Getting My 7 Tomorrow!

Thanks! I'm going to see the inspection guy on Tuesday and get things rolling. I'm hoping maybe I can entice him to come to my place and do it here. I don't know... I don't have a trailer so this could be a giant pain in the butt! Or I may have to buy a trailer. We'll see....

Lucky,

See if your state has a paper tag for temporary use. For example, in Texas, I got a 30 day temp tag for $25 (actually many times). Beats a rush job on a trailer, and takes the pressure off the INSPECTION/registration process. Used the frame number, insurance, and no inspection required. Most states also have a "trip tag" for unregistered vehicles, but you would fudge a bit, since you're not going anywhere one way, but it may give you something to laminate and hang on the car going to inspection, etc.

I've done some research on the penndot website. It appears that I'm able to drive it to an inspection station with no sticker, or an expired sticker. However, it's supposed to be registered.... how can it be registered without an initial inspection.... very weird. I'm just going to drive it there. I live out in the woods, sometimes I don't see a trooper for weeks. My wife will follow me, I have insurance and I'll take a copy of the pub from PennDot. Plus all my paperwork. I don't think it will be an issue. They are pretty decent around here.

Well, I'm finished, over the weekend I finally figured out the jigsaw puzzle of carpet pieces.. LOL Everything glued in place, cover over the fuel filler neck and the washer bottle is mounted. Instead of putting it on the cheese wedge cover for the fuel filler, I went up to my wife's sewing room and snagged some Velcro and mounted it to the carpet on the side of the boot, between the cheese wedge and the boot wall. Trunk is small enough without having that bottle sticking out.

I put about 6 miles on it so far ramming it up and down the road I live on. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a blast! It is so cool to see the cycle wings and suspension working!

I finally found a pair of shoes that work... damn, that peddle box is tight! First couple trips it was very awkward, hitting the brake and gas at the same time... wow. Little weird, I may wind up buying some racing shoes, we'll see.

I ran the build clock up to about 92 hours, not too bad considering some of the "redo's" that I ran into thanks to the build guide.

As I've said before it's been a great experience. My wife loves it and has been super supportive through the entire build. She's the one that told me to buy one. She's a keeper for sure!

You don't need racing shoes, you can save yourself some money by going to your local sporting goods store and buying "wrestling" shoes. they're thin-soled, very narrow, and much less expensive.

I second these. Got them at a nearby Puma Outlet store for less than $50 last spring.

Thanks guys! I'll check it out!

I'm only a size nine regular width.

Those look great btw!

I see some comments that they run small. Any suggestions? I was smiling when I saw this because my hockey skates are the opposite. I wear a size 9 shoe but in hockey skate sizes, I wear a size 7-1/2 ! If I wore a nine I'd be skating on my ankles LOL.

Small feet/small build is to my advantage for one of the first times in my life with this car.

I wear and use regular shoes without an issue. I think work/dress shoes were the only concern so far. (size ~8)

Not contributing to the discussion, just humble brag about "short comings" :smilielol5:

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, I finally got my car "Enhanced Inspected" on Saturday. Everything is in PennDot's hands now.

Hopefully it'll be 2-3 weeks and I'll have my plate and title.

It will be registered as a 2018 with a "Specially Constructed" Title.

It will be awesome to take it down the road and start cruisin'.

I downloaded the alignment spec's, so my first blat will be down to the alignment shop and have it checked out.

Can't wait!

I'd love to try that sometimes Tom. Unfortunately, I'm going on vacation that week. I know, poor planning on my part...

What is the requirement for roll cages? My 7 only has the standard cage on it. I never really intended on taking the car.

Roll bar has to clear your helmet, The broomstick test is to sit in the car with helmet on and take a broomstick or other straight edge and lay it on the roll bar at one end and the bonnet at the other, as long as it doesn't hit your helmet you are good. Windscreen would fold in a rollover obviously so that's why you don't measure to that.

Croc or someone will confirm or correct as appropriate.

Tom's right - roll bar with a straight line to the front nose chassis member as that is the first structural piece of the chassis that would be on the ground if you rolled it. Its about two thirds of the way down a Caterham nose cone as you progress from front to back.

  • 1 month later...

Well... Time for an update. After a very frustrating month and a half, I finally got my plate, title and registration. I was denied the first time around because of "no license plate frame" Really? Perhaps if I had a plate I would put it in a frame! Also they circled the exhaust pipe in between the muffler and the cat, along with our super cool exhaust headers that feed into the collector on the cat. They said that they need to be "shielded" WTF.

Soooo of to Lowes to get some 6" aluminum corrugated ducting and this is what I came up with.

As for the license plate frame, I borrowed the one off my wife's MINI Cooper.

I had my local State Representative involved at this point and he sent it in. This past Friday, 10 days later, I got all my gear!

Come Saturday morning, with much joy I ripped all that crap off the exhaust, mounted my plate and went to get the car inspected again...

No problem this time around and I'm off for a Blat! I put around 50 miles on it Saturday and Sunday.

I'm headed over to one of my customers to get the front end alignment checked per spec. There isn't any issue with the handling at all but I want to be sure so I don't wind up scrubbing the tires off in case I screwed something up! LOL

Happy Motoring!

Good think you removed the "shield". Makes your car look like one of Jay Leno's Aero or Tank powered monsters. You would be a hit with the kids that put a 5 inch chrome tip on their Hondas.

Congratulations! Well done! Patience well kept in the face of bureaucrats with the intellectual capacity of amoebic dysentery.

ironically the license plate frame would earn you a fine in NJ as the Welsh flag would obscure the “NEW JERSEY” on the base of the state license plate here.

ugh. Makes me glad to live in TN.

When I went to the DMV with my title, they ASKED ME if the title matched the VIN plate, and then I paid the $32 registration fee for a classic car, which is good in perpetuity.

Technically not supposed to drive except weekends, club events, and maintenance, but I had a cop drive up to me from behind and give me the thumbs up as he went by.
