Wings Aviation Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Had a new AEM ECU installed in my Turbo Superlight R400, looking forward to utilizing some of the programming options. Using a speed sensor we can set different boost levels in each gear which should help with traction. Now I'm looking for a spare gearbox to play with some ratios. Anyone else running a turbo Duratec?
JohnCh Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 That's the first turbo Duratec I've heard of on either side of the pond. Any additional details you can share about the engine? Thanks, John
blubarisax Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Yes, I need to know how to put one on mine!
Wings Aviation Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Not sure if I've posted these pictures correctly, I'm new to this and an idiot...
xcarguy Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Wings Aviation, Welcome aboard! Awesome ride. :seeya:
S1Steve Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Wings Aviation, Thanks for the pictures. That's a nice clean install. Is that Caterham built or your own build. Have you had it on the dyno yet, I would like to know the HP\ Torque #'s. I'm sure this setup has just made it to the top of Karl's( Blubarisax) wish/ Christmas list. Which is good, because then I'll beg Karl for another ride in it. Thanks for sharing and good luck with that Beast....
scannon Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Wings, Welcome aboard. That is one clean installation. Love the air/water intercooler, where are the water/air heat exchanger and the circulation pump located? How about a close up picture of the turbo and its mounting to the exhaust header?
Wings Aviation Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 150 miles away from the car for the next week so close up pics will have to wait. We dialed back the boost to 8 psi which was giving us just over 330 hp but gave us a really nice flat torque curve that was flat around 267 ft lbs coming on at about 3800 and staying flat to the high 6's. I'll post the next dyno sheet which should be the end of the week. She's having a piston change this week.... Still trying to get the Caterham tach and shift lights to talk to the AEM ECU, they don't seem to want to be friends right now. I'm probably going to make the battery to the rear, to free up a little space and smooth out the intake tube bends. The inter cooler pump is in line.
Alaskossie Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Very neat installation! Is this a Series 3 Caterham? (Looks like it). Is the Duratec a 2.0 or a 2.3? What transmission are you using?
Wings Aviation Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 2.0, Caterham 6 speed. I'd post one of the dyno sheets if I could figure out how to do it with my ipad?
Wings Aviation Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Dyno sheet, this is with the old pistons. I'm happy with these numbers and this tune, it doesn't need anymore power and it's a pretty good curve.
Off Road SHO Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Wow, that is a lot of area under that torque curve, that is what you want. Good torque down low is what rockets you out of the corners. Great job. Tom
Gherkin Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Very nice looking set-up and great performance! I have a question for you... What spark plugs and gap are you running? I have a supercharged 2.0 Duratec running 10 psi and have been trying to find the right plug/gap combination. Right now I have the factory Ford plugs gapped at .030 (I believe the factory spec is .055). With this set-up I have nearly eliminated all ignition misses but still have a slight one at about 4,500 rpm. Other plugs gave me pretty bad misses either low or high in the rpm range. The miss does move around with different plugs. OK, one more question... Have you upgraded the factory Ford coils? Thanks in advance, Chris
yellowss7 Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Yes, I need to know how to put one on mine! Do NOT let Karl in on how to do this conversion. It's hard enough right now just to keep close to him. :banghead: :smilielol5: Tom

Wings Aviation Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 I'm running a stand alone AEM ECU so we had to change out the coils to the 3 wire type, we went with a little more bank while were at it. I'll get you the plug specs and post it, just can't remember off the top of my head. I've lowered the compression slightly in an attempt to get as flat a torque curve as possible. Had a custom clutch made which has just gone in so have to be a little conservative on the boost for a couple of runs so I don't polish the top off it. Got any dyno sheets for the supercharged 2.0, I'm considering building a new Cat and would be interested in a super, I've had several supered road cars and I'm a big fan.
Gherkin Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Thanks for the response. Here is the sheet from my first tune a couple of months ago. The injectors were hitting 100% duty cycle at just over 6,000 rpm. I still need to have them flowed to determine where to go size-wise. I am also getting just about 50 psi fuel pressure so I think I need to up the size and pressure of my pump. The car drives great with a very smooth power delivery from about 2,500 rpm to my current rev limit at 6,000 rpm. I have built turbo cars in the past but this is my first supercharged toy. I do really like the smooth delivery of power but it does lack the kick in the back of a quick spooling turbo.
Wings Aviation Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Gherkin, what ECU are you running? I see some injectors in your future....
