scannon Posted June 6, 2016 Share Posted June 6, 2016 (edited) A friend who already has one of the 2005 Ford GTs decided he wanted one of the upcoming new ones. Here's a newspaper article on the selection process Ford has put in place. There are already 5,000 applications for the planned 2 year batch of a total of 500 cars. He said he just got word that 500 applicants so far have been eliminated but he is still in the running. And here are the two videos he and his son produced to submit along with their application. A change in the music will tell you when the 1st one ends and the 2nd one starts. This is his current Ford GT at today's Colorado Concours. mrmustang Posted June 6, 2016 Share Posted June 6, 2016 Having driven the several of the 2005/2006 and several 60's originals at speed on various tracks, and having had the pleasure of driving both on the street at various touring events, personally, I'd rather have the 2005, or a 60's version over the new one (only able to sit in a pre-production car as of today). Call it a personal preference, but I prefer the cleaner body style of both the previous versions and do not believe I need to "audition" to own a new one just so I can say "yet, it's mine" so I can have my ego stroked...... Personal preference aside, what can they do when a run of 500 cars generates interest from 5,000+ potential buyers? I don't think it's just an ego thing. I can see how being chosen as a buyer would be a bragging point for those who end up with one, but I don't see it as the driving force behind the "audition" process (maybe not the best term to use?). How can it be narrowed down to 500 in the best possible way? I like the fact that they're trying to weed out the speculative buyers just looking for a quick buck by asking for proof that the car will be driven as intended. I remember the story of Ferrari doing this with the F50, where owners were forced to lease the vehicle for the first two years, and at servicing intervals, driving history would be downloaded from the ECU. If the car wasn't being driven as intended, the contract gave Ferrari the right to terminate the lease. Or so the story went, anyway. Not that it's something I'll have to be concerned with, but I think I could find a way to be happy with any of the Ford GT/GT40 variants in my garage. edit -- Hey Skip, best of luck to your friends with getting one! I've never had it on track, but have done car shows, parades, promotions at our www.eddiehillsfuncycles.com dealership, and drives to church on pretty Sundays. http://imgtree.net/files/dfd7qatonemqlsj27q82.jpg I submitted an application- (they did not ask if you have the funds to buy one, and I don't) but the numbers of applicants vs. the number of cars to be produced for the US market, make the odds for "approval- or allocation" pretty slim, I think. But the Heritage that I do have, has been my best investment for the last 9 years. I'm gonna be 83 years old in less than two weeks, and I had to sell almost all of my lifetime collection of what I have always considered really cool toys. Sold all of my Ariel Atoms (sold twenty nine of them altogether before I retired as a dealer for them), sold both my 540 inch big block Chevy-powered boats, and also sold my beloved Ultima CanAm roadster. But I'm very happy and grateful for the new Ford. Thanks for all the friendliness and conversation I have enjoyed here at this forum to date, and I'm not leaving- just don't check in here all that often. I have taken a deposit on the Heritage and the buyer requested taking it in the sun for photos. As a thank you for the Heritage purchase, I'm giving him right of first refusal to buy the 2019 if, and when, I should offer it for sale. I never thought this country boy hot rodder would ever have even one of a car like this, let alone two.
