I have a Smiths mechanical tachometer running off the camshaft. It required modification to the front cover and to the camshaft retaining nut. This in turn requires modifying the rocker cover because the original crankcase vent is lost. It's pretty cool in a luddite sort of way, but a Stack chronometric would have done the same thing tapping off the coil signal.

My suggestion would be to post your problem on the MG forum (LINK). Those folks deal with SUs all the time.

Bart, Take a look at these from Holden (link) if you are looking for the Lucas type switches.

In addition to the earlier posts, I would recommend that you try the MG Experience's Spridget website (link). You probably have, but make sure that both carbs have oil in their dashpots. I normally use 20W-50 in mine.

The A-Series gearbox has, as the previous posts state, an unsynchronized straight-cut first gear. It also uses engine oil for lubrication. Most use the same oil that they put into the engine while some prefer a nondetergent 30wt.

I have a very early pre-lit Westfield with the Sprite/Midget running gear. I am 6’ and around 190# and I fit well into the drivers seat. My car uses the front suspension uprights, hubs and brakes, steering rack, engine, gearbox, prop shaft, and rear axle assembly. The mechanical parts are available since they come from a car with a suspension and running gear that was mostly unchanged for a dozen or more years. Engine parts are readily available and other than a lawnmower it couldn’t be simpler to work on. I would recommend the Midget section of mgexp.com for information and resources on the running gear. The only drawback is the transmission’s lack of synchros on the first gear — selecting it should only be done while stopped. However, the A-Series is a long-stroke engine and produces enough torque at the lower end of the rev range that is really isn’t a problem. Just be aware of it the first time you drive the car.

Maybe I can have mine back together by November or December. It would be a shame to miss something this close to home.

I truly didn't know they existed. Every A-series ribcase I've used have only had syncros for gears 2 through 4.

The nuts are available from Moss (link). I believe in your case it would be part #5 in their illustration.

Contact Hap Waldrop at Acme Speed Shop (864-370-3000). He's a great source of information. Just give him a phone call. (I'm not sure of piston height, but I think the 998 piston should work with an overbore.)

If the rotation doesn't work, then get out the drill.

Thanks for the replies. My next decision will be to whether or not drill into the scuttle.

My car currently has a traditional Seven windshield (about 12” from the base to the top of the frame). The car also has side curtains. I am thinking about fitting a pair of Brooklands wind screens to the car. My question to those of you that have, or have had, Brooklands on your car is basically, how are they working out?

It may be a good idea to remove the windshield, its supports, and the wipers.

I don't have the exact answer, but I've seen it on numerous formula cars over the years. These folks (link) have the type of upper a-arm you are talking about, but for a Spitfire. They sell the upper ball joint as a separate item.
