:iagree: That's what I found when I was taking the tranny out of my car. All four were loose enough to be easily turned with a wrench. I've got fresh bolts and locknuts to go in during reassembly.

Is there something that caused you to look for run out? Vibration or steering wheel wobble?

They also had a Caterham 7 listed a few years ago I was thinking about. It also did not have air filters. I was also wondering how much damage was done by that.

It will be interesting to what see what the FIA do. What changes in requirements will come out of this unfortunate set of circumstances. I worked corners for 20 years with the SCCA and there have been many changes in how races are managed with respect to safety. I hope for the best for Jules and his family in this difficult time.

What are the pro's and con's of using these gasket sealers? I'm doing the oil pan and using the rubber end seals and thinking about taking a look at the cam chain. So the water pump would also come off.

I'm sure it's from a broken piston. I understand the motor was rebuilt before it was sold here http://www.classiccarsltd.com/modules/auto/detail.php?id=388 This page was longer at one time and indicated the motor was rebuild. I'm guessing the piece I found wasn't found when the motor was repaired. I don't recall seeing any jagged edges on any piston, but I'll take a closer look. The chunk looks to have been pounded around some by the smother surfaces.

While I have the motor out I am refreshing some gaskets. I have the oil pan off and found some interesting marks.

They look like old coach class airline seats.

It's good to hear you go ALL OUT in everything you do :devil: , I had to have a surgeon work on my foot to take me out of action. Save some ice from the beer cooler for the foot.

I've been thinking about getting driving shoes also. I've found some online. If there're not for regulated competition, you don't need fire resistant ones. At the Atlanta British Car Fayre I asked a guy about his Puma shoes. He said you needed to order a size larger than you usually wear.

That's the big question, how do you find someone capable to fix a Caterham?

New motor mounts are in the mail from UK and a box of items arrived from Pegasus (clutch disk & alignment tool, oil pan & exhaust gaskets and crankshaft scraper) Delivered the tranny to a guy that only works on British cars. He was working on a A-H 3000 tranny when I stopped by. I'll find out in a few days what he finds out. When we were taking the driveshaft loose, we noticed all the bolts were not tight. They would turn if you didn't restrain the nut. I'm going to replace them, they are .375-24 x 1.00. Are they grade 5 or 8?

If you have been unplugging and replugging connections, you may have cleaned up some corrosion build-up. Checking for poor ground also. FWIW

I'm thinking about removing the heater from my car. I have an intake manifold gasket that blanks the water passage. I can plug the port on the waterpump to complete the black off. My question is, how do I refill the coolant and not get air pockets in the cylinder head? :bigear:

Yes, it has been baked. I'm looking for two mounts to freshen it up.

I've seen guys use spray GUMOUT to look for vacuum leaks, but this problem doesn't sound like it is. :svengo:

I can't account for the 5600 miles that were on it when I got it. It was advertised in CA. in 2007 with 2700 miles. In the info on the car it indicated the motor had been freshly rebuilt. The guy I bought it from replaced the rear A arm rubber bushings. He said they should be replaced regularly. They tend to get beat up by dumping 1st gear. That may explain the messed up clutch disk. :smash:

whotoo, Good info, good pointers. It help with my engine/tranny extrication. An item to add (remove)... I removed the radiator just incase the hoist got too close.

A hot rodder friend of mine help me pull the engine and tranny out today. I've found a few more parts to replace. A engine mount failed, but I'm not surprised. It's 16 years old. A whole back someone posted info on engine mounts on Amazon, URO Parts C18556. The internal thread is 1/2-20 UNF. Since both are the same age, so I'm looking for two. The other is the clutch disk. The chassis only has 7400 miles on it, but some of the friction material is fracturing.
