  1. what is the obsession with HP, apart from the Tim the Toolman grunts?
  2. Are you really re-locating your family to another state because you have no faith in the education system in Maryland ? Are both the public and private school choices there that bad? Are you going to use the public education system in Carolina? When you chose to home school were you at all worried about the lack of peers..I know it is a safe and secure environment and all at home, but do you not think that there are more advantages to a child being taught by an education professional in a class of kids of the same age ? PS I was thinking, was your home-school decision arrived at because of one particular issue like bullying, etc or more a dissatisfaction with it all? Do you teach the same stuff as state, does it not affect your work schedule? With regard to your comment " Everybody has some cause that gets them worked up." I agree, but as I said it is for the most when it affects the ideals of the individual and not what is always for the common good.
  3. Maybe you should let the Texas Tourist Board know about that for use as a slogan.I think the only time I might ask for the use of a gun was if I had to spend my life in TX.
  4. But you know what, bleating about these issues or each persons answers to problems on an obscure forum like this never are not going to change anything, we are lazy and self serving.Having to go out and march or act on a cause is hard work; getting older and being able to rant on a keypad in the comfort of your own home is not that tough, of course we can get active if a policy affects us or our family personally.I am sure that if you 6 year old was killed by a loon with an assault rifle then your view may well change view gun laws. For example with being lazy, like I am... I used to fight every speeding ticket , reason being most of them were speed traps where the roads were straight and clear and with little chance of risk to others, it was OK to drive faster than the posted limit; yet these were always the places that the police( at the bottom of the hill) chose to set up traps, this was the place that most of us would determine what a safe and reasonable speed is drive at, yet this was the place we get hammered. It has nothing to do with "Protect and Serve" but all about $$$$$ as a source of revenue. The dangerous spots where accidents did happen were rarely policed. As I say I used to, won about half, then got lazy and just paid up.But if enough of us complained then it might just work for any issue, be it health care or education or police priorities. As far as I can see most of us do not give a shit unless it affects us personally; back in 1995 I was in Fort Myers, Florida having just built a new house along with many others on my cul de sac, we all got our first tax bill at the same time and talked about it at a July 4th BBQ, the elders were pissed off at having to pay $$$$ on education for "someone else's kids" yet had no problem with a bond for a new jail. It is all about " I am alright Jack". I believe that every person has the right to healthcare and education,if they are hurt or unable to work then we help them.
  5. but children are children wherever they live and there are models in use around the world that work, and work so much better that the one in the US.Whether or not anyone chooses to use these systems is another question. I fail to see what relevance the population size had to do with anything?
  6. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/people-places/Why-Are-Finlands-Schools-Successful.html http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2019676789_finland14m.html http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/13/education/from-finland-an-intriguing-school-reform-model.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/12/what-americans-keep-ignoring-about-finlands-school-success/250564/
  7. So if education is the core problem what do you think is the answer ? Do you think it might be a good idea to look at the many nations that do better ? How about Finland for example, and many of the others that lead the U S & A?...oh, shit, sorry, I forgot... they are socialist education systems. But regardless of communist / socialist or whatever the basic for growth has to be through well taught kids whatever your politics, and sadly the US is at the back of the field now.I feel if it were not for the massive amount of wealth this country has amassed over the last 100 years and the military might that overwhelms the others even if they grouped, ( wow, wotifthat woz spent on health and education ? ).. ahh fuck it, nothing is going to change here.
  8. KK...with regards to your comments on "sucking", (on which I believe you may well be an expert)' if that theory is correct, are you then advised to drive like a loon until the fuel tank is empty? You sure someone that did not like you wasn't pulling your plonker? But getting back to Werthie, sorry to see that, but is the car not insured, was this on the track or road?
  9. just a guess.
  10. Talk about drawn out, either list the car or do not.
  11. that we are not allowed to make a choice, I am sure many of us would opt to pay more for an item of a better grade not made in certain countries. One of the saddest things to me is that the old well established names many of us grew up are now built down to a quality equal to an unknown name for Taiwan; for example. I have some tools made in Birmingham, England in the 1920,s that were passed on to me and they are built to a standard that I believe has now vanished, these are the tools that I first pick up because they are just so well made and feel great with a quality of steel that is always there.I wonder how many tools I could buy now to pass on and expect my grandson to be using with admiration 90 years from now?
  12. Minimalist here.... I removed both the carpets and the floor; I rigged a couple of ankle support straps off the steering column and now get no hassle with the carpets or the floor, less weight and a cooler drive, but watch out for puddles and potholes more now.
  13. We all love a "stiff fairy" ! But, they have been "known to move when getting in or out".
  14. There is a podiatrist surgeon in Nogales, Mexico that specializes in foot size reduction at a very reasonable price I hear, maybe we could "club" together and get a group rate reduction? Thank God, that as we age, our feet do not increase in size at the same rate as waist bands and ear/nose hair . Oh, and am I the only one whose toenails have taken on a life of their own after the age of 50? I never, ever, took notice of them really; holes in socks or tight new shoes were signals for trim time, which was a simple procedure; but now it is a cross between rose pruning and valve grinding, that added to the fact that they are becoming more difficult to reach by the year . After I wrote this I recalled that great clip in "The Worlds Fastest Indian" when old Bert uses his grinding wheel to clip his nails to the amazement of his neighbors son.
  15. Yup, Prices seem to be at an all time low... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DeDion-LWB-chassis-/160980985654?_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&forcev4exp=true#ht_43651wt_1163
  16. How much is it and where is the auction?
  17. you have a point ! Oh I had to post this again, now with the behind scenes bit. and then the making of... and the golden oldies... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dzi_8Rscfs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QI71Oy1SbA and now to bed..
  18. Ha.
  19. I was visiting today with an old dear friend of my mums from Finland, in her eighties, who had experienced so much, but also really knew so much and recalled it all, then on through her work as a medical scientist, racing cars, canoeing, art, weaving...and on and on and on. Anyways, I am not on a religious rant but I am sure that many here have met older people , ( I am 57), that really know so much, who have such great skills and experiences, only to be snuffed out after taking years to learn said skills.(of course some of us do not learn much, me myself included, but when I talk to the older and wise I feel so humbled and sad that their skills are gone. It just seems so sad that an intelligent and skilled life would be zeroed. I guess this is getting a bit "Python" with what is the "meaning of life"? Sorry, I know off topic, but it struck me today more than usual.
