here. I have gotten so much help on this site and even while lurking mostly it seems like you come to know most of the folks here. and for you and Russ I just purchased a new tool to keep the young'uns at bay for awhile, a new Sherco Cabestany Replica, it's lighter than my 2.9 so I can lift it off me after I've fallen without using the little button around my neck to call the parameds. happy blating mike

And this is way too much of a coincidence... I see from your avatar that you probably ride with C.O.T.A; I rode with C.O.T.A. at a few events in '96!! I was in Eugene for a year. Mike, I may have ridden an event or three with you too! Enjoy the Cabestany! I rode Sherco(s) from '99 - 2003 (and really enjoyed them). I've been riding Beta(s) since 2004. dhubbard422
They say these things cost 9900. What do they actually cost to get to your door? Just to clarify... "these things" are observed trials bikes - right? If so, it's really hard to spend $10K on one, but possible if you add a lot of goodies. $8K is a better ballpark for a new trials bike. The Gas Gas importer is very near you and I imagine that Dale would do you quite a deal. The Sherco importer (RYP) is in KY which isn't very far away either. HOTTTCAR
Sorry, should have been more explicit. The Sherco Cabestany replica was what I was referring to. Thanks for the info. Gale
dhubbard422
Mike would have to answer that one. Typically the special editions run about a grand more than the standard versions, which would be about a grand less than your number. Plus, in my experience, almost no one pays full retail for a trials bike...
