2009 Caterham R400

I am the 2nd owner and have had the car for three years. Previous owner was a Caterham dealer and this was his personal car. During my ownership, the car has been trouble free except for a broken throttle cable which was replaced. A spare cable is included in the sale. The car was driven on the track two or three times by the previous owner. It has only been street driven under my ownership. It’s extremely fast, visceral, and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face each time you drive it. I can honestly say this is the most fun car I have ever owned.

Car is in excellent condition with no known issues. There are some small blemishes in the paint from use, but overall presents extremely well. Ready for the next owner to enjoy.

Currently registered in New York as a 2010 specially constructed vehicle. Smog exempt for the life of the vehicle.

Full documentation including all receipts included in sale.

For CT I think it depends on how it is registered.

The PO of my first purchase of my car bought it from out of state and it was registered as a 1967 Lotus. All he had to do was have a vin check performed at a garage. When I repurchased it from Michigan I didn’t even have to do that. Probably because I had owned it previously.

For anyone that might be interested, the car is now advertised on the Hemmings website with a walk around video to help give you a better idea of the condition of the car.
Thanks for looking!

Take a look at the link below. This provides a good deal of information on registration requirements for “custom” or “homebuilt” cars such as Sevens or Cobra replicas for all fifty states. I’m no expert, but it seems most states have provisions for these cars and it’s just a matter of closely following their instructions.

In looking at the CT requirements, it seems pretty straightforward, very much like the process used in NY.

Here is some learning from my experience registering a 2009 Caterham in CT in 2016. My car was bought from a Caterham dealer who was able to title the car in DE as a 2009 ASVE. He put a Delaware temporary plate on it and that allowed me to drive it to Wethersfield for a "courtesy inspection" that will be required. Some items I would note from my experience (and from the CT DMV: https://portal.ct.gov/DMV/Inspections/Inspections/Composite-Vehicles and a copy of the CT composite rules attached):

- you will need to put the windshield on, I don't think CT will register without a windshield and wipers (see the ruled attached)

- I talked with the inspectors before I bought a car. They say they will instantly fail for harnesses so you will need road legal seatbelts. My car had three point in it as built but you may not be able to easily retrofit them to your car. In which case you may need to get a set of harnesses that are FMVSS compliant (they would have a red push button vs a cam lock)

- A catalyst will be required

- They made me wrap the exhaust system all the way to over the catalyst with header wrap even though I had the builder put a cover over the entire header system

- Back up lights are required (I was failed because I did not have them). I have a bracket that attached a light to the frame under the body. You are welcome to use it.

- They did not require or make any mention on the bumpers (I was concerned as they are a requirement in the rules)

I was able to have my car registered as a 1967 Lotus 7 replica. Essentially no property tax when you do that. Note they will not issue a title as they don't issue them for cars over a certain age.

In the end I made two trips to Wethersfield to get in registered.

@Black HoleThanks for sharing your experience with registration. In reference to the items you stated would be needed to register the car in CT, and probably most states, all are included in the sale with the exception of the seatbelts. If the harness is not permitted in a particular state, this is an easy and inexpensive retrofit with mounting points already in place. The wiring harness is already in place for the reverse light.

I have added a photo to my original post showing all these items and a few additional parts that come with the car.

Thanks again!

Miles sold this work of art to me.  I am unsure as to whether I should buy plate and tabs, or drain the fluids and mount it on my family room wall.  The volume of details, the purpose in every curve, the finish on every surface is spectacular.  With so many square feet of carbon fiber and aluminum, the car feels light as a shadow.  Everything I loved about Super Sevens is coming back in waves:  Boat-anchor brakes;  Thought-mediated steering;  Booster-rocket mid-range;  And everywhere around you, glorious scintillas of sun sun sun.  It's compact, with that wondrous factory six-speed, so I'm retraining my size 10's in the five basic foot positions of Caterham ballet.  Miles and his lovely wife De Ann were awesome, and I thank them again.  Miles was a devoted caretaker and developer of this car.  Now it's my turn!

I ordered lowered floorboards, mohair doors (doors were missing in what otherwise was a spectacularly outfitted car) and a heater, so I can enjoy the car in our crisp springs and falls.  The parts should be arriving stateside soon.  I'm going to add a sequential shift light indicator and HID headlights, and that should do it for a while.  I intend to run with the 13" wheels, rather than the supplied 15"s.

Congrats! Lovely car. Just a thought. I have a heater and Brooklands in my book built. The heater works quite well in as much as it puts out a fair amount of volume and heat. With that said, it doesn't really help a great deal at elevated speeds or highway jaunts. What I found works best- is simpler, cheaper and with less weight is a good 12v electric motorcycle jacket liner. First Gear makes a decent selection. Just a thought.

For my car I have what I call a "winter mode".

Heater helps but can't defeat the aero screen and cold ambient temps overall.

I get the windshield on, half hood and doors. Those combined with the heater are enough to make the car toasty in any weather.
