Welcome to USA7s Jeremy.  Glad to see you have met Jay in his road tripping travels.  You have a nice part of the world to live in for back roads blatting.

Yes, I believe that is "Black Hole" from this site. It was about 30 degrees when that shot was taken... and Jay had a 1.5 hour drive up from the coast to get there! Brrr!

Yes, that is me. At least it warmed up nicely. You can try my SV on for size, you won't have any trouble fitting.

New to the forum- had no idea it was here, so happy to have found it. I am a car enthusiast, and I do a bit of amateur track stuff.

Bought a kit, so started a build thread.

Brand agnostic, but a bit of an Anglophile (currently own a M3W and Ginetta too. Had a Lotus Evora, like the looks of the Emira)

Greetings all!  As a BAT neophyte I purchased the green Stalker, Ford Ecoboost several days ago.  I first saw the car after its run on Cars and Bids and while it does not quite have the classic look of the other Lotus 7 variants I thought it was a distinct "American Hot Rod" take on the basic Seven.  The components of the build are very strong and the chassis/suspension design by Scott Minehart, the builder of the Stalker kits, is very advanced.  I took a ride with Dennis Brunton years ago in one of the original V6 GM supercharged cars, was very impressed with the performance and have been following the Stalker threads off and on ever since.  Before bidding I was able to talk with the lister, Doug, and the builder about the car and they were both very open and forthcoming about the build and the features of the car.  After considering the engine (310 hp and approximately 350 ftlb) and the weight 1650ish lbs it looked like car with potential performance approaching a Caterham 620.  No sequential transmission of course but ballpark power to weight.  I've been interested in these cars for years and I've given up motorcycles after riding since I was 14 in Florida so this looked like a good place to put my bid in.  The basic raw intensity of these cars is very appealing and it should be here in Texas (out of the snow) 1962_lotus_seven_1962_lotus_seven_e8ae32db-a75e-4704-923f-96328413a5e2-JskXxk-04056-04057-scaled.thumb.jpg.b2f130a350f18b71f5832ece248a1fe3.jpgin a week or so.  I think I'll be very pleased with the purchase.  Oh yes, there is a Cobb Accessport that comes with the car.  I'll take some time to get used to the car before that gets plugged in but nothing succeeds like excess.

Hi all! 👋

Greg here from North Carolina. No Seven yet but actively looking for one right now.

Besides that, I’m an engineer at a NASCAR Cup team, absolute petrol head, own and drive a few other cool rides, had a open wheel race cars construction business in the past so I’m quite handy as well.
Thank you for having me on this forum and in this community!

Hey GregM,

I’m in Mooresville and know of a Seven that’s been sitting for years. Think it was an early 2000’s build.  Sounds like a perfect car for you !

Hey 98 SuperSprint!

Thanks for sharing and that would have been a good candidate indeed! But I just purchased the DSK Seven from Arizona and am awaiting for it to be transported here.

That said, you should post the 7 available in Mooresville in the "for sale" forum section. I am sure someone will buy it in a minute.

Hi all,

just acquired my first Seven actually my first Lotus (Caterham technically).

I had sold cars at Barber Bros. Lotus in Walnut Creek, CA in 1990 and was introduced to the brand selling new and classic cars.  Drove an assortment of Loti while there and attended a big convention held at Sears Point that year.

Fast forward to the present now living in Mooresville,NC and having owned over 60 cars and half dozen motorcycles find myself hanging out with an amazing group of car guys every week.  Well as luck would have it somebody in the group owns a Caterham and has been insisting that I drive it to validate his tinkering and getting car dialed in. I do, it is.

Weeks pass and he emails me asking if I’m interested in the car, I just respond with “seriously?” and leave it alone.

The following week I am out of town on business all week and return Friday afternoon my wife picks me up at the airport.  Usual husband wife conversation which for us includes “So what did you want to buy on Bring A Trailer this week, still looking at Super 7’s?”  Haha no I didn’t try to buy a car …

So we get home and I notice the garage door open as we turn up the driveway there’s the Caterham in the garage!

It appears that we are neighbors  and it also sounds like you moved from the West Coast to NC just like myself.

Did a job in racing triggered the move as well?

What are the details on this car? Anything wrong with it other than sitting? Any idea of price?

Yes seems high to me as well.  But... for about $65k (all in) you can get a brand new kit that doesn't run (yet), AND it'll take you about a year and a half... to get to your garage.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Not being snarky, at all, just pointing out the intricacies of NEW KIT CKD Caterham market at the moment.)

My qualifications to remark on the market: I've been waiting almost a year, happily. And the car I've specced will come in well above $65k...  But if my wife asks it's just $1,200, plus shipping. Lol.

I tend to agree, but I also don't know what exactly is wrong with it.

If you're actually happy with it's trim/year/model/size etc the whatever the premium the car might have (not even counting for this crazy market) might not be a significant premium when considering the opportunity cost of finding another one that you'd be happy with.

Step one would be to find out why it's not running and whether it ran when parked. Is the fix going to be a few hours and a few hundred dollars or weeks of work and a few thousand dollars swapping the motor out entirely?

Devil is in the details here. As a running car $35k could be well within a reasonable price estimate.

Opportunity cost is a thing. What can potentially another year or two without a 7 be worth to you? If you're not in a hurry, then you can keep hunting for a bargain. If time is of the essence a premium might not be a deterrent.

  • 2 weeks later...

I’m already enjoying my first hour in the group. Thanks for the information.
I am just getting started on a project rehabbing and completing a partial Locost 7. Many years ago I owned a series 2 Lotus Super Seven for 15 years, lightly converting it from an SCCA D/Prod racer to a daily driver Southern California street car.

I am now based in rural northeastern California, and am a bit fearful of the registration/licensing process ahead. Initially, the car will be running a 1968 crossflow and 4speed from a Cortina, with Miata front suspension and manual steering rack. The car was moderately damaged in last summer’s California Wiidfires, so re-wiring ahead, and I need to find sheet metal to reskin the rear end, and replace the rear fenders.
As I am finishing up initial treatment for recently diagnosed multiple myeloma (cancer), I’m using time to stack up some parts before my project hands-on target date of about June 20.
In reading recent posts here, seeing your vehicles listed, I was reminded that the last 7 I test drove was a 1987 Caterham 1700 Supersport (?) with a Cosworth BDR 1700, de Dion rear end and 5 speed. What a car!
I’m very much looking forward to the work ahead, and seeing what others of you are doing.
