That Lotus 6 for sale is the one I saw at the British Motor Museum in November last year.  The article on that trip is in the articles section.  Photos of the Lotus 6 I took at the time:

You can buy them from Caterham. They are made for Caterham by Oxted Trimming. Oxted has a direct retail business called Thundersport. I bought the doors through Thundersport.

I use the doors almost the time. I live in So UT, where it’s very warm. The Cerakote coating on the exhaust system cools the cockpit enough to make that possible.

Anyone have any experience or tips they can share about buying a car on Facebook Marketplace, particularly when it's not close enough to go see the car in person on a single-day trip?

The amount of info and pictures on a Facebook listing is substantially less than you'd get on a BaT/CnB type listing, and I'm not sure what a seller's tolerance would be for lots of detailed questions.  Wondering if it would be better to just take it on a leap of faith, especially since the asking price of the car I'm looking at is significantly cheaper than most other Sevens I've been interested in.

Also curious how the actual exchange of funds would go down if you're paying a shipper to collect the car.  Would you wire the seller money once you have confirmation from the shipper that they're looking at the car?  Or would that be too slow to be worth the seller's and shipper's time?  Maybe it would be easier to rent a trailer and go pick it up myself?  It's about 8 hours from me.

barbox, I would have preferred to buy a seven privately. However, going through an established company like BaT takes a lot of the worry out of it. You know they have vetted the seller and done some leg work to verify what is being presented for sale is as advertised. Still, it is not a perfect system as seen over the last year with auctions being pulled and cars being resold.

Having said that, buying sight unseen off the internet in my mind has to be the one way of purchasing most fraught with dangers and undesirable types. It’s more likely to end in tears for the buyer.

If someone is honest and truly wants to sell an item then they should be willing to answer any and all questions. They should bend over backwards to help potential buyers make a decision. If they are not quick to reply, do not return phone calls, send you photos that are out of focus or not of what you specifically asked about then run, RUN AWAY!

The best thing is to find someone who lives near the item who has some knowledge about the subject and is willing to go an act as your eyes. Best thing for this is a cell phone camera and a good long distance phone plan! I can call anywhere in North America and send/receive up to 120GB’s of data at no charge. If it’s in southern Ontario I’d gladly go look it over for you.

When I bought my car remotely off a craigslist ad I was was fortunate enough to have a usa7s member, who lived near the car, volunteer to check it out for me.  I realize you don't want to risk someone here sniping the car out from under you but if you let folks know the appropriate location you may find someone who can help.  That or maybe have the owner take it to a repair shop or reputable used car lot in the area to have it inspected?

I like suggestions made by The Dreamer above.  There is a lot of fraud on Facebook and Craigslist and Ebay.

I have done all types of purchases over the years.  Flown to see cars and sealed the deal.  Bought internationally sight unseen.  Survived Bringatrailer and many other in person auctions.  Been absolutely annihilated after two bottles of red wine (thanks to some unsavory bad influencing members of USA7s!) and won on Ebay only to find out what I did when I see the email the next afternoon, bleary eyed and hung over. So I have tried it all.

There is a map of USA7s members if you look at the top menu - anyone there available to see the car for you?

You can pay for inspection services that are local to check the car for you.  People do that all the time on BAT so a quick google will be your friend for this.

Pull the Carfax to see if there is a lien.  If there is then you know you need to get good assurances on how the money will settle.

I have used escrow.com to do car transactions.  Money released once conditions met - i.e. car picked up or title given to someone you trust.
