That Locost project looks to be a heck of a deal. Too bad it's not closer, I'm sure my son and his Miata friends would be interested in making a AutoX/track car out of something like that.

The Craigslist platform is getting less effective over time. If you search for a Lotus 7 in Redding CA area now you get 1500 hits because of sketchy car dealers who list every manufacturer within their ad to maxmize their chance of selling a used Toyota Camry. Similar exists in Phoenix. Only way around it is to review each ad across the listings to see if a true seven lurks. No way I am going to do that. And I suspect other buyers less patient than me are saying the exact same thing. Hopefully the new $5 per Craigslist car ad thins this ad spam out.

I still think USA7s and Ebay together are the best way to reach the market for selling a seven - both are national/international, both can have safeguards built into the sale, both are fairly cheap.

While I agree, and in this case even filtering to not list dealers won't help, Craigslist has a good history of figuring issues out within the platform and addressing them over time.

I wouldn't be surprised if this gets fixed in the future.

However you're right the false listings help nobody. I doubt anybody was searching for a "Caterham" and came across a Kia Rio Ad and made a spontaneous purchase of that instead.

I'd add Bring-A-Trailer (BAT) as a site to possibly market a se7en. The prices for Caterhams, in particular, have been very (very) strong there. IF I were to sell my se7en, I'd start there, then head here and then, E-Bay.

I had a thought recently and your post reminded me of it. This might require another thread/discussion but I'll start here.

A big part of why our prices remain strong is because we believe they should remain strong when we go to list them and determine the market. Rare cars get expensive as a general rule because owners on their own determine that their car is worth more and there isn't enough of competitive market for that car to prove them otherwise. They essentially becomes a one man market at the time of listing.

Our cars, while still produced but very limited in availability in US have the pricing set by a small unofficial union of owners determining where the value should be. Large part of them being on this forum. If I recall the numbers there is an average of ~50 a year that get sent to US, so not many at all.

There is an unofficial floor for any average Caterham to be worth ~$25k plus as we've seen and up from there determining options, condition, title situation etc. But hypothetically nothing stops us from raising the floor to ~$30k average for any average Caterham considering what they still cost new in US and how limited their supply market is.

This type of thinking gets bantered around at various make/model specific forums for years. This issue being that only a small part of the enthusiasts and owners/sellers visit such sites. Add in the usual supply vs demand vs new enthusiasts on this site vs the older ones. The bottom line here is a simple one, sites like this were started by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts, when you start throwing values around, greed ultimately rears it's ugly head, and then the site is no longer about enthusiasts, but about resale value. Ultimately, the choice is with each buyer and seller, they, and only they can decide on what is and what is not a fair market value for a specific car, color, or drivetrain combination. As a seller, you can ask whatever you want for a car, as a buyer, I can then decide whether the car fits my wants and needs, and whether the value is comparable with others on the market, again remembering, this site, and sites like it are just a microcosm of the marketplace.

Just my two cents worth on this particular subject, posted both from a buyers and sellers perspective, one who never looked at any of the cars I've owned as "investments", just "toys to have fun with".

Completely fair. Thanks for the feedback. Haven't came across this discussion in the wild but appears its nothing new, so disregard.

I don't have a dog in the fight, just thinking out loud. I don't plan on selling as I haven't even sold cars/toys I use/like less over the last 15 years, much less do I expect to get what I have into it after putting money into it as desired.

Two thoughts-- the Spectra in LA is interesting although not a "7" and the Replica in Fayetteville appears to have Superformance S1 fenders (front and rear), front fender mounting and the front suspension looks like it could be. Possible source of parts??

Shouldn't the prisoner have red accents in interior? Overall seems like a good buy.

"I am selling my 1998 Catheram 7, this is the original not a replica."

The ad threw me for a loop. So when did they make a Catheram 7? Is this variant of the Caterham? Supposedly it's original and not a replica. I thought all of our cars were replicas? I'm confused. :smash:
