Getting in touch with my feminine side

I joined the dark side today myself. I bought ’91 with a bunch of recent track parts including Flyin Miata stage 2.5 suspension kit with Ground Control coil over sleeves, Flyin Miata frame rail reinforcements, Hard Dog Hardcore roll bar, Sparco Sprint V seats, Goodwin Racing stainless steel exhaust, Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 wheels, hardtop, and more. I’m a big believer in learning track driving in a momentum car, since it forces you to conserve as much corner speed as possible with no luxury of covering up mistakes with the accelerator. And since I have no natural driving talent, I went for the ultimate momentum car -- this thing is slow as molasses! It’ is a blast to drive though and handles very well with the mods. It has the added benefit of making all my other cars seem considerably faster than they did yesterday :jester:

I bought mine for commuting but I am having a hard time resisting some of those parts your car has... namely the Flying Miata suspension upgrade and chassis reinforcements. But a rollbar is first on the list.

Hi John,

Sounds like you found a fun car to play with that has some mods that are good ones. The suspension setup when dialed in is one of the best and I am not a sales person for FM. Make sure on the roll-bar you get some padding if it already dose not have it to protect your head from coming into contact with it. As for speed I think you will find that your Miata is faster than you think especially in short curvy areas, yes they are not as fast as a lot of car from the start or over a long straight but on a curvy section of road or track they are fairly quick due to their ability to hold the road or at least that is what I have found with my Miata. Heck I drive it more than any of the others that I have including the 7 and my P-car. I do not think I have ever seen a Silver or Putter color 91 Miata before and I like it. Wish I had the hard top with my Miata as it dose make the car quieter and improves the stiffness and the aero of the car over the soft-top just a little.

Well have fun with your new toy and as I said I like the color a lot.

Thanks Martin. I'm really impressed with the suspension thus far. The ride is significantly better than I expected and the car handles quite well. A little too much understeer for my taste, but I can dial that out if I want by adjusting the anti roll bars (currently the front is full stiff and the rear is in the middle).

Already ordered the SFI padding for the roll bar.

I like the color too. I've noticed when driving it around, a silver Miata really attracts zero attention. Kind of a nice change of pace. Speaking of pace, I know what you mean about the car being fast on a winding road, but I was referring to the acceleration which is pretty underwhelming. It’s a nice engine that likes to rev, and the gearbox is a joy, but I’m used to cars that are significantly quicker and I already felt that all of them could use an extra dose of hp. :)

I put it on the lift last night and looked it over. There is a minor oil leak that I'll need to track down, but everything else looked great. Here's another gratuitous picture, but the only one I've taken of the car (the other photo is from the CL ad).

But Mike why would you have that travel guide from downunder unless it is for the picture of the second generation Miata (NB) or maybe I should just not ask and you should not say. Either way your still OK as far as I am concerned. :seeya:

Hey John, where did you get that lift? Steve

That is a little harsh. We really do not know for certain that the guys in the brochure picture are called John or Steve.

Maybe they are hairdressers from Santa Barbara called Serge and Rodney! :jester:

Oh and for Martin (MHKflyer52)

John, your oil leak might be coming from the cam angle sensor O ring. First generation Miatas are known for this, I replaced mine with a factory O ring and the fixed lasted a couple of weeks. I bought a O ring from my local Ace Hardware and will try it this winter. The sensor is located on the back of the head and behind the intake valve. It is used to adjust the timing and a boost to 12- 14 degrees before TDC makes a difference in the throttle response, a higher octane fuel will probably be needed if you make the change. The leak makes a mess in my driveway and also leaks onto a rubber cap sealing off an unused coolant pipe so you might want to change the plug if it has been leaked on. The Mazda part number for the cap is FEA7-13-104 . Check out http://forum.miata.net/vb/index.php for LOTS of Miata stuff, more posts there in a day then we get here in a month. The most popular way to boost HP is forced induction, new supercharger kits are long gone but turbos systems are available. I've had my 93 Miata for 12 years and enjoyed every trip in it.Good choice!

Guys,

I hope you guys will go easy on the "hairdresser's car" thing --- since I'm seriously on the lookout for a low-mileage Miata NB body style, and I have Skip Cannon on the trail.

On our way back from the USA7s Black Hills blat, Skip and I diverted to Flyin' Miata in Grand Junction, Colorado, and I drove FM's just-finished LS conversion (see photos). I did not wring the car out because we were in the residential neighborhood of FM, and it was a customer car, but I was very impressed with the balance, and the torque (in any gear, at any speed!). It is a modern Sunbeam Tiger -- with three times the grunt.

With the Miata, I'm looking for a fun all-weather summertime car, and a relaxed cruiser that my wife will enjoy being a passenger in -- the Tilletts in my Seven are too narrow for her, and the Seven is a bit of a "hair-shirt" acquired taste, as we all know.

So if my ship comes in (I'm hoping to settle a big, 8-year-old piece of litigation soon), I'll plan to have Skip and Flyin' Miata on the case....and an LS conversion in the garage before too long.

Hey John, where did you get that lift? Steve

It's a BendPak MD-6XP. Our garage only has 8' ceilings, so a full height lift is out of the question unless I decide to lose a bedroom.

Hmm, I used to live in Santa Barbara...

Breezy, thanks for the tip on the O-ring. I'll check that out when I get back into town.

There are viton O-rings available for the Miata CAS. Google "viton o rings miata" and you will find some sources. Fix it ASAP as that oil is also seeping into the bellhousing and soaking your clutch.

Usually the factory O-rings are good for 70k - 80k miles.
