Expect that we will all have to upgrade to accommodate changes over time. For example, ECU. On one of my 1990s era cars, the ECU and some bits for the wiring and engine harness are no longer available and no one can service them or tune them safely any longer. Solution is to install a new ECU and engine harness to bring it up to date. Engines seem to last. People said the same thing as the crossflow faded out of production. Some upgraded to Zetecs or eventually Duratecs. Others continued on with their crossflows. Even today you can still get bits and rebuild them from specialist suppliers. Parts supply is a bit amped up as an issue. Most of the problem is because trade networks and supply chains are so messed up following COVID disrupting product needs and the consequent supply chain re-working. Shipping container shortage is a real thing that is restricting imports because of serious cost pressures - import cost rates are way up. Ports are clogged - I have a shipment of wheels that is literally stuck on a ship for 2 months now off the coast of LA. A lot of stimulus money was spent on home goods. Furniture supply from imports is taking months now. Suez was a non-event for shipping unless your shipment was on the EverGiven. Texas Ice Storm was a non-event except for attorneys. If there is money in it, someone will make it. What does concern me is the erosion of those Mom & Pop old school mechanics. These are the ones we need. They use their brains and experience to solve a problem. They know how to rebuild an engine or transmission. They struggle to hire good experienced employees. Most go to a dealer mechanic and just learn how to plug a car into a computer and wait for the computer to tell them what the car thinks is broken. The loss of this knowledge will hurt us more as our supply options dry up. Clubs like us will be more important as a knowledge base for alternative suppliers over time.

For windshield, maybe adapting a Brooklands screen set up? If you are trying to find original windscreens, look in New Zealand - they sold a lot of the Steel Brothers version of the S4 or the UK as you would expect. I bet an original windscreen is out there somewhere with a bit of searching. Spares seem to be easier to find there than in USA. I can validate that tall folks will fit an S4. A member on here 6'2" fitted with seats installed with an S4 he used to own. Figure removing seats gives you more leg room again for your need.

Foam insert: This is a controversial topic on L7C for Vauxhall and particularly Rover engines. It degrades over time and little bits of foam break off. People say bin it. People still use it. If you are dry sumping then the foam would go anyway. The traditional dry sump kits for Vauxhall were done with either Titan or Pace bits. Dry sump tank usually goes up front under the nose cone, behind the radiator or is squeezed in around the front of the footwells in the engine bay. If Titan or Pace no longer have the tanks then look at Burton Power for some generic types or Mocal. I guess the Caterham chassis plate disappeared along the line. Look for 4 rivet holes on the "shelf" in front of the firewall or on the firewall itself. Thats probably where it was. There should still be a chassis tag - try under the pedal box cover. An Arch chassis stamp starting with the letters "AM" should also exist near the base of the roll bar passenger side.

Welcome to the forum @TheKid9 Not sure you should ever ask me an opinion on whether to buy given how many cars I have. I always just say yes! While I never owned an S4, I have driven one. Comparing it to my ex-Lotus 7 S2, it was a lot stiffer in the chassis, similar to the later Caterham deDion chassis-ied cars I have owned over the years. The S2 was like a wet noodle - not much holding it together. The S4 was a bigger cockpit than the S2 so better for touring. Fiberglass body reduced the buffetting somewhat compared with the traditional se7en shape. Same accomplished handling as any se7en. Styling is an acquired taste for some. Personally I preferred the styling in a dark color as it really suited the sharp creases and folds. The Holbay engine you referred to is a Ford Crossflow, likely 1600cc. Well suited to the car with a nice exhaust bark noise when on throttle. Values of these have varied from $15K to $25K+ in fully functioning state. If you want to do this for profit then there is not a lot of margin to work with. Personally it would only make financial sense if you are a car enthusiast and do it for the enjoyment. The package is worth saving - it can be brought back quite readily. Negotiate hard as it has been around for sale for a while - it appears on Craigslist every so often. For getting some well done research on the S4, the reading list has books by Chris Rees and Dennis Ortenburger. These will be your best for some history around how it came about and why it was phased out.
