KnifeySpoony
I just realized my sticker doesn't say SPCNS on it- is that gonna be an issue with regards to smog testing?
Sean
At the bottom of the sticker it reads: "COMMENTS: SB100 Seq# 2021-111inspection body" That statement on there has me thinking you should have no issue, as the proper no smog path in California is 1) SB100, with 2) body inspection (as opposed to engine inspection)
mca
Any recommendations for a Southern California DMV office to initiate the SPCNS/SB100 process?
awatkins
In 2010 when I lived in Encinitas I deliberately went to the San Clemente office because it was rumored to be associated with State Senator Johannesen, a Lotus Seven owner (https://www.semasan.com/driving-force/november-2001, who was the driving force behind SB100. Sure enough, they knew exactly what to do without looking anything up. Whether any of that is meaningful 11 years later is anybody's guess but I would expect the chances are good. toldfield
My car was assembled in 1983 and registered as such in California. I went to the DMV in Pasadena. A friend had given them a heads up that I was seeking an SB100 Sequence Number. They did not have a clue. The boss brought out a huge dust covered book that looked like it came from a Harry Potter movie. After about an hour of page turning and head shaking they figured it out and we completed the application. They were bewildered but at least worked to figure it out. I got the Sequence Number about a week later and the BAR inspector issued a new sticker. Mine indicates a 1960 engine and SPCNS. The registration papers indicate that it is exempt from smog inspections. Edited January 5, 2022 by toldfield edit

KenCat
Looking for help. If I buy a used Caterham with a VIN registered in NY state, what do I need to do to register in CA? Car would be 2013, low milage.

You'll need to get in line for an SB100 Which is why 7's in CA that are already registered there carry a premium for others that buy them there as they've been through the process and got the exception https://bauerltd.com/the-magical-sb100-registering-your-car-in-california/ Edited April 30, 2023 by Vovchandr

IamScotticus
is it a lottery system for a SB100? Edited May 7, 2023 by IamScotticus

CA allows 500 cars per year to be registered under the SB100 process. As you register your car, you are assigned a sequence number. I’m working my way through the system now, so I’m learning quite a bit about the process.

I hope you’re right about San Clemente! I live in San Clemente and have registered a few salvage motorcycles there without any problem, but in a year or two I will be trying to get my ‘61 Lotus Seven, from AZ and without a title, ( I do have a photo of the AZ title) registered in CA. I’m hoping with its age etc it won’t be as challenging as some others have found with their Caterhams. If anyone has any guidance or suggestions I’ll be very happy to take it all on board. Thank you, Ian San Clemente, CA
awatkins
Well, to be clear what I'm saying about San Clemente from 13 years ago is specific to SB100 because "the author" of the law represented that district, which has little to do with missing titles, etc. However, although I've never done a "document-free" registration myself, my impression from reading DMV docs is that at worst they require a bond to protect against subsequent claims that someone else owns the car, and that these aren't expensive. The key here would be to carefully read the DMV docs because it's not a new topic at all.
