Here are the weights of Caterham's Track Day Roll Bar and Track Day Rollcage measured during a recent swap: 18.2 lb / 8.3 kg for the Roll Bar 26.6 lb / 12.1 kb for the Rollcage Difference between the two is 8.4 lb or 3.8 kg. The swap was straightforward but difficult as the cage's mount points didn't align well with the chassis, and the carbon fiber sill protectors must be shortened or replaced. If there is interest I'll be happy to elaborate, but my advice is only do this if you truly feel you need the cage. I'm selling the dedicated track car so felt replacing the roll bar with a cage made sense for me, but it wasn't long in the process before I was thinking about just keeping the track car.

I'll take any excuse I can get to link to the definitive article about the Caterham's exploits at the Nurburgring 24 Hours. I'm surprised the special edition didn't have red wings, considering the red rollbar seems to be a tribute... https://www.autosport.com/general/news/when-caterham-enjoyed-its-finest-hour-in-improbable-surroundings/10341200/

My one last (for now) thing to add is when I imagined that I'd be filling gas up at home more often, I splurged on one of these. A gas can that you don't need to tip to control the flow. So luxurious! (I've used it precisely once) https://www.surecanusa.com/product-page/5-gallon-gasoline-surecan

Could you guys recommend a data logging air speed / flow sensor that is small and self contained that can be placed directly in front of a 7 coolant radiator to measure airflow rates at speed? Data logging because I will probably send it to a volunteer to record the data. So why not just hold a meter out the window of my own car? I suspect the airflow inside a 7 nose is not as linear as direct outside air. I wish to establish a baseline airflow to simulate in my garage for tuning. I also suspect nose cone airflow to be surprisingly deficient requiring additional baffling for effective cooling. As Lotus already accounted for on the S2s with the standard radiator air dam. I don't know why Cat didn't continue the practice. Anyway, I don't have time to shop for this myself. Help!

Thanks Scott. It's amazing to find that a number of car owners have asked this question on the web and there seems to be no conclusive answer. Even Ai suggests on older (vintage) cars, valve stem seals are not necessary, but it doesn't mention bronze guides. "I took a drive the other day, and parked the car to take a stroll. Came back to my car and a note on the windshield said "Parking Fine". It's great when someone congratulates you on your driving abilities".

JWX, Sure, I would take them to your choice of shipper after the funds are cleared. As an example, but within the US a few years back, delivered cycle fende.sr to a shipper picked by the seller and paid for completely by the seller. Don't know anything about shipping from San Diego to Canada. I have them advertised for $500 for the pair, see advert in this forum. Also have many styles of bonnet clips if you might be interested. Ha! I think I’ll wait a bit and decide if like the solid yellow first… in the interim, installed CaterLEDs for the 3rd brake light and also 3D printed some mirror mounts for the Spa mirrors. I think both look great!

Need to report that this new mirror is quite good. Sharp image, remarkably reduced vibrations, and I like the blue tint. That stock mirror might work for a golf cart but guys there is a better way.

One question I have is, how do we know the valves get the required amount of splash? Is oil splash distributed among the valved equally? I have read the shoulders of bronze valve guides will prevent oil flow to the stem. If this is true, I would not use seals with valve guides. One thing I have read is the use of roller rockers will abate valve stem/ guide wear. Without roller rockers, I would err on the side of allowing more oil to the stems. Perhaps guides without seals is the best combination?

40 mile blat on the Blue Ridge Parkway this evening. Not a great pic as the sun had just set on this side of the mountain. Sure felt good to be out. Temp perfect, a touch cool once I got over 2500 ft. Approaching that 500 mile when we can open up the revs.

are there enough petrol station for a 7?

Without having read most of the previous, my solution to the filling issues is to forgo the 90˚ elbow and instal a vertical pipe, much like the S1/2 type. This will allow me to hold the fuel nozzle above preventing shut-off and give me visual confirmation of the fuel level and prevent wetting myself with everyone watching. Easily done in a non emission vehicle.

