RST-V8 by The Adrenaline Gallery

I started a thread on British Speed as a repository for information on the RS Performance RST-V8 engine, due to the interest from the CSR build at TAG. Since not everyone is on that other forum, I thought I would share here also, so no one feels excluded. :group hug:

I know of a RST V-8 in a S3 chassis Caterham in Dubai, which I saw in person on the 2005 USA tour. That car has seen an extreme variety of environments and a lot of miles over many years now, and I have not heard of any troubles or complaints from the owner. I also have seen build photos long ago of a Caterham 21 in Michigan with a RST V-8 fitted that was pretty far along, but don't know what the hell ever became of that effort. Here is a thread w/ a few photos/videos of it from a few years back.

edit 2 -- Found a photo I snapped at Infineon Sears Point from the Brit 7 invasion in 2005 showing the V-8 7 from Dubai (blue one, front row, lower right corner of photo). In the same photo is Rahul's WCM Ultralite, but back when Frank owned it (yellow, furthest left in the photo).

Too cool. Thanks for the explanation, I hope videos with high quality audio will be avail once everything is buttoned up.

Not the best view, but you can make out the 3 intake valves here (she's a 40 valve engine).

Here is what she weighs with all ancillaries (starter, alternator, dry sump, flywheel, dual-plate clutch, belts, etc.) and including the bell housing.

 

232.4 lbs. / 105.4 kgs. Light enough for a single person to pick up themselves!

Sadly I recall from a Blatchat post that this may no longer be true. IIRC, last year he took a stone into a cam belt which made a big mess of the internals. :( Mind you that is not unique to this engine - could happen on any engine without a belt/chain guard for that matter. Just a monumentally expensive problem to fix on the RST V8. :ack:

Here are six photos of Mike Biddle's Dubai V-8 Seven, which I took in the parking garage at Vail during the Brit's' 2005 "How the West was Driven" tour. The engine was not running right at altitude, so I never did hear it at full song (it did fill the underground garage with the strong odor of unburned fuel, though).

 

I understood that Mike flew a mechanic over from UK to get the engine running right.

 

Note the ultra-wide rear wings on this Seven!

How does the Hartley V-8 compare to the RST V-8 in (1) power; (2) weight; (3) dimensions; (4) price; and (5) availability?

 

Anyone know off-hand?

 

Also, i believe there is an RST V-6 that has been developed, or is under development right now.....

Is it my imagination, or is the front track about 6-8" wider that standard issue? Clearly the rear is somewhat wider. Wld love some performance data:weight, tire size, 1/4mile.

 

Also wld love to compare (in a nice way) to the V8 Stalkers (of which I am a big fan). I wouldnt be surprised if it was 10-15% lighter for 500-700% the cost.
