Vovchandr Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 $21k buy-it-now? Something doesn't seem right with that either. Lots of things seem.. off with that one. Was that motor a cable clutch?
Croc Posted October 3, 2019 Author Posted October 3, 2019 Check the seller. It’s likely Kampena Motors. Demonstrator model? Probably ran on dealer plates all that time with the odd track day? Price is interesting. There will be a reason for it Maybe a little tatty? Maybe no receipts for drive train after all this time so that will be a pain in many states to get through title process?
yellowss7 Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Lots of things seem.. off with that one. Was that motor a cable clutch? Vlad, In the UK they used a cable for the clutch. For the US, a hydraulic clutch was usually used because of the longer cable run for a LHD vs the RHD. Mine has a Hydraulic clutch, although I can attest that they didn't really think that thru, as I had to modify the slave cylinder mounting and use a clevis to attach the slave to the clutch arm. When I had called the Caterham engineer to ask if there was a part I need to make the connection, he replied... " we never did a left hand Dry sumped RoverK before, let me know how you make out" That car is not a dry sumped one though. Tom
georgedodson Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Tom, Oh, " Let me know how you make out". One of my favorite phrases from the "Factory Support Team". Only surpassed by the response to "I need to speak with the engineer who designed that" with "I'm sorry, he died last year". georgedodson Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 Has anyone had issues buying a 7 from Craigslist, especially from some distance away?
Anaximander Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) I had an issue purchasing a car sight unseen on Craigslist that Croc had found and posted. The seller/builder of the car was a superb constructor but did not know a lot about mechanical issues. I had driven half way across the country to find that the car had a leaking intake manifold with antifreeze clearly visible on the engine block. I checked the oil and there was no indication of antifreeze incursion into the oil. The seller was truly apologetic and offered to pay half of the necessary guesstimated repair which I thought was more than fair. Had the seller been something of a crook, there could have been numerous undisclosed discrepancies that would have made the deal untenable. I try to buy from people that have a public history of being on the up and up and tend to shy away from people that do not have a positive public presence. If it were me, I would try and contact someone on our site that lives close to the car of interest and have them give it a once over before considering moving forward. Unless the car is a steal and it doesn't matter what is wrong and can be fixed within a reasonable budget. Even, then, I would carefully query the seller to understand what is what with the car? Vovchandr Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) Has anyone had issues buying a 7 from Craigslist, especially from some distance away? I went across the country for my 7. It was a forum post but might as well have been a craigslist listing. (it was also listed on some racecarsforsale website). Low posting member with little communication. Lucky for me I had a friend that lived out in the area and did a preliminary overlook for the car before I flew out, took pictures etc. The car still had lots of issues between original build and whatever the previous owners did. Took close to a year to get original issues sorted out, but the price was worth it and in my history of cars I expected it needing work, so no regrets on my end. As AB said, having somebody local come out and check it out first can save everybody a lot of wasted time, particularly if you have no reason to trust the seller. You'd be surprised at how many people are willing to dedicate a day to check out a car for somebody else, especially if it's something they are passionate about. When I was buying my first bike over a decade ago and the forums were much stronger, I actually had two volunteers to check out a bike for me that was about 11 hours away before I made my trip. The pre-inspection can eliminate a lot of guess work and make you feel a lot better about committing a trip without having your stomach in knots about the unknown. Edited October 8, 2019 by Vovchandr
