Emblems and badges

Recommended Posts

I put a Lotus badge on the nose of my scratch built seven replica as an homage to the seven and to Colin Chapman. When people ask I tell them the whole story of building it and of the seven in general. . . . . . . It is a great satisfaction to blast down the road in a car that you built yourself, no apologies for the lotus badges.

:iagree: . . . . Yep.

Lotus badges adorn my son's Baby 7. None of the neighborhood kids seem to care.

I vote for the "it's your car, so put whatever you want on it" comment and I'd add that it really doesn't matter whether you bought it or built it. It's yours.

I have a slightly more personal take on this..........I build bicycle frames for a living and work very hard to promote and establish my brand. I've had a few folks ask me for stickers with my logo to put on bikes they own........bikes I didn't make. I understand this is a compliment of sorts in that they want to be associated with my brand but at the same time it can give the wrong impression. If folks look at the brand X bike with my logos on it and aren't impressed that reflects on me and all my hard work is for naught.

Combine that with the fact that there is some low level dishonestly with it all IMO. Homage sure........but it's still giving a false impression.

I have a Westfield on the way and it will get Westfield badges.....unless i put my brand name on it :)

I agree with Dave. To take it one step further, placing the Lotus badge on something like a Caterham, Brunton, WCM, Birkin, or Westfield is actually a disservice to those manufacturers. They have each put in a lot of work to design and build their version of the classic 7, so to have someone rebrand it a Lotus must be maddening.

Dave,

First of all, thanks for posting a mature, straight-forward opinion that neither belittles nor demeans others and their choice of badge. IMO, best post (debate-wise) in this thread thus far. :hurray: While I do see, understand, and absolutely do respect your point of view (as well as that of others who have expressed their yeas and nays in this thread), I'll personally have to continue to pay homage and invite umbrage.

Personally, I believe placing 'your' brand name on 'your' Westfield would be perfectly fine . . . . . as long as it isn't a name that's long and drawn out like Stradalli Salerno Shimano Ultegra or something else where the name weighs more than the nose of the car; not enough surface area for a handle like that. :D

Now, on a slightly more important note (IMHO), we'll all need to see photos of the Westfield when it arrives.

Thanks - I look forward to the Westfield getting here in a big way. I'm getting the Mega S2000 and have the engine and trans sitting here and ready to drop in place but it will be some time still before the big crate arrives..........then starts the assembly!

I agree Dave.

Cant understand how some can justify a blatant copyright infringement.

Guys (who think its fine to put the LOTUS brand name on something they built themselves ) Please look at it from the other side for a second.

You produce a product that is highly regarded and comes at a premium price. Some guy down the road makes a copy , better or worse dosnt matter , and puts your brand logo on it. NO question you are going to be PISSED! Also from another point if you make a clubman style car or "7" as you guys call them and someone replace your logo with another , again you are going to be PISSED!

Its wrong. If you want a Lotus 7 then buy a Lotus 7.

No way would i disrespect the maker of my car by trying to pass it off as a Lotus.

ps love that rant icon ...very cool