I think I have found the trick to filling gasoline/petrol (hereafter "gas") into a Seven. It's not very useful on a cross-country trip, but if you are planning to drive your seven close to home (or close to your trailer), this could be the answer. The problems are: You can't tell how much gas is in the tank. The gas-station hose keeps shutting off, and you don't know which shutoff is the real one, so you get gas all over the back of your Seven and on your shoes. The gas station staff isn't all that happy, either. Get a couple of red plastic gas cans. The kind that do NOT have an air vent on a different location from the spout. The kind with a valve that is meant to be opened by allowing the weight of the can to open the valve when the little hook on the valve is allowed to press on the edge of fill port on lawnmower or the like. ( My lawnmower has a handy little shelf down inside the filler neck which allows the spout to go farther into the tank to reduce the gas from splashing out.) If the spout valve has a little nanny-lock that you need operate each time you want to open the valve, remove that with a pair of cutters. You need the valve to respond to your commands without interference. I picked five and two gallon sizes. Both can be filled at the gas station without a lot of drama. You can have multiple big cans in whatever size you can handle in their vertical-valve orientation. You really only need one small can. You want a small size that you can easily handle with the valve/spout in a horizontal orientation. Two gallons worked for me. Add a piece of hose to the spout. Make sure it has a good seal to the spout. The idea is to have the length from the valve-actuation to the end of the hose long enough so that when the valve is operated the end of the hose is all the way into the Seven's gas tank. Pick up the small can. Shove the hose into the car. This is not easy, as the hose wants to hang up on this and that. I have experimented with tapering the leading edge of the hose. Engage the hook on the edge of the car's gas port and push the tank forward to open the valve. The gas will glug into the tank. Periodically, the gas flow will glug to a halt as air from the tank backfills up the spout. If the can empties completely, raise the can and drain the hose into the car. Put the little can on the ground and refill it from the big can just as if it were a big lawnmower tank. Repeat the procedure. When the gas in the tank rises to the end of the hose, air can't get into the hose and gas stops flowing from the can. I'm calling this "vapor lock" whether that is the correct term or not. Let up the pressure on the can to close the valve. Withdraw the hose a few inches and raise the can so the gas in the hose drains into the car. Lower the can and carefully withdraw the now-dry hose from the car. The tricky part is knowing how long to make the hose. If you make the hose too long, you won't fill much of your tank. If you make the hose too short, you will have a gas mess again. Ideally, the vapor lock will occur when the tank is almost-full, but not yet into the car's large filler hose. I tried this method at home and at an autocross practice day and it seems to work. I still have not determined the ideal hose length, so I am erring on the side of "too long" instead of "gas-soaked Seven". You could do this at the gas station with just the little can, but you might not feel comfortable carrying a partly-full gas can in your Seven. (It is difficult to see the hose on one of the little cans in the truck photo.)

I haven’t ever really determined my maximum range or filled my tank all the way (except the time I overflowed!) but I tried to crunch the numbers from my notepad-based drive log over the past two years and it seems I get around 20mpg, give or take. This is mostly on canyon drives (since the hills start 10 minutes away), so I guess I’m satisfied. Would always like to see a little better though! Edit: Zetec on TWM throttles, Pectel T2, 13” Toyo 185/205 tires. Actually a bigger rolling diameter than stock so my economy should be *slightly* above indicated but not enough to matter.

I wondered why Steve left the practice day before the 4:00 shutdown. People told me the Electo-Birkin had shut down midrun. I didn't notice at the time. Apparently several folks pushed the car onto Steve's trailer and he took it home. I saw Harold at the autocross this morning. Not wishing put him on the spot, I tried to ask a general question: ===== What's the status of the Electo-Birkin? "I wanted to go home and spend some time with my wife and family." A laudable action. How about the Electo-Birkin? "A problem with the proximity circuit." What kind of problem? "I had the sensor in my pocket." ===== Yes. It seems that as soon as Harold drove away, the car decided that the driver was out of range and shut down.
