  1. My understanding of 2" vs 3" is the amount of give (deceleration) they have during a crash. Depending on the G loading more give may or may not be beneficial. More give = more stretch for a give impact/loading = longer deceleration which is good. Contacting something hard due to more stretch or having additional contortion of your body is bad.
  2. Going back further in time I have DB9/ Bentley convertible envy. Not very Se7en like but man cannot live by Se7en alone.
  3. Engine oil & brake fluid before every track day, once a year if no track days. Twice would be better. Transmission, differential, coolant every couple of years.

    Folis Jones

We first met him while he was working on his airplane. We were drawn to the Lotus photographs in the hanger. He packed a lot into his life. RIP
  5. I'm going to look for parts. I hope to book a hotel this weekend.
  6. Get well soon.
  7. The nose and wings make it look more Lotus VI than Seven like to my eyes. All Se7ens are cool.
  8. The dragon and surrounding area is pretty cool place for Se7ens. I could see going there again. Barber is a pretty cool place because of the track and museum. Coordinating with a LOG would make things easier than going it alone. Sharing the drives, auto-x and track would cut costs.
  9. Which is lighter?
  10. The other trick is to fill it with race gas prior to the last drive of the year. No alcohol and is much more stable.
  11. Like sevenup I enjoy Wheeler Dealer and have learned a few things from it over the years. Their Elan, Exprit and Morgan episodes are definitely worth watching. Their Aston Martin episode gave me an idea of what ownership might be like. Ed described removing and replacing the dash of the Esprit as the most difficult thing he had ever done.
  12. I like to tape my bonnet latches. I use clear box tape.
  13. That would be fun in just about any car. Very special in a Se7en.
  14. A nice design. I especially like that the spelled out SEVEN. Thanks.
  15. That is an appealing car. A bit of polish, some red interior trim...
  16. Needs a flappy paddle gearbox with auto mode. Actually given the distances that some of you folks drive a few creature comforts isn't too bad an idea. It is one thing to attack the twisties for an hour. Quite another to do 8 hours on the highway.
  17. I'm starting to see 70's dune buggies being restored and brought to car shows. Fun looking cars with the openness of a Se7en.
  18. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
  19. Today I had what serves as a blat for me. I had to move the cars around to get the Seven into the space I uses as my shop. It wasn't raining so I drove it around a bit ignoring the gray skies. I took my normal route along the river and museums. Water temperature never got above 150. Shifts went well, slow smooth and positive. The engine sound was fabulous. I thought about how the steering is spot on. If it was any quicker the car would be too nervous. I did brush the brakes slightly once other than than I never used them except for stop signs. A pretty good run. I'm now ready to change the distributor. That and a bit of adjustment should give me both better idle and high end.
  20. The Westfield XI is going to be much more like a series 1 Lotus Seven than any Caterham, especially one built in the last 20 years. With a period engine (BMC 948 - 1272, Ford 1172 flat head, Ford non-cross flow or Climax if you want an engine that is worth more than the rest of the car) it will be 1100 lbs and rocking 50-90 HP. Its better aerodynamics will let it reach 100 mph and run the quarter mile in about 20 seconds. Skinny tires will give less grip than an MGB. If Westfield hasn't corrected the problems of clubman XI's (straight axle) or series 1 Sevens it will: - Have a significantly better turning circle to the left than the right - Grind the rear U-joint against the frame on hard turns in at least on direction - Have an exceedingly narrow footwell & tiny pedals - Have scary drum brakes Since many of the parts are interchangeable with a Lotus XI there it is unlikely all the idiosyncrasies were addressed. On the other hand it will break away gently and lurid slides will be easily recoverable. If you want style and classic driving get the XI. If you want performance go for a modern Se7en. I admit that I have never driven an XI. I do have significant time in a series 1 Seven.
  21. Study drunk, test drunk.
  22. There is a plier like tool that helps get the cap off. Cheaper to buy extra caps.
  23. Excellent looking S4. It would be a perfect "screw you" concourse car.
