I own a CSR260. I imagine that long term, we'll be better served by having a distinct thread for distinct topics.
-
Who is interested this tread concept? Or should I start individual topics for each question?

I just arrived back home in Minnesota after buying a CSR 260 in California and I have questions. Because the CSR 200 and CSR 260 are a bit different from other Caterham cars, I thought I would start this thread to attract input from USA7s members who own, or have knowledge about, these cars.

Help picking a tow vehicle and trailer for my Caterham
pethier replied to savagete2860's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Well said. Trailer hitches are a hazard to pedestrian navigation in paddocks and car parks. Sidebar: I'm pretty sure my F-150 won't fit in my garage if the trailer hitch is installed. -

Sticky posts are intended to keep important topics that I want everyone to see at the top of a sub forum. They are not intended to aid discoverability for non-critical or non-time sensitive topics. As soon as you do that, you open the door for a metric shitload of pinned topics in a forum that negatively impacts usability. A simple search for "trailers" returns this as the first topic. Granted it's new, but search works for simple subjects like this. If someone wants to invest the time to turn this thread's information into an article and include links to any relevant threads, I think that would make a great addition to that section of the site. Any volunteers? -

Help picking a tow vehicle and trailer for my Caterham

@JohnCh Can we sticky this thread? Trailer question is pretty important to lots of 7 owners and this thread has information that covers pretty much all the basis across the board. -

Personal advice as somebody who's been towing casually for years cars and bikes in enclosed trailers is to setup some cameras to keep an eye on the cargo and/or behind you for back up reasons or otherwise. I HATE the "box of unknown" behind you being towed for hours. If something goes wrong, the feeling that I let it go for hours will eat up at me forever as damage could have been prevented if spotted early. I've had that happen with bikes that come loose and lay against the trailer wall so I would end up stopping frequently and checking on things out of worry. Since then I've set up a "nanny cam" - wireless trailer camera set. Put one inside and one at the rear of the trailer so I can either watch the cargo to see if something is loose/shifting, watch behind me or both. Its not free (a few hundred) and sort of annoying to install but I can't imagine towing without this comfort. As far as brand they are all generic copies of each other and I bought mine years ago, so I'm not upto date on whats currently good. These aren't black and white, they switch to night vision at night. Full color during the day. -

Thank you for all this information Croc. It's very helpful and gives lots of food for thought. I'm going to increase the caster angle by a couple of shims (it's at the minimum now) before the next autocross and see how that feels before I change much more. I'm enjoying the current settings on the road, and have been experimenting with the balance. Having a passenger really changes things for obvious weight distribution reasons, but riding solo the rotation is there. I'm about to hit 1k miles since purchase, mostly backroad miles and many smiles. I'm still dealing with a strong fuel smell out of the tank when it's over half, and seeing wet spots around the fuel level sender. The culprit appears to be the fuel level sender gasket, so I ordered the Spectra L066 part I found here on the forum and will see if that works. The EVAP delete and simplified vent are working great however. I'll make a post on the General forum later for any Zetec owners that may experience something similar.

No windshield sits 3-4 mm away from front bar of cage.

Lookin' good! Just curious, does the windshield touch to cage tubing across the top?

Big week for us last week. Car is basically finished. Brakes and clutch bled. Followed the advice of disabling immobilizer to crank for oil pressure then once that was done and reset car started after about 4-5 attempts. Good oil pressure but haven’t run it enough to check temp gauge. Need to do a rough alignment before a test drive. We didn’t pay enough attention to alignment in the front suspension build phase and we are clearly way off on toe in and camber. As it seems everyone does we are chasing a couple of electrical gremlins. One of the LED headlights is an issue. Other is fine and signal and hazards work fine. Once we chase it down a bit more will likely come back to the group for some advice. Missing a couple small parts related to wing mirrors and waiting on roll cage additional brake light. Decided to go with classic Caterham race light style. Will likely get nose and bonnet on next week and will post completed picture.

Help picking a tow vehicle and trailer for my Caterham

For awnings, check out Kammok. More expensive, but their's doesn't require poles and setup and takedown time is seconds. I have one on my LR3 and use it frequently because it is so easy/quick to use - whereas a traditional awning would only be used for long stops and times that absolutely demand it. Would be a great solution mounted on the back and/or side of a trailer. -
i really don't have a lot of details. Steve wanted to make his Birkin an electric car. My only significant involvement in the project was to buy the gasoline stuff from the car. (in the process I found that it is possible to harm a Zetec engine from a Birkin in a Caterham in a way that was not possible when the engine was in the Birkin.) Steve's Birkin has a live axle, so one thing I can tell you is that Steve kept the driveshaft (propellor shaft, to our British friends) and has sited the electric motor in the front of the car. Steve has been working on this electric project for several years. The control system is highly-sophisticated. The object of the enterprise is autocross performance. Steve and fellow autocrosser Harold finally got the car to an autocross practice day just before I went to California. I have told Steve about USA7s. If he chooses to join us here you can ask him.

whoa -- details? -
Oh, ok, but they put Zetecs in Caterhams too so..... I am a fan of injection myself. Too many years fiddling with carbs...

Caterham 1700 Super Sprint: The pushrod engine, cable-operated clutch, bellhousing, and Ford T9 5-speed has been removed. That drive package is slated to go in a USA7s member's Lotus 7. The Birkinazation process: Install drive package from a Birkin: Ford Zetec engine, larger clutch with hydraulic operation, alloy bellhousing, and Ford T-9 5-speed. Ford injection not used. Prior to my ownership, the Zetec ran side-draft Weber carbs, then Hayabusa injection. The Birkin that provided the driveline is now 100% electric.

Today was the Boot ‘n Bonnet Club’s spring tour. It was not supposed to rain but it was only 7c when I left the house so the wife made me wait while she put up the hood. As she says it’s her job and I’ll only screw it up. I left it up all day. Although there were lots of clouds it was a high UV day and I have to protect my skin. Plus, it was better for the high speed Super Slab drive to and from the event. (About an hour and ten minutes one way.) We had 14 LBC's in total. We drove some very nice hilly, twisty roads well within the legal limits. (I will go back later in the year to re visit a couple of these roads and I will maintain a higher average speed.

Nj also require head-neck restraint device. none of which are required for non-driving participants.
-
I was very much planning on going but I am not signed up yet. I didn't realize until more recently NJMP requires dated harnesses and arm restraints. I don't have either of those so I probably wont sign up this year unless I get that stuff squared away. Yeah I noticed they do Wonderful Wednesdays and Track Days with Reed Kryder 2x a month. WW is for "Experienced drivers" and I have only been running in novice groups. I could probably run in an intermediate group without issues, but something about attending an event that calls out experienced drivers frightens me. The Reed Kryder events have novice, intermediate, and advanced, so that might be what I go to and work my way to at least intermediate before taking the plunge into Wonderful Wednesdays. Do you go to those?
