Jaeggernaut
i guess what i always assumed is a 'caterham' is a car bought from caterham and that it was of a very specific body type. a lot of those cars have ill-proportions and strange specific parts (compared to what i know as a car from caterham). .. but still learning.. looked at the list again. it actually makes sense. i guess the ones with no '7' in the grill confused me. xcarguy
i guess the ones with no '7' in the grill confused me. Jae..., For the most part, yes, the majority of Caterhams have a 7 in the grill, but not all do. Below are a few examples of Caterhams with/without a 7 in the grill. To add to the confusion, there are many non-Caterhams sporting 7 grills; for example, the one photo below with two cars side-by-side is of two Stalkers with 7 grills. Vovchandr
NEW Miata Locost project https://albany.craigslist.org/cto/d/miata-based-locost-project/6629870515.html I see you caught my post! I have joined the Caterham ranks and will no longer be needing my Locost project. I happen to stumble across a listing you missed (which could be a good thing) in SoCal and ended up purchasing it. Won't make it to NJ with it. Car is still shipping and NY registration will take a little bit of time.

panamericano
Croc, ... NEW ... Miata Locost project... If someone can have that project done in a week, they must work on one of those fantasy TV shows. You know, where they buy a hunk of junk and turn it into a show stopper for the big auction. About a year of work in one week.

lucky dawg
Caterham CSR https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars...ationFlag=true you guys think this is a fare price? anything is should be asking or looking out for? note: that is in canadian dollars. approx 50k in usd. First off, the info shows this as a 200hp CSR, with the performance figures of the Superlight CSR260. If comparing prices to other CSRs, make sure you are consistent. Maybe more importantly, the CSR Registry http://csr.informe.com/forum/csr-register-first-evaluation-results-for-the-public-dt543.html does not show that any 200s were sold in Canada, though totals could have been too few to make the list. Kitcat
Hard to put a price on something that comes up for sale so rarely. If you compare it to a standard S3, the price(in U.S. $) is still a bit rich. But it is not a S3, it is a more advanced design. And I think they have stopped making them, so they will remain rare. The power is down a bit from the standard U.S. versions, but is still very strong. I find it pretty compelling at that price but await Croc’s thoughts. Croc
Lucky Dawg - The list does say 19 countries and then only show the top 7 countries, so Canada could easily fall into the lower count countries. CSR_200 (total 19 countries ) 1. FRA 47 2. UK 39 3. CH 31 4. GER 22 5. JAP 12 6. BEL 10 7. IT 8 For valuation keep in mind the price in the Canadian market is seemingly more than the US market - higher price to start with. The 2008 build cost for that CSR200 in Canada was 25% more than my CSR275 2 years later once you subtract the engine cost to compare like with like. The FX movement does not explain that difference during that time so I assume base cost was higher in Canada? Bit of a puzzle but was probably import taxes or quoting list versus true discounted cost paid. - limited supply of Caterhams in the Canadian market - so a buyer has to pay over the equivalent US model - and you cannot move them from US to Canada thanks to the respective country auto import frameworks A CSR200 is still a quick car (although using the CSR260 performance numbers to sell it is not brilliant - very nice catch Lucky Dawg!). 200-220hp is getting around the max (my view) for a very quick road car yet remains a good amount of hp for any track day. Its the wider S5 chassis. Its well spec'ed. 2008 is not that old and 11000 miles is reasonable. Condition seems pretty good. There is a rarity factor as it is a CSR. I could see the equivalent car going for $43-45k in the US, maybe more if it had an accommodating title year/make. US$48k for the same car in Canada is close enough I can rationalize it especially with the instant gratification factor. Terry (the seller) knows his market and he will be reading this. If the buyer has doubts then don't buy and wait for the next to come along. it just may take years... This might make the case for buying a new kit and assembling - new car, perfect spec, possibly cheaper in relative terms, etc. De dion chassis cars are out to 3rd quarter 2019 production slots by recent accounts. The CSR is still being made in limited quantities for the Swiss and Australian markets because of some legacy sales agreements and certification needs. You will not see it for sale on the Caterham website though. Edited July 3, 2018 by Croc
lucky dawg
Super 7 Cars http://www.super7cars.com describes themselves as the manufacturer of all Caterhams for Canada. Their site (with a 2009 copyright date) only shows the 260 version of the CSR. However, not inconceivable that a 200 could make it into the country. Jaeggernaut
thanks guys. very helpful. i spotted the performance numbers too. but just shrugged it off. it'a 11000kms. so about 6800miles. even though i would've loved to put one of these together myself with my son and in my personally chosen spec (ie.260) i agree about the instant gratification comment. i'm not getting younger and who knows if i ever would've ever put in the effort to make that happen. i've already committed so this is just a sounding board to calm my ocd mind. thanks all. Kitcat
Buy it, drive it, enjoy it, and when time comes to sell it it will still be a rare Cat and much of the depreciation hit has occurred. So you won’t get hit like sellers of, say new Evoras or Alfa 4C’s. I think I suffered a $30K depreciating loss when I sold my ‘08 BMW M3(:. Jaeggernaut
thanks everyone. originally i thought i was going to get it painted to the current blue but the seller is telling me that due to the relative rarity of this car that i shouldn't paint it anything that isn't true to the car's specific vintage/year which may be important when/if the time comes to sell. anybody have thoughts on that? http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=14280&stc=
JohnCh
That's good advice for a highly collectable car or one that is sure to obtain such status down the road. For a Caterham? That seems like wishful thinking. IMHO you are a long, long way from a CSR200 becoming the kind of car that is purchased to sit in someone's garage as a historically significant object or piece of static art where things like production-year correct paint is an important valuation factor and point of personal pride. Color popularity and paint quality are far more likely to impact the price when you resell, so I'd steer clear of something like hot pink or any other polarizing color that will limit the pool of buyers or drive down the price to allow for a repaint. The current factory blue on a car that is still being produced (albeit in limited markets as Croc notes) doesn't seem particularly risky. Create the car you want and then drive the snot out of it. That's where the beauty of a Caterham (or other se7en variants) shines through. BTW since the car is together and drivable, I'd delay painting the car until you've spent some time with it. There may be other things you prefer to change and the current finish may actually grow on you. -John
Jaeggernaut
great advice john. agree with all your points. i think i've decided to keep as it is and then decide if i want to paint it later on. just for comparison sake, here what it would look like in it's current state (not actual car. and the rear fenders would be the bare aluminum) and the blue i was thinking of painting it. http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=14281&stc=1http://www.usa7s.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=14282&stc=
