New ECU

Wings Aviation

Recommended Posts

Had a new AEM ECU installed in my Turbo Superlight R400, looking forward to utilizing some of the programming options. Using a speed sensor we can set different boost levels in each gear which should help with traction. Now I'm looking for a spare gearbox to play with some ratios. Anyone else running a turbo Duratec?

Wings Aviation,

Thanks for the pictures. That's a nice clean install. Is that Caterham built or your

own build. Have you had it on the dyno yet, I would like to know the HP\ Torque #'s.

I'm sure this setup has just made it to the top of Karl's( Blubarisax) wish/ Christmas

list. Which is good, because then I'll beg Karl for another ride in it.

Thanks for sharing and good luck with that Beast....

Wings,

Welcome aboard. That is one clean installation. Love the air/water intercooler, where are the water/air heat exchanger and the circulation pump located?

How about a close up picture of the turbo and its mounting to the exhaust header?

150 miles away from the car for the next week so close up pics will have to wait. We dialed back the boost to 8 psi which was giving us just over 330 hp but gave us a really nice flat torque curve that was flat around 267 ft lbs coming on at about 3800 and staying flat to the high 6's. I'll post the next dyno sheet which should be the end of the week. She's having a piston change this week.... Still trying to get the Caterham tach and shift lights to talk to the AEM ECU, they don't seem to want to be friends right now. I'm probably going to make the battery to the rear, to free up a little space and smooth out the intake tube bends. The inter cooler pump is in line.

  • 2 weeks later...

Very nice looking set-up and great performance!

I have a question for you... What spark plugs and gap are you running? I have a supercharged 2.0 Duratec running 10 psi and have been trying to find the right plug/gap combination. Right now I have the factory Ford plugs gapped at .030 (I believe the factory spec is .055). With this set-up I have nearly eliminated all ignition misses but still have a slight one at about 4,500 rpm. Other plugs gave me pretty bad misses either low or high in the rpm range. The miss does move around with different plugs.

OK, one more question... Have you upgraded the factory Ford coils?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I'm running a stand alone AEM ECU so we had to change out the coils to the 3 wire type, we went with a little more bank while were at it. I'll get you the plug specs and post it, just can't remember off the top of my head. I've lowered the compression slightly in an attempt to get as flat a torque curve as possible. Had a custom clutch made which has just gone in so have to be a little conservative on the boost for a couple of runs so I don't polish the top off it. Got any dyno sheets for the supercharged 2.0, I'm considering building a new Cat and would be interested in a super, I've had several supered road cars and I'm a big fan.

Thanks for the response.

Here is the sheet from my first tune a couple of months ago. The injectors were hitting 100% duty cycle at just over 6,000 rpm. I still need to have them flowed to determine where to go size-wise. I am also getting just about 50 psi fuel pressure so I think I need to up the size and pressure of my pump. The car drives great with a very smooth power delivery from about 2,500 rpm to my current rev limit at 6,000 rpm. I have built turbo cars in the past but this is my first supercharged toy. I do really like the smooth delivery of power but it does lack the kick in the back of a quick spooling turbo.
