If you are in the market for a Caterham in Canada I bet he could hook you up with something https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/red-deer/caterham-sv-hayabusa/1413694224?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true Deman SR7 https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/oshawa-durham-region/lotus-deman-sr7-hayabusa/1396718417?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true Locost body moulds https://www.kijiji.ca/v-auto-body-parts/vancouver/lotus-locost-7-body-moulds/1410400216?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true For those in Canada, given you (lucky) residents have a 15 year import limitation then a Japan used seven import may just work given how depreciation curves work over time provided you dont mind RHD. People forget that Birkin's biggest export market is Japan. Caterham is pretty big in Japan after Europe - certainly sell more than in the USA. There are 2 sites in Engrish: http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/ and https://www.tradecarview.com/ Follow the instructions. Fly and inspect if needed. RoRo for cheap shipping. Offload in Vancouver. Very popular with a bunch of dealers who have worked out the profit potential. Inquiries can be emailed in English - clearly you have to since the ads are somewhat lacking key data. For example: Here is a Birkin Crossflow http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/BIRKIN/BIRKIN_SEVEN/700903047530180405001/index.html A Caterham with Vauxhall twin cam http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/CATERHAM/CATERHAM_OTHER/700101056530181003001/index.html A Caterham BDR http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/CATERHAM/SUPER_SEVEN/700973104830180731001/index.html Caterham rotary https://www.tradecarview.com/used_car/caterham/caterham+others/23750159/?isNew=1 If US buyers like crossflows then there is plenty of range available - more than offerred in the US. Canadian 7
Yes the 15 year import rule is great - problem now is that most insurance companies will not insure RHD cars now. I have a Japanese import Autozam AZ-1 that I have had for years and is grandfathered with Hagerty. I don’t dare let the insurance lapse and try and insure it again. My Westfield that I had was converted to LHD by the previous owner who imported it to make insuring it easier. And lastly, that hood on the Silver Jubilee is something only a Mother could love! Ron. mrmustang
Having owned a few RHD imports over the years, I'd say this one http://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/BIRKIN/BIRKIN_SEVEN/700903047530180405001/index.html at roughly $18,000 USD+ the sub $2,000 RO/RO shipping is not a bad deal. Insurance wise, as long as you have an existing policy and a good track (no pun intended) record, I've yet to have an issue with getting insurance for a RHD import. TNcoupe
What do you guys know about that SV with the Hyabusa engine in it? Good choice for track days and hill climbs or no?
Kitcat
I know nothing about the Hyabusa SV, but the spec listed sounds perfect for a track day car. Not sure you can import it to USA from Canada tho. Maybe if it will be only used on the track? Price seems very high as well, especially if it is in US $ and not Canadian. For that money you can get a new U.S. legal Caterham or Birkin of nearly equal spec. Some of the representations seem suspect ($6K for carbon fiber wings???). It is described as having an "aqua-sump". Maybe it doubles as a boat:)? More likely, the poster meant it has an Accu-sump, which is a nice track-day feature as it maintains oil pressure, in high G corners and in hard braking, etc.
Croc
Plenty of questions about that one myself. The car was originally put together in Canada by David Savill Peck who had a production run of these Caterham kits. I saw a sister car and thought it was well executed and put together. So that creates a question - how did they get it from Canada into the US legally? Jackson Miss is a loooong way south. Does not meet the 25 year rule. I guess they must have shipped the car in separate pieces - the chassis roller and the engine/trans? Probably kit import paperwork that will need reviewing. Not sure if that loads a problem for the future. One to think about. I recall the Hayabusa having around 180hp in some guises but this is advertized at 256hp which is impressive. A lighter drive train than a regular car based drive train would make it even more impressive. Weight is 1100 pounds compared with a Duratec SV version at 1250-1300 pounds. Brilliant for track work. May be too peaky for the road? Bike engined cars are more fragile by nature as the engine is more highly strung, the transmission is off the bike and is now lugging around a heavier load than a normal bike frame. Mechnaical sympathy and a well considered refresh cycle will probably mean you never have any issues. I know people with Radicals with the same drive train and they have strict refresh cycles. No issues if that is kept to. Ad is very honest and upfront about this. Not all bike engined cars have reverse since the transmission does not have it. This says it has a reversing box - I would want to understand this. The rear end ratio is the highest I have seen in a Caterham - gearing/speeds/ratios would be interesting to understand. The ad says condition is "needs work" but does not say what. Clearly this has an impact on value. Its been for sale for an awfully long time - have to wonder why? A 2007 SV with SVT zetec or early Duratec would be around 29-34k area depending on condition. Needs work SVs drop into the high 20s. A premium for this may be justified given performance potential? No discussion on titling or registration - I infer it is solely a track car. I wonder if it was imported as a track car? 5 year re-export requirement on those. The ad does not really address the usual concern points - this is a car you have to see before you seriously consider any purchase. TNcoupe
Pretty sure it says its titled as a street car and I found an obscure youtube video from 9 years ago of this car being driven on the street in MS. The price he posted includes an aluminum trailer to haul it on if I read it correctly. KITCAT...where are you seeing NEW Caterhams of equal performance for the same price range?? Kitcat
TNcoupe: Good question! Its basically based on my (failing) memory of Caterham prices coming down to earth recently. I dont find the online info about ordering a new Caterham (Or Birkin) very helpful. Maybe Croc can comment?
