Things are supposed to break on 7s. Don't ruin it.

What you wish you knew before ordering your car?
IamScotticus replied to Exarkun1178's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I suggest that the floors ship with the kit, saving in freight. However, it looks like having the low floors in place solves potential future issues. If you are too low, sitting on a folded towel may make it all acceptable. Also, if for some reason you didn't care for the lower floor, you could fab flat floors yourself. Flat sheet alm, not necessary to order it from Cat. -
Newer Caterham switches?

I would order the lowered floors to come as spares with the kit. Reason is, again the aforementioned gentleman, ordered a set but they did not fit the car. -
Well, they do padded dash covers, which in my opinion, is the equivalent. Everyone is entitled to do what they want with their car. I just cringe when something isn't "7". A posh dash definitely isn't 7. It's a 7, dear people, not an Excalibur.

Also, it's an excellent truck bed liner

I believe the OP was asking about ordering a 7? The things many new 7ers don't know clearly before they order are: The effort to register in their jurisdiction. The rules vary by state and county. Know what you have to do. Missing parts. Your Caterham will not arrive with all the parts or will have incorrect parts. Just expect it. Fit in the car. It's a very small car. If you call it a car. I know of one fellow who, no matter what he tried, lowered floors, different seats, etc, his knees hit the dash tube. Fortunately for him, he didn't spend $65K to find out. The attention you will get. People will aporoach you to ask about the 7, everywhere you go. -
Consider rubber stable/stall mat. not too hard to cut and will dampen most anything. Very hefty but they come in various thicknesses. I've seen similar material sold at Home Depot https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/boomerang-rubber-inc-4-x-6-black-rubber-utility-mat-2557368

Please, don't put that on the dash!

Caterham 6 speed gearbox for sale / repair
IamScotticus replied to SK400's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
Likely, but a lot can change in twelve years. -
Suspension is the dampers and the bushes. Loosen all suspension, load with half tank and passenger weight, adjust dampers to desired height, then tighten suspension. The bushes should be at rest at the nominal ride height 90% of the time because every bush acts on the suspension like a torsion spring. That's the theory anyway.

Howard, Was the TOB defect or out-of place? What's up? @williamwashere PM Me if interested. Unless I see someone on the Cat website dealer located, I wouldn't say they are a dealer.

New to 7s, just getting started, general questions...

@MK Sportscars USA yes, I'm helping you sell. You did the work. All we have to do is drop in the parts, with caution and know how. Excuse me if I'm out of turn, I don't read everything before shooting my mouth key strokes off. I just try to convince the ambitious to avoid getting into a endless pit project. -

You have to look at the transmission opinions for these motors. Will they fit in the tunnel? Trans mount type and location. Engine mount bracket location. Will you be able to hav a mount that attaches to the frame without blocking something else? Working out these things is hard to do without the chassis in hand, but if you buy all this stuff and try to cobble something together, you will find that 7s aren't easy to piece together. The absolute best thing you can do is buy a sweet running well assembled 7 for the lowest price you can. Enjoy it until you want more, then flip it. You will be spending your years driving, not years building. In most cases, complete cars sell for a lot less than the original builder spent on it. -
PM please

Montune is the USA supplier for Caterham I would still consider the Miata route. There will always be parts. -
Deleting the heater and plugging the port is a common practice. Routing to the wp is not necessary, but wouldn't hurt. Might be better for the head. I would cut a small hole in the new gasket for water passage and route to the wp. This prevents you from having to plug the manifold. The coolant flow direction is from the head to the pump. Don't forget to test your thermostat and check your cap gaskets. Don't use it if they are hard or cracked. This is a good time to pull studs, chase threads, clean them up and use anti-seize.( not on the head bolts)

Troll alert: High zinc oil (Valvoline VR1 20W50 is good and everywhere) End troll alret

Unless you have a steel crank, which Cat did not put in those engines, you should stay below 7K on the revs. Apparently ARI didn't know this. Sorry to troll on your thread. Dont FU your engine.

Ran my DCOEs on 37s. I've read that Chokes make more difference for off idle than at full throttle, or, the slow drive benefit may be more beneficial than the loss at the high end. It depends on what the car likes and what you want. Try bigger Chokes if you like but don't be surprised if you put the 28s back in Get a fuel pressure regulator if you're running an electric fuel pump. Running rich at idle may not be a real problem it's hard to achieve a perfect balance with these. You may need to be rich at idle so you you're not lean off-idle. Properly dialed in you may be spitting gas out the pipe. Its a 1960s engine, expect it to break all the rules. You can get hotter plugs, plugs with multiple electrodes and put in a MSD to improve low speed driving, although I will say Advanced Distibutors say MSD doesn't do anything. Those who use them like them. Get the one with a Rev limiter and set the cut at 6800 to save your crank. More than helpful,

I supposet this would apply to sidecars too. Four legislators. And I'm ashamed to say, Republicans. WTF boys? We're talking a very small percentage of vehicles. Then have registrations for Autocycles. -

A slateboard on wheels is something you definitely should do your best to try b4 you buy. Also, know the titling and registration process for what you get. Too many states processes are too difficult. Try a Polaris Slingshot if casual cruises are your goal. Part of ths reason a Caterham is pricey is it's a race car. There are other skateboards that give you, not the same but, a good wind in the face experience. And Slings have four wheel conversions available. Coming from Formula cars, a Sling may not be your thing, but they are easy to register. You may look in your area for a rental, go driving in traffic, and decide if the skateboard life is for you. A Caterham, and most 7s, are rough rides. A Sling is more comfortable, built for a "wider" range of people. Its almost the perfect toy. They've been here for ten years. Just an honest opinion for someone who is in the shopping phase.
