If you look closely in the first picture you can see a small scoop riveted to the bonnet/hood. Here's a photo that shows it a little better from the front:

Mark - I lightened-up and zoomed in on your original photo and it certainly looks like it could be a Bullet gearbox with a different tailshaft and shift extension housing. I'm not familiar with the different options in that regard and how available they'd be in the states. Maybe check with Chris T. at Seven & Elans or Dave Bean. Do you think there was a gear shift lever extension on there originally? I know I drove a VW camper many years back that had one. Looked like this:

Twobone - The bolt pattern "could" be the same but the DCOE stacks are usually extended so they fit into the carb body counterbore instead of using a flange. Robert - The stock brake light switch should be 1/8" NPT which is available at local auto parts stores. I got tired of replacing the cheap brake light switches on my '64 MGB (interchangeable with the Birkin switch) so took the advice of a mechanic friend of mine and replaced it with one from a Harley (I think it was a late 90's Heritage or Road King model). It was pretty expensive at appr $19 back around 2000 but I've never had to replace it since and it takes very light pressure on the brake pedal to actuate. On the Birkin, I replaced the hydraulic switch with a GM adjustable mechanical switch mounted at the pedal since I was going through the whole wiring harness and didn't mind revising the brake switch location. The H-D switch that I bought looks like this but with a black body:

My 2001 Birkin originally came with 300# front and 150# rear. When I installed the rear trailing arm kit with heim joints I went with 175# rears on the recommendation of Woody Harris. I find the rear suspension to be much more compliant even with the stiffer springs. I also have my shocks set on the soft side with the ride height set at about 3 1/2" clearance to the oil pan due to some of the rough roads I drive on. Knock on wood, I haven't bottomed out in years!

I drive my Birkin every chance I get. The only time I won't drive it is when the snow comes and there's crap on the roads. Ok, it's not much fun to drive in steady rain either so I typically won't drive it when there's much rain predicted. Cold weather is no longer an issue since I picked up a heated motorcycle jacket. It does get tiring driving on the highway but if I slow it down to 65mph (or below) or use the side curtains I find it's much more tolerable.
