The confusion over Kesgrave is that it is a town in the UK. Holbay was named for the business' original location in HOLlesley BAY on the UK south coast. Later they were reported to have moved the business just up the road to Martlesham Heath in Suffolk on the UK south coast. Kesgrave is the village right next door - not sure why it appears on the build plate as Holbay I understood were located at the former WW2 airport in Martlesham Heath. I have no idea what the '3000' on the data plate is supposed to represent. The same engine build plate also appeared on later run Lotus Ford Cortina engine installations. I rebuilt a Holbay Lotus Ford Cortina engine a very long time ago. Its amazing how much trivia/drivel I can retain from that when I cannot remember what I am supposed to do 10 minutes from now!

The Lotus 7 S2 in the Hemmings ad is essentially replicating a very special run of (thought to be) 13 Lotus 7 S3s in 1970 with a 1600cc Ford Crossflow engine with a special Holbay head and internals. It has been referred to as a 'Holbay S' engine. 120hp which was excellent for the period. The Kesgrave 3000 reference is just part of the standard engine build plate labelling of post-65 Holbay engines. You will see that cam cover engine build plate appearance on a lot of Holbay engines that went into Lotus cars. Correct original finish of the rocker cover would have been black crackle with the raised ridging and lettering polished metal - no colors. The Hemmings ad talks about it being built to a 3000 but thats misleading - it is still a 1600cc. Hexagon had a genuine Lotus 7 S3 Holbay S for sale not that long ago - ad here LOTUS SUPER 7 S3 HOLBAY S | Hexagon, Classic and Modern Cars (hexagonclassics.com) Any prospective purchaser should verify the block and head casting numbers as being correct. There are not a lot of photos to work with but you should be able to positively identify via the casting numbers whether a standard crossflow head or the Holbay worked head is on the car. Block looks like a standard Ford 105E block which is correct, hopefully with the upgraded internals. You can buy those rocker covers on Ebay for not much money but it would be genuinely be special if it still had the Holbay special cylinder head - that would justify the price premium. Otherwise you just have a regular crossflow with a fancy rocker cover. Still a very attractive and well presented Lotus 7 for sale. As an aside, Holbay was formed by John Read and his older brother Roger Dunnell (2 of 9 siblings). Paul Dunnell is Roger's son and continues in the business of building engines for race cars and se7en type vehicles today in the UK - Dunnell Engineering. Quite a few Birkins in the USA received Dunnell Zetec and Duratec engines. I believe he has the ability to verify Holbay engines if needed.

Be careful for using Pegasus for this part. The photo shows a 5 inch tall Spa post. It actually arrives 2 inches high which is ok if thats what you want. I had to return it as it was the same low height I already had. Pegasus did not have the taller post available. Spa would not sell the part separately. Their website makes you buy the whole mirror kit. I ended up at aerostraight.com like @papak

@wxywb021254 you are correct. The Simpson Hybrid works correctly without needing modification. I have one.

Look for a quality alignment or race workshop and ask them to also corner weight the car at the same time. Someone who works on setting up open wheeler race cars (e.g. Formula Ford) will know their stuff.

I have a car at Ace Performance currently for a new ECU and tune as they are one of the few in the country familiar with YB Cosworths. They also know their Caterhams having retuned a few MBE ECUs before. Dont know anyone else in the area sorry.

Yes it is a well known problem with Caterham and Hans. I have seen people live with it but not sure I like that idea. Two options to address: 1) Move belt mounting locations to fit Hans. 2) Using a Tillet seat where the shoulder belts pass through the holes tightens up how the belts can move across the shoulder such that you do not need to change the belt mounting holes.

I bought one of those for the new Cat - they look a great piece of kit based on the video demonstrations. I have always preferred to mount my fire extinguisher on the passenger side footwell, gearbox tunnel side. That way I can unbuckle, single handedly grab it then exit car ready to act. Also, it is hidden when parked as the tonneau would be over it. I would suggest you try a few places where you practice grabbing it in a hurry.

With a car cover like that, at speed it will flap about and may mark the paint. You might be better just using that cover to protect the cockpit area/keep it dry and leave the rest of the body to fend for itself - I expect it would be fine with out a cover. Love the name Eggsy!

You were right to flag this as a concern. A low profile sump on an engine which was designed for a transverse installation not fore/aft installation like you have. I am inferring from your post but a low profile sump does not sound like the standard one - a later add on? Oil pressure sensor is probably mounted at the back of the engine closest to driver? I would be looking at a Raceline baffled sump or dry sump. Maybe compare what sump you have on the car now to the Raceline website and see if you can make a positive ID - it was a fairly common mod in these cars. The problem with low pressure on a gauge is that it is a guide and not perfect. There could be moments of the oil pick up in the sump running dry in which case low oil pressure under braking is the least of your worries as damage is being caused already. Relative locations of oil pick up in sump and oil pressure sender are worth evaluating here as similar could existing under hard acceleration.

SBD normally sell locked ECUs, unless you specifically buy the unlocked version. @yellowss7did a remote mapping session with SBD. Found a local dyno with broadband connection at a suitably early hour of day to accommodate the UK. Then while the car was on the dyno doing runs, Steve at SBD played with the map to tune it remotely. Did not need a local engine tuning specialist at all. Quite an efficient process with great results. Good luck on finding weber tuning specialists - they are a hard find. I have too many of the damn things running around. Just be thankful you only have 2 to tune...

Following on from @coffee break after his items, I would definitely check you have a fuel pump that is priming. Like all electrical connections, the vibrations in our cars tend to eventually impact the fuel pump as well. ECU should be fairly safe - its rare they go but the wiring connections within the MFRU wiring plugs are known to deteriorate over the years. Also if your car has the FIA battery cut off switch and/or the Caterham black rubber roll over safety cut off button switch then these should also be checked for wiring connections coming loose and electrical current not passing through them. FIA switches usually have about a 10 year life.

For reference, with the DOT 3 point belts in a Caterham , the shoulder anchorage was installed at the base of the roll bar on the chassis. Photo below - ignore the race harness, the DOT belt is the one right next to the roll bar base and tonneau. This may be high enough for a shoulder as that rear firewall part of the Caterham chassis frame is high enough relative to shoulder height once seated. If that positioning is ruled out in your car because it is not high enough, then back to your question of drilling the tube, I have always seen the hole sleeved with a metal spacer with the bolt running through the inside of the spacer so that it takes the compression weight rather than the hollow roll bar tube.

Virtually the same Bill. The dropped floor is at its max drop where the seat is then tapers back up to regular height as it moves forward. Photo should illustrate shape. At most there is a 1/8 to 1/4 inch extra vertical height at pedal location but not extra width. In practice it never made any difference to pedal box room in Caterhams I have driven with my feet. In the S3, pedal box width is critical with wide feet. I am 11.5 EE and I always manage to get two pedals at once in an S3. Although at size 10.5 you should be able to manage a standard S3 pedal box as that is the foot length cut off point, the size EEE makes me think an SV chassis is more likely in your future. I strongly suggest a "try it on for size" session with a comparable car near you. The dropped floor works best for those tall in body folks who need to get head below windscreen.
