frizille
Hi all - just got my 7 delivered this week. Was expecting a British racing green / yellow Roadsport... opened the box to find a red and white CSR. Looks like someone goofed at Caterham; this chassis ends in 85 and mine ends in 65. Anyone happen to end up with mine? I'll trade ya pictures if you did... Edited August 19, 2014 by frizille
scannon
That must have been quite the surprise. Was the car ordered through Superformance or Caterham USA in Denver?

frizille
Caterham USA; was ordered last August before the distribution swap. The weird part is the nose cone and fenders were the right color. You'd think someone would have been like 'hey, this doesn't match...' before it made it out of the factory. And yeah, was a little WTF moment- especially because there were 20 people who came over to watch this thing get unwrapped. Total buzzkill. rikker
Wow, you waited a year for the car? most of my relationships didn't last that long. I assume you have been in contact with Caterham already over the screw up.. Edited August 17, 2014 by rikker
Croc
Wow - that is a pretty spectacular type of Caterham UK factory screw up! Mind you I am not entirely surprised based on past history. Here is hoping you sort this out without much angst or mess.
randychase
The quirks of ordering cars from Caterham are legendary. But this is beyond that. I was at the unboxing of Frizille's car and it was a stunning moment to say the least. The crate was properly numbered. The bits stuck in the car (seats, wings, nosecone) were all properly numbered. And the car itself was numbered with the other number. A small mistake but with far greater impact. We hope to get this sorted out. To be clear the error happened in the crating, and I think I have been told that Caterham UK contracts with a separate crating/shipping company and that is where the error happened. Jon in Denver does not open crates and has no part of the blame. The other unfortunate thing to see, once the crate was opened, was a rather noticeable dent in the bonnet. That had to have happened before crating. So now the goal is to find out if the correct roller is in a crate in the USA (most likely) and how to swap the crates. randychase
Looks like it is all being sorted out. Red car is enroute to New Jersey and Jon is arranging a shipping swap. Should only be a small delay to the build. Whew....
BruceBe
...I think I have been told that Caterham UK contracts with a separate crating/shipping company... Caterham UK does not contract with the crating company. That is the responsibility of the exporter (Caterham USA, Superformance, etc). It's unfortunate that the mix-up could not be caught sooner, before the crates were sent on trucks all over the country. In this case, a portable screw gun and about 10-minutes would have pre-empted a big WTF moment and additional expense. -Bruce
Sean
Glad you were able to get it corrected so quickly. You might want to remove the specific serial number of your car from your post? edit -- and the other guy's S/N as well.

Yes, poorly worded. My intent was to show it was not the importer or Caterham that made the error, but the crating company.

Edited, although you'll have to educate me on why the numbers are secret, wasn't aware of that before. As for the cars, not a huge deal. Was still a great party! wemtd
On the bright side you'll get to have to un-crating parties! I don't think anyone will dispute that owning (and building) a se7en is an adventure, and rarely straightforward. cheers
randychase
Those are build numbers, not the VINs. I also do not know why they would be something to be concerned about other's knowing.

BruceBe
I can't speak for Superformance, but these kits/rollers are brought over in batches, in a container. Presumably, there are additional expenses associated with offloading the kits from containers, inspecting and verifying what was ordered vs delivered (to avoid the problem that started this thread), and then storing/flooring the inventory until it is shipped out to a buyer. We just received our latest CSR kit (see our other thread in the for sale section for details - still available!), and it takes time and resource to simply coordinate with the shipping company, offload the crates, inspect for damage, etc. Best, -Bruce
jlumba81
$500 isn't bad. I've purchased a replacement hood for a car before that costed $250 and was charged $250 for shipping and handling. So $500 for a whole car isn't bad.
BruceBe
That destination/prep fee is not for shipping the kit/roller to your door (or an installer/dealer's door). Shipping terms are FOB Irvine, CA. In other words, the buyer separately arranges for shipping from Irvine, CA, to the final destination. This is how it has always worked, and is very similar to what you'll find when purchasing a new car. -Bruce
