I just pulled an ATX-30HD out of my 289 cobra roadster, replacing it with a larger Yellow top Optima. The lithium batteries are extremely sensitive to voltage coming from your charging system. Mine was right at the 13.8-14V, and I may have fried it, as even after I hit the reset button (built in secondary charge instead of jump starting), I got no voltage to even the clock in the dash. Checked all connections, zip, nothing. Cannot charge it, as lithium batteries take a specific type of charger, made just for them.  So, just beware, if you spend the money on the Lithium battery, make sure you spend the extra couple of hundred dollars for the accessories.

Vlad,

Have you tried the SC-1?

Jim

So Ive tried it now

It's enough.. but barely. I kept a 5amp trickle charger and an portable 18v inverter in my car on my travels in case I ran out. So far no issues but I've also haven't had to do excessive cranking. I'd say it's probably good for about 5-10 solid full all cylinder rotations.

With that said, I was disappointed in the mount I've ordered for it on eBay as it's nowhere near as well polished and refined as it is in the picture, locking bolts don't quite line up and it will be returned.

Also there was a battle with my SO as the internet isnt too friendly towards horror stories for Lithium car batteries and how it can be a hazard to have in a house

I've discovered that they can have a run away overheating problem.

When there is an issue they start creating heat faster than they can dissipate it and it becomes a fire risk problem.

From what I've read anti gravity is supposed to have safety mechanisms in it to prevent that but my carelessness proved to me that it's not idiot proof...

If you mount the battery in reverse after placing it in a new mount and not realizing that it's backwards, it will cause a short... And start a runaway heating cycle...

Still not sure if car is alright but battery is compromised and shot, and is resting in a fire pit right now

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Just wanted to add my experience. I've been using an Anti-Gravity ATX12-HD-RS for three years now and so far it's performed flawlessly. Hasn't had any trouble cranking over my little Sigma, and seems to hold a charge for extended idle periods. I've removed the Immobilizer to get rid of that current draw and use an Optimate lithium charger only. Weighs a little over 3lbs IIRC.

Timely thread resurrection. I've been contemplating dry sumping my engine and the battery is currently right where I'd like to put dry sump stuff -- right rear corner of the engine compartment. I've recently re-registered the car as an antique so I can ditch the silly windshield washer tank, plus I have no heater whatsoever, so there is a lot of space up there for a battery. I'm a bit leery of the lithium batteries, they seem to be hyper sensitive to charging parameters and the downside can be catastrophic. My garage isn't anywhere near as valuable as Jay Leno's, and he uses Odyssey batteries, so I'm leaning in that direction.

I guess I never updated this thread with my solution, which has been working perfectly. The tie-down is probably overkill in terms of strength for such a light battery, but I am a bit paranoid. Also, I still lost a total of 16lbs from the OEM setup.

I had a corvette pitted next to me a VIR that had the lithium battery catch fire. Now racetracks are not letting electric cars run. I am just a little leery of them.

  • 2 weeks later...

Josh at RMC fabbed up a bracket and installed the AG SC-1  battery during my cars annual service. It's too hot to drive the car now (105 today and 114 expected this weekend), but I've driven it very short distances and it starts strongly. I use the battery cut off religiously, but I also bought the correct battery tender.  The weight savings was almost exactly 15 lbs. I expect to put about 2,000 miles on the car in August, so it should be a good test of the battery. I did have Josh keep the Banner battery just in case.

Josh also installed the PGM self cancelling blinker module, I'm curious to see how I like it. https://www.pgmsussex.com/product-page/indicators
