CarlB Posted August 25 Posted August 25 I got a package from Redline today. I was expecting a call or email to pay the tariff, but the package came without paying the tariff.
KnifeySpoony Posted August 25 Posted August 25 Just wait.... I ordered a set of wheels from Caterham. About a month after they were delivered I got a tariff bill for 37.5% from our gov. 1
Anthem Posted August 25 Posted August 25 Wow the timing of this posting, Today just got my Tarff bill through FedEx via mail for a eBay purchase that came from China @37.5%. 1

Xhilr8n Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Yeah I guess most of us will be helping Make America Great Again, I’ve an order with Soft Bits this should effect. If it really was about Economics and not about Ego it would sure feel different.

mrmustang Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Without getting into the politics end of things, which seem to throw each side into their own jaded sandbox, instead, I'll state that exporting certain medical/computer equipment to, or between other countries has always had a tariff of one kind or another applied to them, some as much as 10-20%, and this back in the 90's and early 2K's while I was still in those businesses. It was dealt with quietly, and factored in as part of doing business. Few people ever heard of this, or really cared, why, because it did not personally affect them. Now, as this thread has already proven, when it hits your personal wallet, you want to say that it draws a line in the sand. Personally, and without any politics involved, I'm happy to see the US take a stand, tariff percentage wise, not so much, but can see why some of them have to be as they are, at least for a short time while the folks who it does not hurt argue over this and that. In the mean time, all I can say is that we should all take a step back and learn to adapt and factor in the extra costs. Kind of like if you buy something at an auction, where there are certain buyer fees attached on top of what you paid. BAT, Barrett Jackson, etc and so forth. Just my two cents worth Bill 1
jbcollier Posted August 30 Posted August 30 I was going to write a reasoned reply but I'd rather talk about Sevens. YMMV
Xhilr8n Posted August 30 Posted August 30 It’s a tough line to walk for us to report how this new economy effects our hobby without getting into the political sandbox mrmustang mentioned. Or just plain getting frustrated even angry that it makes it more difficlt to pursue what we are trying to do with out little cars. We might need each other’s support so let’s all try to stay as clear as we can from, well you know, escalating disrespect. 2 1
jbcollier Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Just so, you know, the rules just changed and now I have to pre-pay the duties in advance to mail something to the US. It gets better, the US doesn't consider Canada Post worthy to collect their duties so I have to go through a different company just to pay the duties. Once I have proof that the duties have been paid, Canada Post will then accept it. Do I sell new things into the US? No. But I did send used parts, loan tools, etc quite frequently in the past. Not now. I'm not going to go through all the rigamarole to explain to someone who hasn't a clue why some tool I'm lending shouldn't have duties assessed. Sorry guys, I love you, but I don't love you that much... 1 1
wdb Posted August 30 Author Posted August 30 Extra cost is one thing, packages simply not being accepted for shipment is another. One I can deal with, the other I can't.
speedwagon Posted August 31 Posted August 31 Just because I understand it does not mean it is right. I also understand murder and inappropriate possession of classified documents. Right is right and wrong is wrong. I do apologize for my butt head.

jbcollier Posted September 2 Posted September 2 The duties, taxes AND tariffs have to be paid up front before Canada Post will accept a package headed to the US. 1 1
