Summit Point Track Day 420R

This is from the Chin track day at Summit Point in WV last weekend, it's a lot faster than I expected and a real tire shredder, session was cut short by a bashed up but ok miata on turn 1.

If anyone knows this track well let me know if my lines were ok?

That was a fun ride-along. I don't know the track so can't comment on your lines. But I think you need a wing:)! So many fast cars in your group with huge wings. Always a sign of great manliness.

I saw you had a top speed of 127 mph, which is pretty fast for one of these little mobile barn doors. Never heard a Caterham described as a tire shredder, what tire were you running? I like your track set up (cage, shifter light, Aim Solo, great video with car/track metrics).

Thanks! It's a perfect track for a Seven. The tires I had on were Avon ZZRs, 13/6 front 13/8 rear. They are really great tires for street legal, though they tend to overheat and get greasy after half a dozen laps or so, I guess unsurprisingly so. I have a set of Hoosier slicks that I haven't broken out yet, same dimensions. The tire shredding was from the other cars - the grill, my helmet and cockpit was covered in it, the ZZRs vulcanized but did not shred, I guess the car is just not heavy enough to do that.

The only concern I have right now is the steering column clamp, which seems to loosen up during the weekends. The design of the clamp doesn't seem to be great to me, it's a lot of torque on a tiny radius with a small clamping surface area. And that's with the camber set to a moderate level (2-2-2 on the washers).

Great video. Love running with Chin. Will you be running with Chin at Barber in late October?

Unfortunately not, I'll be racing Champcar Road America Oct 24th, then Chin Daytona October 31st. Lots of catching up to do :)

You were having fun there. Cannot comment on your lines as I have not driven that track myself. Always been uneasy when I look at all the trees along the sides of the circuit. Is the deer problem bad there?

I was surprised at your top end speed for a 420R, which tells me the track is a power circuit but you were holding your own nicely.

They warned about turtles and ground hogs, no deer, but after watching yellowss7’s video I’m surprised they didn’t mention it lol.

Ground hogs are fine, they keep to themselves. I have a bunch out the front of my NJMP garage on the outer edge of the Jersey Devil corner. The turtles are not good though. Hard to keep traction in the corners.

A deer would add substantial volume to the underwear, so to speak.

Summit Point is well known for deer. I've seen them on the inside of the track but fortunately never on it. There's a video somewhere of one running across the main straight and jumping over a car that was coming down it. No damage to either one! I was there 2 weekends ago and it looks like the new owners have put up a deer fence around the perimeter so hopefully no more. Plenty of groundhogs. Not pretty when you're going down the chute into turn 5 in a formula car with a groundhog standing on the edge of the track at the apex. Stayed there for 3-4 laps and then gone. Flaggers never saw it. Critters at VIR as well. Had the pleasure of following someone up the beginning of the climbing esses who ran over a groundhog. Fortunately - I was in a closed car. Found the hose when came back into the paddock.

This ones right around where the groundhog I was talking about was sitting.

Check this one out. Down the front straight. Make sure you haven't just eaten. Realize- he's the guy in back of the car that hit it. That's aint dirt on his windsheild!!
