wemtd
Anyone have recommendations for an aero gas cap source? I've seen pictures from several members (if i'm not mistaken: MightyMike & Alaskossie) with nice examples. Are these Mocal caps, sourced from Caterham, or elsewhere? – It will be for my S3 Birkin. thanks paul
Alaskossie
Paul, I ordered my aero cap as an option on my Seven, and Caterham supplied it with the kit. However, I later wanted to get extra keys for the cap, so Ben at RMSC put me directly in touch with the filler cap maker in UK. Their website is: http://www.newton-equipment.com/ They have some nice stuff. When you get the cap, be sure to take a pair of pliers and remove the internal spring-loaded filler flap inside the tube, before you install the cap assembly. This may improve the rate of fill, and reduce back-pressure shut-offs. Also, be sure you orient the fixed ring that is bolted through the body panel, so that the deepest of the "scallops" around the internal rim is oriented toward the top; this will allow the filler nozzle just a little more direct route into the filler pipe. MightyMike
Paul, Ordered mine from British American Transfer. It is the Aero 300 locking cap. http://97.74.103.94/files/cap.pdf Mike
escondidoron
You might also consider this supplier, Aircraft Spruce, as an alternative. They have several models and sizes as well as finishes: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/Usher_flushCaps.php
MHKflyer52
Anyone have recommendations for an aero gas cap source? paul Speedway Motors has one that locks. powderbrake
Speedway Motors has one that locks. Here is the link http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Garage-Sale-Aircraft-Style-Filler-Neck-and-Cap,48429.html This one doesn't lock(with a key) The lever lifts up, and then you can rotate it to remove it. The silver looking thing on the top of the cap is the air vent. I have one on my Ultralite
MHKflyer52
Your are correct Jerry and you also need to purchase the filler neck. My bad in stating that it locks as I did not look at it closely when I did the search of SpeedWay's site. I live and learn all the time. Here is one that Locks and is sold by: Fuel Safe 1550 NE. Kingwood Ave. Redmond, OR. 97756 800-433-6524 P/N; AFC300B-L (Newton P/N A49L) Price is $264+ change and shipping (OUCH) Here is the link: http://www.fuelsafe.com/store/catalogsearch/result/?q=A49L&x=17&y=
MightyMike
Before you plunk down $264 for the AFC300B-L, check out the link I listed above. The same product is less expensive. I paid a total of $221.72 including shipping. Mike
Sean
Must be considerable mark-up on these, since Caterham sells theirs, which is locking, is made by Newton, and includes the cap, ring, and neck, for £108.09 (about $170 US) plus shipping. I am sure Caterham USA sell them as well. Of course, you would have "Caterham" on your gas cap, but what the hell.
Jim F.
The aero I ordered to replace the stock plastic cap that came on my Cat came from Caterham but has an engraved "7" instead of "Caterham" in the area above the opening tab......otherwise, it's identical and as I recall was about the $170 price, even though it's been installed since 6/03. BeagleGuy78
I have an Aero cap with new filler neck that I want to install ... The new neck has one large and one small pipe coming of of it (returns?) And the old neck has 3, can I cap the hose off one of the small hoses and just leave it that way? Does it matter which one I cap?
BeagleGuy78
This is the new neck This is the old one still installed
coffee break
Could the larger of the 2 tubes be an air vent for the tank?
BeagleGuy78
I'm not sure ... Perhaps they are all "vents" to prevent over pressurizing the fuel tank?
Sean
I'm not sure ... Perhaps they are all "vents" to prevent over pressurizing the fuel tank? The larger one is a vent from the fuel tank back to the fuel filler pipe. The smaller one should be routed with hose going down/up/down, and have a one-way valve in line, such that air can go in (into the fuel tank), but fuel cannot go out. I'll try to dig up more specifics...
Sean
I'll try to dig up more specifics... BeagleGuy78
More specifics: Following is a link to a PDF of Caterham Workshop Notice 371 from 2002 by Nathan Down regarding the recommended configuration of the fuel breather hose: http://superlight7.homepage.t-online.de/Caterham/notice.pdf Sean, Thanks for that info, but my main question is still unanswered ... The installed filler neck has 3 pipes, one large and 2 small ... The new filler neck only has 1 large and 1 small. What should I do with the extra hose? papak
I got mine from Aircraft Spruce: pn A26NS Newton fuel cap, $103.75. There are no additional vent tubes on the filler neck with this one. The rubber connecting hose to the tank neck can be found at fillernecksupply.com. Make sure you use fully lined hose clamps for longevity. Those are available from McMaster-Carr. aircraftspecialty.com can engrave anything you want on the cap and/or flange.
