Seb you should be able to get in. Just tell the person at the gate you are going to crocs garage 367.  Shouldn’t be an issue as there is an event on TBolt on Friday. That should be finished by then as it’s almost dark by then now.   My record is towing 17 hours straight to Birmingham Alabama.    Legs were like Jelly when I got to Barber Motorsport park

By my rough count we are at 12 drivers so far with a few more that had indicated they were planning on attending.  Like @Bball7754 😜to name one. 😎.  @JohnB to name another. An ZootNewton ??? So get your act together.  Hope you can make it.

I am looking for lodging now, holiday in express is looking real nice (aka cheapest) but doesn't seem to be very trailer friendly. Assuming we can do trailer drop offs the day before by name dropping croc and garage 367, that might be the move here. Is there a time frame where they allow drop offs or will the track/security let people on premises all evening/night? I emailed the event organizer as well to ask. I am guessing I won't get out there until 8/9pm.

After 6pm you should be fine. Before that you might need to hit up Croc.

Need a bit of advice in advance on handling. I had dialed in my car pretty well in the past, but since i've installed the -2.5 degrees rear camber ears, i find it to push a bit much at entry and middle of corner grip.  (understeer). what i read online and from various caterham racing blogs is to go softer setting on the rear ARB to allow more rear roll and transfer weight and hence grip to the front.  This is counter intuitive from normal car setup so asking for your thoughts.  Is going softer on the rear ARB the right thing to do to correct understeer?

I also expect to be hitting rev limiter in 6th gear with 25% of the straight left but that will have to wait for next season to correct as i need to change my FD ratio.

As in thinking about it, I also redid my LSD with sintered plates etc, new preload.  The effect of the refreshed LSD could be to have more understeer at mid corner especially in lower speed turns.  Considering a bit more rake or caster on front.  But let me know your thoughts.

Security is there 24 hours.  Drop offs at track are usually allowed 7pm onwards the night before.  If you are earlier then just say you are headed to Exotic garage 367 (last building on right before bridge to Thunderbolt).  Option 2 - If you arrrive at 5-6pm then just say you are joining a group at the Finish Line Pub (in the Clubhouse).  They usually let you drive in and park at the clubbhouse for dinner.

If you arrive late and gates are closed then there is a phone number to call on the gate.  Even if there is no answer, then usually it is just the security guy doing a prowl of the property and he is back in 10-15 mins.

Holiday Inn Express can handle trailers but its more you leave them on the access road out the front.  Bit messy to turn around.

Thats exactly what I do with my UK 420 - softer on rear ARB.  The logic comes from relative suspension softness between front and rear.  I find it better.

My base set up on my de Dion cars came from TFL Racing and their set up on the 420R I have is a sweet handler:

Front

Full caster on wishbone washers

Camber - For a LHD car on treaded tires you can go 3.2RHS and 3.0LHS. Full slicks will bring this down a little by -0.2 -0.1.  This allows for weight bias of driver on side to side balance.  You may want to just be 3.1 both sides initially and then dial in divergently each side as you test.

1mm toe out

Rear

2.5deg ears with shim to get 2.6 camber.   Most people do not shim but I think it is essential - particularly on an SV.

Start with no rear toe in.  Dial in after you baseline iniital spec - I bet you will end up at 0.1  as that is where I usually end up.

Ride Height

Measure ground to chassis rail and not ali skin as older chassis and race cars have exposed tubes - the newer cars have ali skin.  If you are measuring to ali skin then modify measurement accordingly.

Front - back of wishbone.  Its 120mm at back of front wishbone.  Photo shows a more recent model Caterham with ali skin.  The ruler points at measuring point.  My measurement was ground to chassis tube as not all cars are covered in ali there (e.g. older chassis and race cars) but you can deduct the right amount of ali skin cover from the 120mm.

For the rear measurement point, do it ground to chassis tube at the rear axle point - no photo handy right now.  Its not much - only +5mm rake front wheels to back wheels.

If you want higher ride height then same process to achieve right rake.

I have variations of this from Phill at TFL as he has tailored set ups for different driving styles across the 62 Caterhams he looks after.

Thanks Croc

I’m not too far away from the recommend setting but with two differences: neutral front caster vs max negative as you suggested and rather stiffer rear arb.  What front toe do you run?  Also, I assume you have the standard spring front and rear?

I bought the Garyline setup kit.  Hope to get it before departure so we can have a bit of fun tuning the car.

Do you plan to bring it with? I would love to see it in person. Have been debating on getting one myself.

I broke down and bought the gyraline system.  Haven’t tried it yet.  But I can bring it down to njmp.

Did you get their G1 or G2? Wasn’t sure if the G2 was worth it so I did get the G1.

i can’t believe there are 57 pages of motorsport regulations.  Someone actually took the time to write this down.   Impressed.

I got the g1. But since I haven’t even tried it that’s likely the smart move.

The set up specs had the toe.  1mm toe out.

The springs and shocks were standard R ones for 2018.  Never changed them as I wanted a compromise set up for tracks given it frequently rains in UK and Europe when I go out.

I have toe plates and a camber/castor bubble level that would be interesting to compare as well.

Anyone know where to get a road spec 420r radiator before Friday? Mine is leaking pretty good where they typically fail and was previously epoxied. Taking it to a local shop tomorrow but talking on the phone they didn’t seem like they had high hopes.

I bought a radtec back in May and never opened the package because the epoxy patch worked great until this past weekend. Finally opened the radtec box and womp womp, they sent me the older style radiator.

Two choices - weld or do the Caterham dealer ring around and Fedex.  One of them will have a 420 radiator on the shelf.

Hi all,

I’m really looking forward to this year’s event after missing the last one (or two?). My car’s ready. New belts and tires, plus a bonus oil change. My helmet’s still good and HANS is re-certified. The forecast looks decent, but chilly. Make sure to take a lap or two to get some heat in your tires!

I’m probably arriving Saturday am, but just maybe can pull off a Friday evening arrival for the dinner.

Croc - Is CatKong attending??

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Best,

John
