Klasik-69
Hello guys. Yes, Bob bought my 7 Monday night and I'm delivering it on Friday along with extra sets of wheels and other parts. It was tough deciding to sell the 7 but the reality that it needed to be used rather than stored gave me the initiative to let someone else enjoy this incredible car. I have never owned a car that was less demanding of me and gave me so much back. I'm also going to miss this community. Thank you so much for all the help, advice and friendship over the years. I was likely the only one who actually got away with going to NJMSP on his anniversary and is still married. What am I going to do now ? Not sure. I am rebuilding a couple of older cars and still collecting others (its a sickness) but I enjoy working with my hands and it takes my mind off other things. I had back fusion surgery a few years back, along with rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder so I need to be kind to my body to make it last. I'm glad Bob bought my car since I do think he will use it in the manner it was intended. I had a guy in Orlando express interest but he just wanted to flip the car for a profit. One of your new members on the forum from the Boston area was going to fly down to see the car on Saturday but when he found out how difficult it is to get this kind of car registered, he decided to forego the deal, and I don't blame him one bit. I pulled the ad last night but amazingly I got a couple of calls today on the car. I never thought CL was going to net any kind of results but the ad is free and I had nothing to lose. I was getting ready to list the car on Hemmings Classic after we get back from out little trip to England but no need to do that now. Thank you to all of you, I will miss this group. xcarguy
Klasik, I remember that car from the 2014 USA7s festival; I believe the paint was brand spanking new back then. Beautiful car and well built. Bob got a head of a deal. Still pushing for the metal flake steering wheel though. :jester:
xcarguy
Definitely get the instruction if you are going to try out HPDE. It keeps you safe and makes you a more skilled driver. Thats why Shane went 'wrong'. Or just come on up and run with the rest of the se7ens at NJMP. Just don't follow Shane. :jester: And just when was I going to play nice. Edited June 20, 2018 by xcarguy
Croc
Thats great to hear Bob. I think you are going to enjoy that Caterham very much. Congratulations on the new addition to the man cave! :cooldude:
Croc
Hi Mike - Really good to hear from you. Sorry to hear that you sold the Caterham but I know it is going to a good new home. I am rebuilding a couple of older cars and still collecting others (its a sickness) Alas, I have the same sickness, possibly worse than you given the number of restoration/refreshes I have underway (refer the footer below this post for my tales of oops). I always liked your eclectic tastes in cars. What projects do you have underway currently? Cheers mike
BlueBDA
Mike - so glad to hear that your car found a good home. I am the "new member" that Mike refers to. I have wanted a Seven since the mid-80s, and have been on this site since 2013. Mike's car checked most of the boxes for me - looked like a fantastic build, came with race wheels and tires, and I know he was a great owner. I actually booked flights to go down and look at it, and likely buy it, and then learned more about what it takes to register one of these in MA, and cancelled my flights. MA is one of the tougher states. I am still researching, and reading the laws, to figure out what my options are. I know I could register a 1996 or earlier car without needing OBD2 or emissions, and almost pulled the trigger on the 1995 white Cat on Bringatrailer yesterday, but the price got beyond what I would have paid for that one. So one of these days, when I get the laws figured out, I'll finally get my Seven.
Anaximander
Jcerier, I am sorry that MA has such stringent titleing requirements. Fortunately, we had moved further South in Florida after selling our 4 car garage home (sob). Fortunately, there is a secured air conditioned storage facility 1.3 miles from our home that had a space available for my tilt trailer and the Caterham. Like yourself, I have been wanting a Lotus /Caterham since getting talked out of buying a pristine 1962 Seven when I was a Senior in high school in 1967. I am on my third Stalker which is a superb performer with terrific support from the factory in Clearwater Florida but I still had this itch from 51 years ago to apparently scratch (grin). Thanks for indirectly helping me to get into my first Caterham. Mike G. is a great guy with a terrific sense of humor and a keen understanding of all things mechanical and I feel very fortunate to have moved an hour away from the car just two days earlier. It feels like Kismet or something? I know you will find just the right Caterham that you can get past the DMV in short order. Croc as you know provides us all with the invaluable Seven listings most Sunday mornings for those of us needing caffeine or nursing hangovers. Kitcat
Most of the cars on Croc's current listing that bill themselves Caterhams are. The RM 8 roller doesn't seem to know what it is. Most of the misrepresentation comes by cars falsely claiming to be Lotuses. I had a Birkin festooned with Lotus badges and Lotus seat belts etc. Few, if any but the above confused RM 8, falsely claim to be Caterhams. Many of us call all of the many and varied Lotus 7 clones: "se7ens". BTW, the name Caterham is pronounced K8-trum (2 syllables, not 3,e.g Cat-ter-HAM, etc). At least by the company itself. And just so you know, Stalker is pronounced "Storker":).At least by some Caterham owners who are jealous that the Stalker is faster and cheaper than their Caterhams....But I digress. xcarguy
. . . BTW, the name Caterham is pronounced K8-trum (2 syllables, not 3,e.g Cat-ter-HAM, etc). At least by the company itself . . . Unless you live in the ‘deep south’ of Arkansas. Down here, it’s pronounced Kate-er-hey-em (four syllables, with a drawl). :jester: . . . Stalker is pronounced "Storker":) . . . Bingo! But I be dayem, I just can’t figure out for the life of me how to pronounce the word on the badge on the front of my Storker. I think it says ‘Lowe-tuss’. :ack:
panamericano
"They shouldn’t be allowed to call them Caterhams" Good thing you're talking about Cobras. I always thought a Cobra replica should have to attach the word Replica every time. I only know one thing that could get Shelby cussing quicker than a replica being called a Cobra. Croc
Just so I’m clear, many of these cars called ‘caterham’ aren’t actually caterhams, correct? They shouldn’t be allowed to call them caterhams.. I am confused. Those in the for sale list that I describe just above the link to the original ad as Caterham are in fact Caterham, whether it be owner-built kit or dealer built kit. Those that are not Caterham are described with the appropriate labels - Westfield, Stalker, replica, etc. It’s ok having the various Seven brands plus Lotus on this one forum as the originators of this forum saw its purpose as being Inclusive of all sevens - originals and replicas. Can you give me an example in that list of something called a Caterham that is not a Caterham in your mind? As for the CSR I think you need to price what a new one is to evaluate the relative price. Given how much Caterham prices have dropped over the last two years (at least in the US) I think you may be surprised what a brand new one may cost plus be customized to your exact spec. Then again there is a lengthy wait list for a new kit build so the CSR offers immediate gratification if you want something now. The CSR is a remarkable car with its IRS. It will out handle a regular de dion Caterham and is incredibly quick point to point. It feels like a big car to drive because of the suspension sophistication. I love mine. It is very tricky on the limit with the 15 inch wheels on it but if you are doing a lot of track work then I believe it needs the modifications to take a 13 inch wheel. I have never driven the CSR200 (I have a 275) but I have driven enough Caterham’s over the years to think it would be a perfect touring package.
