Yarwood claimed the 1700cc engine made 145hp but it was really more like 120hp on a good day.  My engine put down a touch under 100hp at the rear wheels on dynojet.  They may not be ballistic, but they are a fun engine with great sonics.

That was just a brief run to about 85mph.  I need to record the Caterham doing something similar.  As impressive as the acceleration is with the built 2.0L in the Westfield, the 2.4L in the Caterham is in another league.  It's amazing what another 30hp and 8% shorter gearing can do.

Hey guys, just joined.

 

Greetings from the PNW, West of Portland specifically. 

 

I am building a Haynes Roadster in my garage. I actually started with a pile of tubing, built a McSorley 442E, didn't like it, cut it up, then built a Haynes Roadster with those pieces. Planning on using a 2.3 Duratec, NC Miata 5-speed, NB Miata diff, steering rack, and knuckles/brakes on all 4 corners. 

 

So far, it's just the frame, but I hope to have a roller by spring.

Welcome @ianrobb!  That looks like a fun project.  No pressure, but it would be great to see a build thread so we can all follow along.  Most of the build threads here include a lot of complaints about the manufacturer either failing to ship parts or screwing up aspects of the factory's portion of the assembly.  Having a thread where the builder only has themselves to blame for almost everything would be a welcome change :D

I would love to, though, I am pretty terrible at documenting progress of any of my projects. I will try to keep at it.

Don't worry, it won't be graded :D  A build thread can be really helpful resource when troubleshooting in the future.  You also get people who become invested in the build and are happy to jump in to provide advice when desired.

I thought we grade on a Curve, so all builders get an A.

Would those be Mikuni?

Keihin I think, and i believe theyre all fuel injected. Mikuni's were older generation japanese bikes.

My friend has a Birkin.  It came to him with a Zetec engine.  Some time back he sold off the Webers and replaced them with Mikuni injection throttle bodies "for a Japanese motorcycle" and adaptors, controlled with Megasquirt.  Now he is building his Birkin into an all-electric car.  He sold me all the gasoline equipment:  Engine, 5-speed, fuel tank, fuel pumps, radiator, the works.  Just about all of it is still in the loft over his machine shop.

I've been terrorizing the streets of Leesburg, Va. with my Westfield.  Everywhere I go and stop, I get peppered with questions about the car.  It's fun, most people if not all really like it.  I've put over 400 miles on it so far and it's always taken me somewhere and gotten me home, so that's a definite positive, however, the carbs are in desperate need of a good tuning, re-synching, etc. Even so, the 1.7L Ford Xflow seems to be a good engine.  The car is not blindingly fast, but it is quick and makes a hellish sound when on full song. All in all, a fun drive and yes, I DO fit!

 

So I took my Westy to a "tuner" to have the oil changed and the 2 Weber's tuned up.  It sat in his shop for over a week and nothing had been done.  I grew a little frustrated and took it home.  My local mechanic will change the oil and I've decided to give the Weber's a go.  I'm an engineer and have spent some time under the hoods of various transportation devices and generally have had good luck with my hands.  I bought a couple of Weber rebuild kits (the real stuff, not the Chinese clone parts) and will be pulling the carbs off, cleaning, inspecting, reassembling, tuning, etc.  Wish me luck.

 

Failing with the Weber rebuilds is certainly possible, so should that unhappy occasion result, I will then go with ITBs.  That is another story.

I had throttle-shaft leaks on the SU carbs on a 1275 Spridget.  I finally got it running well but could not get it to idle below 1500 RPM.

After watching the Drive video, I am reminded of the jolt I get at an autocross when I let the clutch out on a full-power 1-2 shift, even with my 135-HP 1700 pushrod. The 185-50-15 Yoko 052 tires really stick and the car would snap my head back if i didn't wear a kart-racing collar (I have 2 bad disks in my neck).

Hello all, I've just joined.  I live in the PNW, Olympic Penninsula, WA.  I've had a long standing desire to build a Seven that will use my 2.3l OHC Ford engine.  It was from my 1984 Mustang SVO, which sadly no longer exists.  I have the engine and T5 trans combo and would like to get started on a build.  I wondered of any folks here have experience using that combo and what kind of feelings there are for the result? Any particular kit that would handle that combo? - Thanks - Jim
