  1. Hi Brad, I do not have a Caterham but just a poor mans home built and have had the same problem at about the same mileage except my exhaust cracked where the pipes came to gather before the collector. The first time I welded the tubes together I did not use a gas backup in the exhaust tubes and was told by a friend that I needed to fill the tubes with an inert gas when welding them up to help prevent cracking problems due to vibration and heat (expansion) and exhaust rumble (the pulse from each cylinder firing). I though he was a bit over the top on that and just welded the crack up and with in I would say 250 miles I had two more cracks that I just welded up as a temp fix because I now realized that my friend was most likely correct plus I just wanted to improve my header and exhaust routing any way when I had the time. I have actually re-build (new tubes from engine to collector) the exhaust and did use a gas backup in the tubes and so far no cracks after about 500 miles of street an auto crossing and just having fun so I guess my friend dose know what he was saying about welding an exhaust up. Hope this helps.
  2. Squarefour, What are the zip ties on the lower left side of your steering wheel holding. Looks to be a small air spray bottle. Just woundering.
  3. Homebrew, Nice looking 7. I lived in Newberg, Or and still have family in Portland Metro area so the next time we are up their I will post and let you know so maybe we can meet. Here is a photo of my car on the first trailer in Newberg at our place. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/272584091_DSCN1682.JPG Still had hay on it when I loaded it (the 7 that is). Used a couple 2X10 stacked on top of each other under the pickups rear wheels to help the loading.
  4. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/1418604082_DSCN1508.JPG It is a cheap Pilot Steering wheel from Auto Zone or Napa was under $40 and came with the horn button and hardware to mount. Grip is soft rubber and is approx 1" in dia.. Approx 13 1/4" across. They due have one that is smaller that I have been thinking about trying.
  5. This article on a Caterham's Trip around China is worth watching and reading. I sure hope Peter Schindler hears about our group as I think he would fit in very well even though he lives in China. Here is a link to the whole story: http://www.ontheroadinchina.com/nokiadiscoverchina/index.php Well woth the time and a good cause also I due belive.
  6. Hi Mondo, I did not have any problem getting my (7 Replica) car registered in Calif and did not use the SB100 route (my 7 is registered as a 1963 Lotus 7 even though I built it from scratch). If you can get in registered in Texas in your name and as a 1970 (makes it smog exempt) or older then due that, then bring the car into Calif and just transfer the title and registration later in the year. As for the SB100 process my understanding is that you get the SB100 waver from the DMV and then when you have the car ready for the road (within the year of the exemption) you must have it inspected by the DMV and the CHP. The things that I was told they will look for are Vin Numbers / Manufacture Number from the manufacture and all safety items like lights, turn signals, brake light, seat belt (per 1964 cars are exempt from seat belts but recommended) and such items that make it road worthy. I had made a data plate that I mounted to the firewall for my car because I built it from scratch so I am the manufacture. They will want to see receipts for all the major components, engine, trans, rear dif etc. so that they can verify that they are not stolen (the CHP) and to assess the amount of TAX (the DMV) you will have to pay for the registration and title. It really is not that bad you just have to play their game and remember to smile and do not offer more information that necessary. If you have any questions I might be able to answer PM me and I will give you my phone number or try to answer any of your questions.
  7. I wounder what type of skid plate is on that 7. Those front fenders were working overtime.
  8. Hi Dave, It might be cheaper to have a flat bed tow truck take your car to the inspection station than using a u-haul car trailer. If your a member of AAA you can have your car towed as a member with just a phone call but you will have to tell them you will need a flat bed tow so they don't send a hook type tow truck. Just a though.
  9. I though it was already called the "FRANKLIN7" that was a Rotus in a previous life.
  10. :flag: That is a BIG RELIEF I'll bet for you.:hurray:
  11. :iagree:Everything Jerry said is true and you will find that you are busier than when you worked for a living. I know first hand as I have retired three times since 1990 and found that the jobs that I have taken on are a lot more fun now than when I had to work for a living as I find I due the job because it interest me. Have fun and enjoy your new found freedom.:flag:
  12. Hi Tom, Glad to hear you now own a nice 996. Do yourself a favior join the Porsche Club as the magazine is worth the membership in its self. I have been a PCA member since 1970 when I purchased my first Porsche, a 914-6 which I still have and will most likely always have besides the club has a lot of good people in it and they have very good social activitys for the Porsche owner and their family. Have fun and enjoy your new car.
  13. Hi Southwind25, I have been following your thread of the purchase of your car and find it to be strange that the seller is not willing to reduce the price or get the car in running order or transport it to someone who can due the job for you and him. I think the seller or the broker is just jerking your chain (gas is not that expensive if you understand what I am saying) and just wants your money. Have you talked directly with the owner and not the broker if not you should as this just seems a little funny especially if you have already paid for the car. If I were you I would just have the car shipped to you and then get it fixed and take the seller to court to get your money back for the repair especially if the seller stated in writing that the car is in good condition at the time you agreed to buy it. Sometimes it just takes getting mad and telling the seller that you want a complete refund or you will see him or her in court.
  14. Every year VARA conducts a two day driving school for all levels of drivers whether you have a street car that you want to drive better or see what your car is like on the skid pad, track or under threshold braking , or if you have a race prepped car. For 2008 it is on Feb 9 and 10 (Sat and Sun) at Buttonwillow Raceway Park which is westerly from Bakersfield just off I5. The entry fee is only $275 for the two day school. Plenty of motel rooms within 10 miles of the track or motor homes are fine. Hookups are availiable on a first come from the Track at a reasonable fee. A's , B's, English, German, Fords...were not partial. Open cars must have a roll bar. There will be four groups.....2 advanced and two novice/not so advanced. Track time, classroom time, skid pad and also threshold braking. Danny McKeever (Fast lane Instructor at Willow) conducts the classes and the instructor/student ratio is about 8:1 so you can get some personal attention. For meor information, safety requrements etc. look on the VARA website.......vararacing.com I have no affilation but though others might be interested.
  15. That kid did not think about the forward momentium did he....... No Pickle Barrel Patch for that flyer.
  16. You due know that the Tower Bridge in London England now charges a fee to go up to the walk way due to the number of people that were jumping off of it. I think it is fair, as the fee is used to pay for the cleanup crew cost.
  17. Mazda, Glad to hear your going to get the van fixed on their buck. Are the police going to ticket the guilty car driver or the friend as I due belive it is still hit an run especially if the damage is over $500 even though it happened in a public parking area. You should ask the police to see just what they are going to due unless you want to give the guilty person a early X-mass gift.
  18. MHKflyer52

    joke

    Good one....
  19. Mazda, The reason that I said that is a lot of times the guilty person will try and say they were not driving the vehicle that they had lent it to the neighbor or that they try to turn it around and say they did not know that their car had been hit and that you are the person in the wrong even when their is a eye witness due to the fact that it is now a hit an run not just an accident. Martin
  20. Mazda, Check the store for an outside security camera as most 7Elevens tape their parking lots for security reasons and maybe you can get the operator to give you a copy of their security photo/tape/disk if you ask nice. Martin PS: Happy Holidays
  21. My wife says I need to put a big coil spring above the gas tank just to mess with people. You know the kind that is found in old fashion clocks.
