How was your last blat?

Recommended Posts

Drove my 7 to work this morning. 22-24F degrees, my WRX was an ice cube and I couldn't get the driver door open. Clear skies and most of the roads sprayed with de icer. Only 1 mile to work so it wasn't too bad, a couple layers of head gear and a thick jacket. Drove with the top off and side doors on. I need to fix my wipers, the road spray makes it hard to see thru the windshield.

Hi Jude,

Good to see the old girl is going well. Her record for lowest temp driving is 12 degrees. I had to drive it from Jersey City to Morristown NJ for a speciality emissions testing in mid-January 2011. I drove it exactly as you did - side doors but no roof. Luckily no snow and no salt/de-icer on the roads. Geez it hurt from the cold!

Stay warm!

Amazing how all that abundant cockpit heat in the summer completely disappears in the winter when you need it. My heater was capable of warming my right, not my left foot. After that it was all abt bundling up. I once did a high 20's trip (first 1/2 was before sunrise) w/my 1st Cat to a track day 160 miles away. No doors, no roof and Brooklands, for a nice breezy ride.

A couple of years ago I drove my Caterham over two high mountain passes in snow storms with the LOCO club. I had the bikini top and side curtains on and the heater kept the interior quite comfortable.

Wolf Creek pass was at 10,8XX' and a near whiteout blizzard. Slumgullion Pass is 11,5XX' and we came out of the clouds near the summit into glorious sunshine on golden aspen trees and about 3" of unplowed snow. It was a surreal experience as in spite of the blue sky and sunshine there were large snow flakes still falling.

This was done on high performance summer tires and I have no idea how I kept it on the road but there were no scary instances.

Other than the mountain passes the rest of the trip was warm and sunny and I ran with just the bikini top installed.

Jlumba81,

You are a masochist to drive your Seven in Alaska in the winter.

You're an idiot if you've driven 800 miles in the summer not realizing that the heat has been on 'max' the whole time. Gee, this is a really hot car....

Todays boat was delightful. 75 degrees up past Hot Springs to Spring Creek and back. Much of the time I had nobody in front. There were some spots where the road was damp; where the sun does not shine for three months of the year. I even spotted one of those low-slung three-wheelers that have been described on other threads.

The neighborhood is going to heck; I've seen a Maserati three times on my road.

Anybody who runs the Blue Ridge Parkway (now closed for the winter) I would like to be in touch with....

Its December 27th, its not snowing and 5F and headed down. The only time I left the house today was to walk the 60' to the shop and back. There is still a foot of snow in the yard and the county didn't plow our streets so they are a compacted mess of ice and snow.

I did look longingly at the Caterham from time to time while in the shop working on the V8 Miata.

71* here is Roanoke, Va. Managed to drive the Seven for about three solid hours through the mountains on the outskirts of Roanoke. Man, this thing is a blast. As you drive through the mountains and passes, you can tell when you get near a stream or drive through large rock formations as the temperature drops significantly. Can not wait to autocross this upcoming year.

Today I had what serves as a blat for me. I had to move the cars around to get the Seven into the space I uses as my shop. It wasn't raining so I drove it around a bit ignoring the gray skies. I took my normal route along the river and museums. Water temperature never got above 150. Shifts went well, slow smooth and positive. The engine sound was fabulous. I thought about how the steering is spot on. If it was any quicker the car would be too nervous. I did brush the brakes slightly once other than than I never used them except for stop signs. A pretty good run. I'm now ready to change the distributor. That and a bit of adjustment should give me both better idle and high end.

I did the anti-football run up in Marin this morning.

It was as low as 26F in some areas, but still great fun.

Great photos of some classic cars! Automotive technology has made amazing advancements over the 60 years represented by those cars. Styling, not so much.

What variety se7en is yours? I love the clams and Brookland set-up.

Sean,

That was a great episode!

There were probably about 100 cars over all - and none of them were anything ordinary. I have a lot more photos, but didn't want to pull this thread off on a tangent. Will try to give you a call for a blat soon.
