When your Ariel Atom just doesn't draw enough attention....  

 

I'm curious if the build is documented anywhere?  It may not be to my taste, but it's fascinating as a build project.  I wonder how far gone the original Europa donor was before this began?

I can't say that's the direction I would have gone with a basket case Europa, but speaking as someone who makes stuff I have to respect the vision and skill.  It's easy to start a project, but pretty hard to finish one off.  It's... distinctive... hopefully someone will fall in love with it.

I think I drew the shiny one in middle school. Even if the buyer gets it into their state and lives in a low pop corner, all it takes is a fix-it ticket for something that can't be fixed without spending $$$$ for custom glass or cutting it down to below eye level.

I think the BaT car is brilliant. Steam punk Europa! Anyone wanting to know more should read the thread on BaT. The builder is a famous body man and is only selling because he built some new wild thing.

Well, If you felt compelled to spend $58.5k, you too could have had a shot at bidding on it. The fellow, JK, who built it has done some work for Moal Coachworks in California. I looked up Moal and they reportedly pay their coach builders $229-299/hour. Can you imagine how many hours went into the making of this one-off car??? Yipes! I guess with the lack of garage space and bank account numbers, I am likely NEVER going to be a client of Moal's (sob).

Could be worse, Land Rover Brooklyn (NYC) is now charging $499 per hour for mechanical work on Land Rovers.  :classic_ohmy:

Seriously, this speaks to the shortage of trained mechanics available.  The old process of learning your trade at a dealers then moving up to specialty work is broken as dealer mechanics only know how to plug a computer into a car to have it tell the mechanic to replace Part C12 - its an Ikea repair.

Glad I live in Florida. We just offer the technician a case of of Lite beer rather than a Moal and they are willing to consider working for much less pay per hour.  As we say around here, "Dadgummit, that there is ridicalus Noooo Yorky prices!" 

 

Bob aka boB because my mama was worried I might suffer a brain injury if I was to be so stupid as to pay $500/hour for an oil change and might spell my name backwards. She also gave me a protective helmet that is far better than my Sparco Kevlar race helmet to ward off stupid!

The mech/tech probably gets about 1/10th the shop hourly rate for the flat rate of the task, which is determined by the mfg. Such mechs can make more on the weekend working from home if they don't need the shop equipment. That is one reason shops isolate the customers from the mechs.

 

The highly repetitive work where the mfg has few drivetrain options and is typically more reliable (imports) generally pays the most. Since the mech gets paid by the job, not how long it takes them or how good a job they do. It drives sloppy careless work and outright fraud. Easy six digit pay doing only oil changes in a hurry in a busy area. Not who you want trying to troubleshoot or do much else.

 

Aviation is different, but you still have major airline mechs who are called "flashlight holders" because that is all they can be trusted to do and the org is so big they don't need to be dealt with or mechs who only do work in one area are not exposed to all aspects unless they work the line, handling problems between flights. Generally, the experience general aviation mech is much more qualified all around but it usually doesn't pay as well. There are exceptions to everything. Pay and experience often do not go hand in hand.

 

I rarely have any work done for me, but when I do, I often buy pizzas or provide water and snacks. It can make a big difference in the quality of work.

Any of you smart, experienced and knowledgeable folks have opinions on this birkin for sale?  Good looking car to my newb eyes.  Anything jump out to you folks as far as shortcomings or problems?  Any input greatly appreciated. 

 

Have been in contact with the owner.  Waiting for additional pics and information.  Any questions i should be asking?

Beautiful Seven!  Headlight hoods for protection on trackday.  A great color, and one of the best-detailed engine compartments I have seen.  The seats look comfy, yet admirably light on weight.  The car will provide the tightish fit of a standard S3 cockpit, so if you're big, beware.  I would ask how many of those 9,000 miles were driven on the track - if all or most, there could be problems.  Ask about leaks and examine the floor where the car is parked.  When you drive it, listen for diff or trans whines, and roll the engine at low rpm's to listen for slap.  Take first and second out to full rpm and feel the motor.  Pay attention to how well it pulls from low rpm.  A compression test at a local facility would not cost much, and would tell you a lot - tight across the board at appropriate PSI is a good sign.  Note that Zetecs in light Sevens will still pull hard even if one cylinder is down a fair bit, and low cylinder(s) indicate problems.  Ask if the owner has any recent oil analyses.  Check the master cylinders to see if any are low (some Sevens have slave cylinders inside the bellhousing, and replacement is costly).  If you find demerits, try to recover some or all of the repair expense, although his price seems reasonable for the car as pictured.  Ask about doors and weather gear.  Ask if he has an FIA rollbar for the car (taller and safer).  If so, get that stuff included in the sale.  Don't worry about a few paint chips - without those, the title is a fraud and car is not really a Super Seven.  Here's my last Seven, a Superlight R400 with Duratech and close-ratio 6-speed:

You're welcome, and correct in your observations.  I bought my Superlight from a fellow who treated the car like fine art.  He added every available bit of carbon fiber (nose, fenders, seats, turn signal nacelles, rearview mirrors), the FIA roll bar, engine and exhaust upgrades and more - and then barely drove it!  When I saw what he had accomplished, I advised him to keep the car, drain all the fluids and mount it on his family room wall.  It was the best appointed Seven I have ever encountered, which is how it earned a ribbon at the 2022 Eyes on Design concours.  But the Lola is a bit more of everything - stop, go, turn-in, the sex-on-wheels element - and I couldn't say no to the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Plus, it has a title, so it's plated and I can drive it on the street!  But that is my good fortune, which in no way reduces the joy you will obtain from your cherry red Birkin, should you buy it.  I know we treat Caterhams like the Holy Grail, but Birkins are also legitimate heirs to the authentic Lotus Seven heritage (Birkin and Caterham being the only two who were licensed by Chapman to reproduce Sevens).  They are excellent Sevens, with a wide range of available options.  The Birkin company was named after a relative of one of the founders, Sir Henry Ralph Birkin, who preferred the name Tim.  He was one of the original Bentley Boys, and won many races including Le Mans.  So, a fine history will append to your excellent purchase, should you conclude it.

 

The only demerit I can add is that Birkins do not retain value or appreciate like Caterhams.  I believe marketing and name recognition are the difference.  But that is OK, because by buying used, you save the money up front.  If your Birkin was a Caterham, you would be paying $40,000 or more.  Good for you, because now you can afford as many upgrades as you want!

Owner replied and had a bunch of pages of info from the original owner.  Toyota solid rear end with a 5 link.  Is this typical in a birkin? Was built originally largely for track use.  Had several sets of wheels including 13" with Hoosiers, a kirkey seat and other track oriented decisions made in the build. Tracsport gears in a merkur tranny.  Engine was rebuilt a few years ago prior to current ownership.  Paint is newer.  Has the widetrack front end. Fuel cell was rebuilt at some point. 

 

Any red flags or solid positives in there?

 

Of course the new 15k wcm s2k listed is gone already!  That was quick.
