To be honest when this car first came up for sale it caught my attention by having a 270hp zetec - a pretty rare engine spec that deserved a good look. Plus it was a nice looking color combination. At that time the seller was asking for a fair bit more that was too much for the market. Looks like the seller is adjusting down to meet the market which is a good thing for a buyer out there somewhere.

 

As S1Steve knows, I think I have done enough damage with Ebay purchases lately so it will not be me! :leaving:

Bring it in as a track car, flip the plates with yours and who would know? The only problem, you might be driving under insured depending on the value of your current Seven ;)

Quite a car. The 217 RWHP for a Zetec is very impressive: mine is reputed to make 170RWHP and I can keep up with most cars at the track. Price is realistic also(IMHO) and who knows, he sounds motivated, maybe he'd shave a few more thou off? Tires are 16 years old so have to be replaced, not sure I believe the engine's redline of10K RPM's.

Oh how I'd love to have this as my weekend car for my stay in the US. Presuming that registration in MA would have all the same issues as discussed in my earlier threads....

"Owner said he put $30K in the motor"........Really ? A Cosworth 295 HP engine is available for about $18K but the owner opted to spend $12k more for 25 HP less. Maybe I'm overlooking something here, like the $30K included the transmission, a ECU . Jon @ Caterham USA is very capable but I'd want to see the dyno sheet which is claimed to be included on the listing but I couldn't find it. At first it looks like he is selling the car then he claims he's selling it for a friend for health reasons........too much baggage here.

I saw a dyno chart at the very tail end of the dozen or so photos. It's dated 3/29/14

The eBay listing claims the 217rwhp is equal to 290hp at the crank. That's a parasitic loss of around 26% which seems a bit extreme. I’ve always used 15% as a good middle-of-the-road rule of thumb. 15% would give the engine a rating of 255hp at the crank. That would put the engine much closer to Caterhams USA's original 260hp estimate.

Got curious, so ran some numbers

 

rpm HP TQ

3450 90 137

4100 110 141

4750 130 144

5400 165 160

6050 190 165

7350 210 150

 

As rule of thumb, most 2.0L put out TQ of 150 and 1.6L put out TQ of 125. There are some motors that are outside these numbers, but they either have very high compression and run very high RPMs, or both.

Unless they are boosted. :D The 1.8 Miata engine in my Caterham dyno'd out at 301 RWHP and 265 torque. Totally stock engine with the addition of a turbo, big injectors and a Hydra Nemesis ECU.

 

I agree with the 15% difference which would put the Miata engine at 346 flywheel HP.

Hey Ron if I do that you can have my current 7 less vin but the big horses stay in my garage. Think how much fun I could have at the Powerade Centre in that beast on the 14th. Dreams.
