Good article (link works for me). It was nice to see them use the word blat, although I suspect it confused some of their US readers :) I was less pleased to see them perpetuate the myth that Caterham continues to name their cars based on the hp/ton rating. That stopped a while ago and now they simply double the hp, round up to a nice number and call it a day. If it were true, the cars would weigh less than 500kg.

Damn marketers...they should all be sent to remedial algebra. :rant:

I agree with the hp naming convention misrepresentation.

 

I find it quite amusing that in the description on their own website they list the real hp/ton which doesn't match the model number.

THey are marketing folks you know. I doubt they have ever dealt in reality in any point in their lives. Calculators are beyond them. Apparently they are also the profession with the biggest dicks. Never would have guessed...

I was in a pedantic mood when I ranted about that earlier (damn bearing issue....) I think Caterham's current branding is fine and more useful than the old one since the sub models have weight differences (S vs. R, SV vs. S3). This system tells you the hp, or close to it provided you can divide by 2 in your head. I just think R&T should know better, particularly when they provide weight and hp numbers in the article that clearly don't add up to 310 bhp/ton. Kind of makes me wonder if they actually understand what that formula means. It's not blatantly obvious to many Americans who have trouble with the metric system and grew up with lb/hp, but I expect better from R&T given their history. Heck, they explained to us that a BMW 328 no longer means it has a 2.8L engine, but they couldn't figure this out? :jester:

 

Sorry for insulting any marketers on the forum. Full disclosure, I was one for many years :)

I got my May issue of R&T and it has the latest installment in their Caterham build story. Some lovely pictures and maybe 750 words.

 

Sam Smith, the author of the article, is also R&T's Editor at Large and in a second article he notes that he now lives 40' from the legendary Tail of The Dragon in TN. So I would expect a review of the new Caterham, once it is completed, in its "element" at the Dragon (where USA7s held its 2007 celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Lotus Seven).

 

I wonder if I am the only surviving participant of that event who is still active here? I CAN say that the Dragon, and the equally excellent, tho less famous, nearby roads brought the best out in my Caterham and in the collection of other se7en marques who all gathered for the event.

I don't subscribe to R&T anymore, but I'll have to pick up the issue just to read the article.

 

Although my Birkin was a month or two from being on the road, I did make it to the event with the ex's Mini Cooper. Had a lot of fun riding with various member's Sevens but wish I could have had my car done by then. I hope to be more active here once I start building my new 310S. It's been waiting patiently in it's crates as I finish my big garage project. :(

Its really well written - it conveys what it is like for the average person coming into one of these builds. It conveys the wry humor of screwing up. It also conveys the sense of achievement of noodling and solving the problems. It also lays the ground work for the next article in series which should convey the deep satisfaction of building a living and running thing.

I totally agree Croc. I like to say the first lesson every racer must learn is humility (hmmm, did my 'Vette just get passed by a Civic?).

 

It seems to be true of mechanical work as well. I had my Miata aligned today by a mechanic I have known forever who, among other things, has his 50 year SCCA pin (The Caterham is in a time-out for bad behavior). But he spent almost as much time looking for the right wrench in his pile of wrenches as I do.

 

And $hit happens. I agree the R&T writing abt this project is exemplary. And who doesn't identify with all the dumb stuff that has happened on that build?
