Cueball1
SuperlightR has low miles. Not the original builder, he doesn't seem to know much. Hard to know from pics but the zetec engine looks very civilized. Unknown spec on the engine. Car is no doubt a good buy and unfortunately likely won't last long enough for me to get serious about it. Had to show up just as I'm trying to finalize a deal on that Birkin. Timing stinks for this popping up! Negatives, unknown build quality and engine spec. Plusses, wouldn't have the seat/roll bar change the birkin may need plus it has a top and doors the birkin lacks. Ugh. Color me confused
Vovchandr
Seems to be the basic 130hp @ crank VCT Zetec. Non stock exhaust helps it breathe a little better. Edited August 13, 2023 by Vovchandr
theDreamer
You go get that Birkin and let me try for this one. Seller sent me his phone number but says not to call until after 2:30. I'll be on the road then and will not be able to call until closer to 5:00. How did you get the photos?
mrmustang
Haven't we discussed the green S1 in DC before. Pictures look awful familiar, no longer covered in dust. https://www.hemmings.com/listing/1969-superformance-s1-roadster-638198 Bill S.

Yes we have. I think it took a 1-2 month sale break. Debated putting it back in repeats but decided it had long enough time away to justify new.

Don't know if you got it or somebody else but it didn't take long to be gone Gentleman said at one point he had 12 people in the driveway and 2 people in the garage haggling over it. People found his residence without him listing any details and showed up 270 emails over it in less than 24 hours Crazy Hopefully a member bought it and maybe see it in NJMP? It's a mass resident. I'm personally curious what the vin on it is and what the SLR plaque looks like. Edited August 13, 2023 by Vovchandr
theDreamer
Well now I know why he didn't return my calls or PM's. Geezzz, I had found his home address and home phone number but was being typically the polite Canadian. So how did you find out it sold?

I was casually curious as I knew it was under valued but theres no chance I could be there today with cash and trailer to pick it up which is typically how these things go. He said he can interest all the way from Mexico, to Canada to England.
Kitcat
With the presumably stock Zetec engine (making maybe 115-120hp at the rear wheels) the 168 rear wheel hp powered Birkin is the superior car(IMHO). I would love this Superlight with the Birkin’s Zetec! Given how well sorted the Birkin is, that makes it even more attractive. It doesn’t have the cachet of a “Caterham Superlight R”, but is the better se7en(Again IMHO). Edited August 13, 2023 by Kitcat

Birkin Is a bargain considering the engine I wanted to see the VIN as it doesn't have typical US SLR engine ITB package or wheels, but we know US SLRs can be spec'ed wildly compared to UK. It does have the plaque and the CF nosecones which are tell tale signs of an SLR package. That car is a good deal but will be a fair amount of work to be reliable. New owner only put a few hundred miles on it and I can't be certain they were trouble free. Car sat for a long time with little use and from personal experience there will be a number of gaskets, hoses and other rubber components In need of maintenance. It piqued my curiosity due to how close it was to my location. Edited August 13, 2023 by Vovchandr
theDreamer
Well, I was the guy from Canada (or at least one of, if there were more). As soon as I read that ad I knew it was meant to be my car. It's like what I would have ordered if I had the money back in the day. Not the fastest, biggest HP tire shredding beast some people lust after. Just a nice mix of go, turn, stop in a stripped down package. Plus, the seller lived just 30 minutes from Marblehead MA. where DSK Cars was located. To me, that’s the spiritual home of Sevens in North America. I hope whoever got it paid through the nose. I wish them many miles of problems and frustration. (Oh wait, that’s most seven owners. Never mind.) I really hope that it doesn’t show up on BaT in a couple of weeks with fresh tires and quickie detail job. Now that would really frost my cookies! Oh well the search continues for the rest of us. Let's be frank. Only locals with cash in hand had a chance on something like that. Not sure what the odds are of it being on BaT for a flip or whether the new owner will make themselves known here.
thewebgal
Is there some kind of issue (copyright or otherwise) with the Superformance S1 Super7 car? Not trying to insult anyone, but it looks like they made them for a few years but then went to Cobra replicas and similar vehicles - (perhaps a bit more upscale?) I've done some searches but can't find much about them like I can about the Rotus and other 7 designs ...

Not trying to insult anyone, but it looks like they made them for a few years but then went to Cobra replicas and similar vehicles No issues. Superformance was making their highly regarded Cobra replica for many years before introducing the S1. It is more civilized than most other se7ens, with luxuries like opening windows, and a real windshield. Depending on your perspective, that can be either a good thing or a bad thing. However, I've yet to hear an S1 owner say anything negative about their car. 1
MV8
A replacement windshield can be an issue if it is needed.

I've done some searches but can't find much about them like I can about the Rotus and other 7 designs ... The biggest issue with the Superformance Seven is weight, but this is always a by-product of adding luxury. The front window frame is more substantial, which may provide a bit more ROP. The interior is fully appointed. There is roll-up side glass. Plus, the Zetec engine is about 44 pounds heavier than the Duratech. Otherwise, I have seen them at the track running solid and consistent laps. Also, their resale values remain consistent, though less than a well-specified Caterham, and a bit less than a well-specced Birkin. Superformance Seven values run about equal to the average WCM S2K. I think the car did not sell as anticipated because the Seven ethic is Spartan, and the Superformance version is a bit more Dionysian. Most folks buying a Seven don't have need or desire for side windows and such, and the extra weight is a performance demerit.

The Superformance S1 are very good cars on track. They also have the ability to take a proper roll bar via pre-existing mounting holes - @S1Steve has the details
