Is that the yellow Morgan that was featured in an episode of Fantomworks on Velocity? Steve -
Fitting 4-1 Comp Header in 1991 Caterham with Crossfow
bball7754 replied to O Racer's topic in General Tech
John - Hope these photos help. The pipe from cylinder 1 intersects the body 6" back from the bolt in the engine mount which attaches to the frame. Other answers. It came with the 4-1 exhaust, so don't have anything to compare it to. It's a 1998 with the diagonal cross member. Can definitely fit the pipes without removing the steering column. My rebuild is a bit milder than yours. 40mm webers, large valves, port work, roller rockers, 83.5 pistons, 10:1 CR, SCAT crank, wet sump, standard rods, Kent 244 cam. Dynos really vary, but think it made around 158 hp (adjusted) at the crank at about 7200 RPM. Can't find my dyno sheets right now, so working from memory. Engine builder was surprised, to be honest. John - have the 4 to 1 on my Xflow. I'll take some pictures tonight and post. Hopefully they'll help. Steve -
Anyone else started watching the weather forecast? It's an illness with me. Steve

Seating Safety 'Protecting the Bumb's Bum'
bball7754 replied to xcarguy's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Shane - I think a bare seat (Kirkey, Sparco, whatever) with an SFI foam insert would be a good way to go. This company builds them, and you can see some examples on their photo page. http://www.speedseatfactory.com/Full_Circle_Formula/Speed_Seat_Photos.html My Mallock had nothing but a bare seat bottom on the floorpan, and used the rear bulkhead as the seat upright. I purchased an SFI foam kit, and created a custom seat. Steve -
I replaced my Caterham belts with Schroth belts, and have been extremely happy with them. HMS Motorsport will make a set pretty much to your specifications. My lap belts are "pull up", and the latch is on the inside lap belt for each set. Also, your Caterham likely has attachment points behind the seats for the crotch/sub straps. Steve

Tom - I have the same problem. No issue when driving on the street, but over pressurizes when I drive on track. Also no exhaust in the coolant, although I've only tested once. I think that's about the extent of the similarities between my Crossflow and your Duratec.
-
Tom - too early to start polishing. I'd read about your cooling issue on Blatchat, and thought it was resolved? I'm still over-pressurizing my cooling system at the track. Have a new head gasket, and am targeting changing it next weekend. Steve

So, the last 3 years I've stayed at the Fairfield, and it seemed like most stayed at the track. This year, I reserved a room at the track, and everyone seems to be staying at the Fairfield. Is it something I said? Steve

My memory of feedback on Blatchat is that they aren't great about returning emails. I'd give them a call. I have an early model of their half-hood, which doesn't have the small window in the center. Believe they added specifically for owners that had added a rollbar mounted third brake light. If your regular hood goes on with your mirror, the half-hood will. Steve

A childhood friend, Jim Adams, was a co-author of the book "The USS Arizona", and worked at the memorial. Have a copy of the book, but confess I've only leafed through it. Steve

Seven S-2 thrown rod through block
bball7754 replied to newtoit's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I would think you could find a replacement block, although I'm not sure how different the early pre-Crossflow blocks are from the later blocks. It may even be possible to use an early Crossflow block. Here's a Crossflow with a patched block: http://www.thekentlives.com/index.php/tech/engine/enginerebuilds#patch Steve -
Mike - Thanks, and the Caterham it is, then.

Would I be violating the spirit of this event if I brought the Mallock? http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?9691 I think I'd still be the only one with Crossflow power. Steve

Ariel Atom 3.5R. The Broadley T76 was close - and would have been my choice. Steve

"....even the slowest CrossFlow is very quick through every corner." Hey, I resemble that remark! Count me in, including the Karting on Friday. Second Mike's recommendation of not waiting to make reservations. With it being a holiday weekend, the hotels fill up fast. Steve

Mike - you might research the Formula Ford forum on ApexSpeed. Looks like there are Hoosier bias ply in those sizes. Steve

Birkin S3 reliability/ownership

Because of a change in policy at work, I now access the site from my phone. The location of a member doesn't seem to be displayed on my IPhone. It does when I access it from my PC. -
Advice I've read and followed for the valve cover is to not over tighten the cover. If you do, it just creates gaps in the gasket. If you have a stamped steel cover, there are load spreading washers that are supposed to help. If you have a cast aluminum cover, you're not supposed to use one type of gasket, but confess I can't remember if it's the cork gasket or not. No advice on the oil pan. Mine leaked until I had my engine rebuilt - now it doesn't. But don't know what the engine builder used. Steve

I purchased a Schroth Pofii II Formula style 6-point and a set of ASM from MSAR in the UK because they were "Caterham specific". http://www.msar.co.uk/motorsports/Race-Harnesses/Racing-6pt-Belts/Car-Specific/Schroth-Caterham-Profi-II-6F-Formula-Style_226.html It was not a wise move on my part. The shoulder strap fittings were not sewn in, which I suppose is ok for racing but not what I wanted for the street. I ended up contacting HMS Motorsport to see if the fittings could be corrected, and worked with Derek Mulson. He, and HMS Motorsport, were fantastic. The changed the fittings, and made other adjustments/corrections. http://www.hmsmotorsport.com/ Basically, I think they can customize any of the harnesses to whatever specs you want. So, if you know how long you want/need the shoulder and lap straps to be, I think they could create a custom set for you, and I don't think they charge extra for it. Definitely worth a call. Steve

Seven's Gathering at Barber Motorsports Park???
bball7754 replied to yellowss7's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Tom - I'm interested. Have kicked myself a number of times for not doing the Barber trackday at LOG. Maybe a fall date, assuming NJMP is late-June/early July again? Steve -
Maybe some of the Crossflow/specialist engine builders might have one lying around?

I would call Dave Bean. My copy of the English Ford Racers Catalog shows that he may have 109E con rods, although it also says "Use anything but these!" There is a section that covers the "Dimensional Chronology", and includes a comment section. For the 109E, it says "Contained infamous "glass ball" hollow cast iron crank; good to 20 minutes at racing speeds." Steve
