"There's a new tyre for Academy in 2024: Toyo. They've only recently become available and the biggest difference is the 60 profile over the outgoing 65." The table below shows what I found scouring this forum and the internet with the first couple of lines being the old ZZRs for reference. Does anyone have any knowledge about Hoosier R7 vs. Kumho V70A vs. Toyo R888 as far as cornering performance? The UK supplier was convinced the Kumho V70A are better than the Avon ZZRs anyway, which was surprising to hear. Not sure if the 888 is some kind of softer compound for 13" sizes, but the R7 is a much sticker tire than the 888 in larger sizes for "normal" cars. Croc Posted May 11 Share Posted May 11 I run the Hoosier R7 on the CSR on track in the USA. Love them. Definitely quicker lapping than the Avon ZZR extreme compound. Good life to them as well. I think I use them in 13x7 and 13x9 on my car - not next to it to check sorry. As for Avon ZZR extreme versus Toyo R888, I can let you know 10 days from now when I am at Dijon and Mas Du Clos. I have half a set of the Avons left and a fresh set of the Toyos to go on. The only reason I went for the Toyos as a replacement is that slicks are not allowed and the best treaded tire right now, per TFL Racing who support 40 something Caterhams for race and track, are the Toyos. However, I have been told to expect to be slower by 2+ seconds a lap over the Avons - sad but thats it for now. Edited to add I did talk with Roger Krause two weeks back about what others are doing without the Avon ZZR. His solution is to take a Formula Continental slick and have it hand grooved. Gives you the life of a slick but the appearance of DOT. I have also heard that someone else is doing this is Michelin F3 tires. Depends on whether a DOT label is checked I suppose? Roger is well plugged into the owner of Nova - he's the guy for supplies when Nova is up and running. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A7 compound is not available for the 185s according to their documentation...no idea what the logic is for that. I raced with a set of As and Rs a few weeks ago in a SpoecE46, turned out which to run depended on track temperature more than anything, the Rs are very difficult to heat up in cooler weather. KnifeySpoony Posted May 12 Share Posted May 12 Seems odd that the smaller sizes aren't available in A compound; seems counterintuitive to me. I wonder what a 225 square setup would be like. Front OD is same, but rear is smaller. Would need to tweak geometry, and roll stiffness as well to restore balance. Steering weight and feel could suffer too. That's a big bump up in front tire section. Looks like the formula continental slick is a better fit choice: https://www.hoosiertire.com/news/article/71058/Hoosier_Releases_New_Spec_Tire_for_SCCA_Formula_Continental_Class. I wonder what the R60A compound is like compared to Avon's A64/A24/extreme compounds. Hoosier says it's for hot temps "'The R60A compound works best in summer season temperatures where track temps often exceed 95F." I still drive my car to the track - I'm not that worried about getting "caught" out with slicks, but construction and compound need to be capable enough to be able to drive to/from trackdays safely. If it needs a lot of heat, it could be even sketchier when cold than the ZZR. Hoosier puts that compound on all sorts of tires, including kart tires, so it must be fairly temp versatile. I believe you said one time, they run the Toyos with the same tire front and back. Do they run the 225/45/13 on all four corners? I dont think its same tire in the race 420s as most have a stagger wheel set up, including my car. The Academy is square wheel set up but I dont know what model Toyos they are running there.
