Hurricane Irene

Croc

Recommended Posts

So am I the only one getting ready? The seven has gone inland to where it will be safe. The garage contents (tools, parts, crap, etc) was packed yesterday and will be loaded into the car on Sat as that garage was 20 foot underwater in the last hurricane in 1990 (or 91?). The rally jacks I use in minor flooding were steel wired to a concrete column yesterday (too big to take away with everything else). I was trying to buy tape for the windows but Home Despot had run out from panic buying. I did get my emergency supplies of water, batteries, ice cooler packs for beer, etc. Still not sure how I protect my window wall and green house roof of 16x12 which is 8 floors up and inaccesible without abseiling equipment? I think I just write it off as a certain insurance claim. Latest track shows a dead hit on Sunday. I was planning to ride it out at home given I am in a concrete box except for the window face, 8 floors above the Hudson River, so should be reasonably safe. The place came through Hurricane Bob before so I feel reasonably confident.

And no, none of you are in my will to inherit the seven! :p:D

Man, I'd get in my se7en and drive to Nebraska! (Or at least Ohio). You wont have elec, phones, internet, water, toilets, air condit, etc., etc, at least for a while. And when it finally sinks in that it's going to be much, much worse than you ever imagined, it will be too late to duck out. Just the sound of the screaming wind, howling away for 36 hours will be unnerving and make sleep difficult. Even if it "misses" you, it is going to be incredible.

Glad to hear your CRS has a nice warm place to hide Croc. That is a good start.

As a person who had a near miss w/a hurricane (Felix) many years ago when vacationing in Chincoteague, VA, I can say that a near-miss is still a riveting/stressful experience. You stay glued to tv/radio non-stop as it gets closer and you try to determine when/if to cut & run. And the wind never stops, its relentless & exhausting. If you are near the ocean/bay, the storm surge can be huge, we watched our dock go totally under water in a mater of a few hours. Then wondered, how high can it go? We got v lucky as Felix lost interest and backed out into the middle of the Atlantic and fizzled. Nonetheless, certainly one of my more memorable experiences. You realize you are totally helpless and completely at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Here is a link for all of you on the east coast that shows hurricane Irene and is updated every thirty minute.

Use the Atlantic Floater 2 as it gives you the coastal outline as a reference.

The IR Rainbow Image and Flash is a good one to look at along with the Water Vapor Image and Flash.

Be safe and don't wait till the storm is at you front door to seek higher ground if you live close to the ocean or one of the bays on the eastern shore.

Nature can be a real Mother. Never been in a hurricane, but was in the area of Suzuka, Japan for the F1 race in 2004 when typhoon Ma-on appeared to be on its way, and qualifying was postponed. As it turned out, the main body of that typhoon stayed out at sea, but even so, the storm was tremendous.

On the plus side, the weather on race day was glorious. I understand that with typhoons/hurricanes, it is always very pleasant weather the following day.

Funny. I was just thinking of going to NJMP tomorrow a trackday in a hurricane sounds like fun, especially in a Seven. But then I have 13 x 10 rain tires. Any one else want to join me.

Hey Mike How about you and the new Birkin?

The Seven is in the garage. The trailer is tied down. We are just waiting for the rain to start and the wind to pick up. I hope the neighbor's dead tree doesn't come down on anything. It was 11 days without power last time.

See my Birkin first impressions post. Lots of teething problems Too put it mildly-just discovered my Toyo RA1's do not fit on the front end of a Birkin, too wide and too tall.

You can have any size front tire, up to 195 X 15 x45 . My Toyo 205 15 x 50's are too big: too wide and too tall.

Dean-wow, 11 days, hard to imagine! I have a Honda generator here for such eventualities.

Mike,

Folis Jones has one of the nicest Birkins on the road. Oh yeah, and the fastest. Contact him about general Birkin fixes. He is the expert. His car has a Zetec though so might not be much help with the Duratec. He has completey redone his wireing and installled a removable scuttle for easy access to wires and fuses etc. I know he could help you alot with sorting out the Birkin crap.

leaving work in about a half hour. Luckily they have closed up shop from 3pm today till 7pm tomorrow, so i won't need to be back till Monday morning. I'll be calling on monday to find out when the adjuster will be in my neighborhood.

I'm curious if teh course of eye doesn't start running more inland than the projections over the next few hours.

Well I just got the latest weather updates and it looks like Irene has decided to glance past Manhattan and give Long Island a bit of a blow job. Actually, it looks like Irene is aiming at you Boxologist! About time you get some action! :D

I am mostly done preparing. The balcony will be cleaned off shortly - just sitting outside here enjoying the morning coffee, watching the boats stream out of the marina next door and head north up the Hudson to shelter. Garage was done last night - the Audi is now 80 feet above sea level in the garage next door. Looking over the river to Manhattan I was interested to see they took down the Freedom Tower cranes in advance of the storm. Sort of a surreal relaxed experience this morning. I have been through enough typhoon direct hits in Tokyo and Hong Kong when I lived there so I know what the game is about. I just find the waiting for it to hit the worst.

I have plenty of chilled beer and when that gets warm I have a case of red wine and a 18 year old single malt to sustain me.

Bring the bitch on!

Mike,

On second thought....why not just take the Duratec out of the Birkin and put it in the Caterham. Then you would have what Croc has :-)

Nah....mine is special...it has a dust magnet feature! :jester:

Had a great day at the track yesterday. All of us guys sort of felt like Nero Fiddling while Rome burned. We're out on the track having fun while everyone else is battening down the hatches. 4 GTR's, an Aston Martin racer, a Rolex Grand Am car, a couple of NASCAR sprint cars, A Ferrari 575 Barchetta and a Lambo Murcelalago and me. How's that for a run group.

I got my ass kicked, My arm hurts from Pointing everyone by.

Went to the market for some necessities this morning, limeade for the Margatitas, veggies to make fresh salsa and of course plenty of chips.:hurray::cheers:

We are well stocked on booze, wine and beer so you know this storm is going to be a bust.

On the shore front, found a carpenter to board up the beach front windows. Just have to hope the water level doesn't rise too much. Our end of the beach is only a 100 yards or so from the water, with just one small dune in between.

We haven't even stayed in the place since we settled on it 4 weeks ago as it's rented out thru October. Good thing my wife thought to up the flood insurance when we closed.

Phillies are scheduled to play at 1pm. No more honeydo's left, I'm going to sit down and watch the saturday morning Gearhead shows.:driving:

Stay dry.

Tom
